the whole mega evolution 4 part special xy had is really underrated and not talked about enough as it should be. It provides backstory to how alain and mairin first met, what really happened to her Chespin, and it even had the primal Groudon vs primal Kyogre + Mega Rayquaza fight which was really cool to see!!
this is probably one of my favorite scenes to come out of it though. It’s so cute to see how much Alain went absolutely crazy that Mairin was going through so much pain. You can really see how much he cares for her and it’s just GUAGGHH MY HEART 💔💔 TO ME: they’re so sibling coded i love them so much <333 just a big brother wanting to protect his little sister !!
Hi, what do you mean Alain is canon to the games?
TSME TURNS 12 YEARS OLD TODAY they're still together out there, having adventures <3
Ala(i)n's Canonical Personality Traits
In no particular order and with cited examples:
Imo, there's one aspect of Lysandre that makes him more unsettling than Ghetsis, and it's that while Ghetsis isn't really capable of caring about anyone else other than himself, Lysandre is, and it still doesn't stop him from including those he cares about in his purge.
Sycamore. (Aside from the initial attempt with the Ultimate Weapon and Sycamore not being among those he intended to spare, he did try to suicide bomb Pasio when he started losing his argument with Sycamore, and then when that fails, Lys gives an implied death threat to Sycamore if he strays from that righteous path.)
His own Pokemon that he's pretty much explicitly said to have a genuine bond with.
Perhaps even the XY player to some degree since a lot of his dialogue reads like he's trying to get us on his side.
Alain (while his interactions with the kid were largely manipulative, I do think he was legitimately appreciative of the help Alain gave him and originally intended for him to survive if he could sway the boy to his side, he even has a grunt seek Mairin out. There's her being a useful tool to ensure Alain doesn't act against him ofc, but I think he still saw her as someone who made Alain happy.)
Malva. (More in the anime, they had kinda a flirty vibe in the few interactions they had. He's also noticeably stunned when she intervenes to save Alain and Ash from him.)
(One of the reasons why I wish L got more in ZA, or hope he at least comes to Masters--since even if he does show up in HZ, I doubt we'd get more of a callback--, like imagine the guilt if he remembered that.)
Alain is an interesting character, but also underutilized.
And no, I'm not referring to his battles. He deservedly won the Kalos League.
I'm referring to his development and his potential to shape other characters.
It all starts with Alain himself, and honestly, I think it was a bad decision that the episodes focused on him, where we learn more about his relationship with Team Flare, Chespin, Mairin, and Champion Steve, were special episodes/OVAs instead of being part of the anime. This means that Alain misses out on a large part of his development if you don't watch these specials.
This makes everything a surprise at the climax of the story, but it also leaves several questions unanswered.
The second problem is the lack of consequences for his actions. Yes, he was manipulated, but that doesn't change the fact that his key participation was crucial for Lysandre to obtain the Legendary Pokémon and Zygarde. Besides injuring and damaging a large part of Kalos, I'm not saying he killed anyone, because Pokémon is still a children's anime.
And what were the consequences? That he willingly, without anyone being able to give them to him, handed over his Mega Ring and his Charizardite X, nothing more. And I apologize if I'm being too harsh on Alain, but I don't think everyone is happy that the boy who helped Lysandre only handed over two stones and nothing else.
Furthermore, it helped develop many characters and offered an example/lesson of what to do when someone you trust does something terrible to you, but you were manipulated into doing it.
And although it's a complex topic, Pokémon has already tackled complex issues and handled them excellently. A clear example is the abuse Chimchar suffered, how it affected him, and how he overcame it.
But then there's Alain, who, if you take away his talent as a trainer, is essentially an empty character. To learn more about his motivations and why he's friends with certain characters (Mairin and Steve; you won't know anything about the latter if you haven't seen the OVAs), you have to watch special episodes outside the main anime.
There are no real consequences for his actions, neither as a trainer nor in his friendships, and now he only serves to fill the roles of strong but irrelevant characters. However, he is appreciated for his design and… his personality, which is practically nonexistent.
Ah, Alain, if Pokémon XYZ hadn't tried to be just another shonen anime and had simply been Pokémon, maybe you would have been given more weight.
Anyway, remember to get a good night's sleep.
And, as an annoying reminder, Ash-Greninja isn't canon.
