"Isran, Carcette is dead. The Hall of Vigilants ... everyone ... they're all dead. You were right, we were wrong. Isn't that enough for you? I know what you think of us. You think we're soft, that we're cowards. You think our deaths proved our weakness. Stendarr grant that you do not have to face the same test and be found wanting."
Kinda in love with my Tolan. Her name is Squee and she understands me better than I do. đ„ș
This is part of my Tolan series, in which Garak and Julian adopt a child while on Cardassia and have to face some of the challenges of new parenthood. The link to the first work in the series is here, the second part is here, and this is the third piece.
Thank you to @lorenzobane for both writing this post on how Julianâs relationship with his parents isnât really as black and white as we tend to think in the fandom and for beta-reading this for me.

âYou really went with âTolanâ?â Amsha said skeptically. Somehow the judgement managed to make its way through lightyears of space and a computer screen.
âHis middle name is âAugustus,ââ Julian added lamely. He took a deep breath and tried to ignore his motherâs deepening scowl. âLook, mum, itâs really important to Elim that our son be named after his uncle,â he said. âItâs a whole Cardassian... thing.â
âWell, Iâm calling him âGus,ââ Amsha said.
âFine, but heâll just think itâs a nickname nana calls him,â Julian said.
âYou arenât even going to tell your son his human name?â she protested.
âNo, I... I will, but itâll be--â
âBecause he needs to know his human name too. No grandson of mine is going to be--â
âMum, heâs Cardassian. It only makes sense for him to go by a Cardassian name!â
âAnd thatâs another thing!â she said. âWhatâs wrong with adopting a child from Earth? Youâre adopting them anyway.â
âMum,â Julian growled warningly. âThere are a lot of orphans on Cardassia right now. Itâd be irresponsible bordering on cruel to pass over a Cardassian for a human simply because Iâm human.â
âFine, but the next one should be--â
âJulian,â Garak said from the doorway. âI have to--â He caught sight of the video call. âOh! Good day, Mrs. Bashir.â
âHello, Elim!â Amsha said with a slight wave. âI told you that you could stop calling me âMrs. Bashirâ when I came to your wedding ceremony.â
âApologies, Amsha,â Garak said. âUsing a familiar name for oneâs mother-in-law is unusual on Cardassia.â
âYes, weâre all going to have to get used to a lot of things,â Amsha said.
Julian clenched and unclenched his jaw. âSomething you need, darling?â he asked Garak.
âI have to leave for a press conference. Could you look after Tolan?â
âOh, yes, of course,â Julian said. Garak wheeled in the stroller with their son in it. âWe had been taking a walk,â Garak said by way of explanation.
âIs that my grandson?â Amsha asked, trying to look up and over Julian like she could bend the forces of video transmission to get a good look at the baby.
âIndeed it is, M-- Amsha,â Garak said, catching himself at the last moment.
âWell, donât be stingy! Hold him up to the camera!â
Julian sighed and carefully undid the straps keeping Tolan in the stroller. He had been dreading this moment -- the moment when his mother realized just how Cardassian their son was. He lifted Tolan out of the stroller, being careful to cradle his head. Tolanâs scaled nose twitched a little and he sneezed.
âThis is Tolan?â Amsha asked as Julian cradled his son.
âYes,â Julian said, not daring to look at the video feed.
There was a pause during which Julian wondered if he should just turn off the video feed and deal with the consequences later. He ran a finger over Tolanâs nose.Â
âHe has your eyes,â Amsha said. Julian looked at the computer screen and was surprised to see his mother in tears. She wiped them away with the back of her hand and smiled at him. âNot sure how thatâs possible with an adoption, but he does. Could you hold him a little closer?â
Julian held Tolan a little closer to the camera.
âLook at his little nose!â Amsha said. âYou know, your nose was just like that when you were a baby. Flat as a PADD. Your father said it was because I booped your nose too much.â
âThat might be true,â Julian teased as he ran a finger over Tolanâs nose again. âIt does seem to be one of his favorite soothing gestures.â
âHis favorite or your favorite?â she said with a knowing look.
âPoint taken,â Julian said.
Tolan began to squirm and cry.
âOh, shh, Tolly,â Julian said, holding Tolan close to his chest again. âItâs alright. Daddyâs got you.â
âTolly?â Amsha asked.
âItâs what I call him. He doesnât seem like much of a âTolanâ right now,â Julian said.  Â
âTolly,â Amsha repeated as if feeling out the word on her tongue. She nodded. âIâll pretend itâs short for âBartholemew.ââ
âTolly is short for Bartholemew?â Julian said skeptically.
âBar-tol-eh-mew,â she said, emphasizing the middle syllables, âTolly!â
âWhatever makes you happy,â Julian said with a weary smile. âBut if you start calling him âBartâ--â
âOh! Never! Such an awful name. âBart,ââ she said, wrinkling her nose as she said it. âIt sounds like someone burping. Bart.â
âThat is pretty bad,â Julian said.
âSo, when are we going to see Tolly?â
âMum, I told you. Making a trip to Earth isnât going to happen right now. Elimâs very busy with the senate and Iâm--â
âIâm going to see my grandson in person,â Amsha said. âThis is not up for debate.â
âWell, Iâm sorry, but in order to make that happen, youâd have to come here,â Julian said. Immediately, he realized his mistake as a grin spread across his motherâs face.
âI thought youâd never ask!â she exclaimed. âWeâve been wanting to see this new home of yours. I have a break in September and I should be able to convince your father to put a hold on his newest project to come see his grandson. Would the twenty fifth work?â
âIâll... Iâll ask Elim,â he said. âHis schedule is a bit more rigid than mine.â
âRemind him that we are the boyâs grandparents and that we deserve to see our grandson,â she said with a disapproving look. âI know heâs Cardassian, but he has to understand that.â
Julian contemplated telling her that Cardassians valued family more than most humans did, then decided he didnât want to add more weapons to her arsenal. âIâll talk to him,â he said. âWe might have to move it to October?â
âFine, September or October. Figure it out soon though so I can book the tickets. I donât want to pay higher shuttle fare just because you couldnât talk to your husband.â
Julian took a deep breath. âYes, mum.â
âThis is so exciting!â Amsha said. She gave Julian a fond look. âYouâre going to make a fine father, Jules,â she said.
âThank you,â Julian said, forcing the words out around the tears in his throat.
âWell, you talk to your husband and Iâll talk to mine,â she said. âLove you! See you soon!â
The video feed cut out before Julian could get another word in.
âI suppose I should clear my schedule for the twenty fifth?â Garak said as he reappeared in the doorway.
âI thought you were going to a press conference,â Julian said, swiveling in his chair to face his husband.
âOh, I am,â Garak said, âbut I happened to overhear a bit of your conversation while I was changing jackets.â
âIâm sure,â Julian said with a little smirk. He held Tolan tighter. âThat was the easy bit,â he said softly. âFather is... Well...â
âYes, he made his opinions on Cardassia quite clear at our wedding,â Garak said dryly.
âAnd Iâm not sure what heâs going to think about a grandson that isnât related to him,â Julian said. âNot that I really share any DNA with my father after all the enhancements, but--â
âMy dear doctor,â Garak interrupted, âIâm sure your father will love this child just as much as we do.â
âAnd if he doesnât?â
âI believe your mother can more than make up for the deficit,â Garak said.
Julian smiled softly and rocked the sleeping Tolan in his arms. âYouâre ok with this then?â he asked. âMy parents coming to visit.â
Garak cast Julian an exasperated look. âMy dear, you really must set aside these Federation notions of devotion to oneâs partner over devotion to oneâs family,â he said. âEven if I were upset by the idea of your parents coming to Cardassia, it would be positively horrendous of me to prevent them from doing so.â
âBut are you upset by it?â Julian asked.
Garak walked over to Julian and placed a kiss on his forehead. âIâll be a little annoyed if we donât manage to clean the house by the time they arrive,â he said as he ran his thumb along Julianâs jaw. âAnd I would appreciate you updating your parents on Cardassiaâs current lack of amenities while weâre rebuilding.â
âClean the house and tell Mum about the power outages,â Julian said. âGot it.â
Garak heaved a bemused sigh. âEver the soul of candor,â he said.
âOne of us has to be,â Julian said.
Garak chuckled. âI suppose thatâs true,â he said. He gave Tolan a little caress along the top of his head. âAnd, in the spirit of candor, I have to say that I agree with your mother.â
âWell, youâre too late because weâve already named him âTolan.ââ Julian said, looking down at their son. âSigned the papers and everything.â
Garak heaved another sigh. âI mean about you making a fine father,â he said.
Julian looked up at Garak again. âThank you,â he whispered.
âYouâre quite welcome,â Garak said. He was about to head for the door when something occurred to Julian.
âWait, how much of that was a lie?â Julian asked.
âA lie? From a politician?â Garak teased. âYou insult me, doctor.â
âGarak,â Julian growled warningly.
âI meant every word,â Garak assured him. âEspecially the ones about cleaning the house.â Â

A/N: âTollyâ actually is an archaic nickname for âBartholemewâ that was sometimes used in England.  Â
So, a couple requests/questions: D'ya mind showing us what you think humanized Zadkiel, Lailah, Jophiel, and Jehudiel would look like? We haven't seen 'em yet! Second, what exactly is the relationship between Demon!Michael and your OC Tolan? It seems a bit like a yandere relationship from the looks of it to me.
Y bueno la otra pregunta bueno... La relaciĂłn entre ellos es romĂĄntica aunque claro su relaciĂłn es como.....
and well the other question well..... the relationship they have between them is romĂĄntic although of course their relationship is like....
Michael: You are only for me tolan

All TogetherÂ
I wanted to do a big piece of all the Oniverse characters together because I love them all so much! There are definitely some characters I wish I could have included, but I wanted to narrow it down as much as I could so I could complete it. They are like one big extended/found family and it makes me so happy. Â
Thanks for all the love and support for these stories, you guys are awesome!!
Having more GHOSTBUSTERS WAS a good idea!
