Well into the night, Hiccup still lies awake in bed. He’s on his back underneath layers of blankets and furs and he spends these hours staring up at the ceiling. There’s very little else he can do, very little else he has the energy to do. Their bedroom is freezing despite the fire they kept burning in the firepit to keep their house warm. He’s sweating plenty underneath the many layers and yet he’s apparently not warm enough. Why else would old injuries be acting up?
His stump and the burns he suffered all from a battle many years ago haunt him every single winter and with devastating winter around the corner, his nights are only going to get worse. Then there is the fact that this season is a little more different than most as this year he’s pregnant with his and his wife’s first.
He’s a well over halfway, though the layers on him makes him seem even bigger than he actually is. Astrid is asleep, Toothless and the Light Fury are asleep. He lets his hand glide over his bump on top of the furs, even the baby is asleep. They’ve started moving and then kicking, but he has learned by now that the lack of movement doesn’t mean that something is wrong. It simply means that they’re asleep.
It’ll still be winter when they come, his stump and burn scars will still be plaguing him when the day comes that he’ll have to push a new human being into the world and it’s not for the first time that he realizes just how reckless this pregnancy is.
He doesn’t blame Astrid for his situation, his sleepless nights. He was just as thoughtless when he let her between his legs and eagerly accepted everything she had to offer him. They’re married, they want to love each other completely. Besides, he’s the one with the broken body, he should’ve thought of the implications. Those are certainly the thoughts going through his head. Nowadays, he can’t get around without the use of a cane, a tool usually reserved for his worser days.
With the amount of scarring on his lower body, he even needed Gothi to take a look at him to make sure whether he could even give birth to begin with. Right now, however, his biggest concerns are his sleepless nights.
Hiccup rolls onto his right side with some difficulty and tries to find a position that’s comfortable. Curled up or one leg out, arms underneath his pillow to thicken it up or not. He tries on his left side when the other one doesn’t work out and does his best to keep his grunts of pain to himself. He simply can’t find comfort and the twinges in his scarred muscles and joints don’t help matters much.
It’s maddening, enough to drive him up the walls. It’s frustrating.
Despite his best efforts, Astrid turns around to face him. In the darkness, their eyes meet.
“Hey,” she starts quietly. “Can’t sleep?”
Hiccup shakes his head. At least he can still move something without pain. Until morning comes and a migraine will have inevitably taken up residence inside his brain.
“I’m so tired,” he admits and he wishes that it was enough. That being tired and closing his eyes was all that it took for him to fall asleep, but it isn’t.
Astrid reaches over and cups his cheek. “Just close your eyes, try to get as much rest as you can even if you can’t fall asleep. And when morning comes, I’ll be taking over as chief. You curl up to Toothless, okay?”
Hiccup is tired enough and in enough pain that he agrees. Not that Berk expects him out much in his condition. He nods and Astrid scoots closer. She wraps her arms around him to hold him to her and he wraps one around her. Her chin touches his crown and his forehead her chest, he closes his eyes. She goes back to sleep and he does his best to.
Summary: Set after THW, the dragons never left. Hiccup was 18 when his and Astrid's recklessness led to a baby. He was 19 when he had that baby and it was stolen from him by Viggo. 15 years later, a young boy has a dragon friend who really, really wants him to meet his dad's Rider.

Author’s Notes: This fic actually came to me in a dream. Except the dream was way, WAY different and I'm still planning on writing it when given the opportunity to.
I'm on chapter 7 as of posting this and only about halfway through this fic, so no final number of chapters in sight yet.
Do I tag this as a "dead dove"? I mean, it deals with child kidnapping!
Enjoy!

Sitting on the edge of his bed, Astrid watches her boyfriend pace from one end of the loft to the other. Toothless isn't here with them and can’t be of any help. After practically pulling her out of her bed, he decided to stay outside and give them some space. He already knew before her what has Hiccup so anxious.
He's fast in his pacing, arms crossed, quick to turn and who knows if he’s even looking where he’s going. It makes Astrid nervous he's going to take a wrong step and fall right off the edge of the loft. And she wouldn't want that happening even under normal circumstances.
She was just made aware that this is anything but normal.
"Hiccup, can you please stop pacing, you're driving me crazy!" She finally snaps when he turns away from the ledge again. After causing her a slight heart attack with his fast turn, he's now facing her.
"I'm driving you crazy? You're driving me crazy by not being crazy!" Hiccup fires back, the panic clear in his voice. He's usually so good at keeping a level head, sometimes to an unnatural degree. Not that any of them can complain, they rely on his level head and his quick thinking in battle. They’ve been a lifesaver on more than one occasion.
To see him panic so much, it breaks Astrid's heart and almost appears to chase hers away.
"I'm not crazy because I know we'll figure this out," she tells him, getting up from the bed to grab his hands before he has the idea to go back to pacing. He squeezes back like his life depends on it.
"How?! I'm pregnant, Astrid! There's a whole baby growing inside of me and there is so much to think about!" He raises his voice. "I mean… Wha- whatt if I tell my dad and… and ah, he- he tells me to get rid of it because we- we're not married or- or- or something?"
Stoick knows his son is out of the ordinary and he has learned to accept that even when he doesn't understand, like when his "daughter" suddenly came to him stating he was a son instead. But he has to have a limit somewhere and that limit might be a baby out of wedlock between his son who wasn't a daughter and his son's girlfriend who isn't a boyfriend.
Gods, why weren't they more careful? Why didn't they just wait until they were at least betrothed? When news reached Berk that Astrid and Hiccup were courting, the entire village was pretty much already talking about a wedding. They should’ve just waited with sleeping together until their future together was set in stone, no one would bat an eye at a baby snuck into wedlock than. It happens more often than people would like to admit!
Ripping his hands free when the pressure inside his chest becomes to much, Hiccup paces until a wall keeps him from moving forwards. He feels restless, he feels like he's ready to explode, his lungs yearn for air where there is none.
"I- I- I want this baby, Astrid," he says and turns back to face her.
"I- I know I only found out about them today," he's been having dreams and nightmares about being pregnant, like his body was trying to tell him all along that his moon's blood is very late and it wasn't just a fluke because it's irregular anyway.
"But I already want them so much. I can't bear the thought of anyone telling me to get rid of it," he admits, placing a hand low on his stomach.
Astrid puts her hand on her chest. "… Really? You want them?"
"… Yes," he answers carefully. "Don't tell me you want me to-"
Astrid is quick to approach, cutting him off and grabbing his hands again. This time, he doesn't squeeze back.
"No! No, I'm just… To hear you say out loud that you want this baby. Our baby! It just makes me happy," she tells him with a shrug and places his hand, now both their hands, back on his belly again. He’s not wearing his armor and she swears there could already be a slight rise, no wonder his body had to tell him in his sleep.
Tears growing and smiling through them, Hiccup sags and rests his head on his girlfriend's shoulder. Astrid wraps her arms around her boyfriend and holds him close, rocking him back and forth.
"We're in this together, Hiccup. We'll figure it out," she promises softly and Hiccup returns the hug. He releases a shaky breath and some of his stress leaves with it. He squeezes her tight, relieved that he'll have her with him no matter what.
Until it comes back the moment a man scarier than his father comes to his mind.
"What about Viggo?" He asks her and she stills for a moment. They're in the middle of a war with the Dragon Hunters, another reason why they should've just waited.
"We'll figure him out, too," she assures him and goes back to rubbing his back.

“Hiccup must be pregnant.”
Upon hearing this outrageous claim, Helga, the baker’s youngest daughter, can’t help but stare at her neighbor in utter shock. The woman standing next to her is much older than her and known to be one of the village gossips. She never has much good to say about anyone and she simply thrives ond rama, but this time she might be going just a little too far.
Chief Hiccup? Pregnant? Where did she get that idea from?
Still, Helga tries to look beyond the crowd at the happy couple as they stand all the way in the front on a dais. All smiles from ear to ear, staring at each other like the rest of the world has ceased to exist, dressed in beautiful wedding garments they made and crowns of flowers that they weaved for each other, their dragons at their sides. Helga tries to pay special attention to Hiccup, Gothi’s translated words are going unheard by her, still the village’s resident multitasker even now that more Berkians live every year since the end of the Dragon Scourge six years ago. Helga can’t see what the old gossip is apparently seeing.
“I mean,” despite Helga’s lack of a response, she continues to talk. “They were betrothed for years and now they’ve decided to tie the knot? In the middle of winter?”
Helga shoots her an uncertain look from the corners of her eyes, too timid to reply and tell her she’s wrong. Besides, everybody knows that the chief doesn’t do well in devastating winter and that is only a few weeks away. When else is he going to hold his wedding and marry his love? Other than in the warmer seasons.
“Don’t believe me? Look at his belly!” Although she thinks her neighbor’s claims are wild and outrageous, she still takes a look and squints.
But no, she can’t say he looks particularly pregnant to her as he stands there, trying not to laugh at whatever unspoken inside joke he and his wife-to-be are sharing in the moment.

Hours after their wedding, after the feast that happened until well past midnight, in the wee hours of the morning, Hiccup and Astrid lie in bed together. They have not a layer of clothing on their person and even their crowns are somewhere in the room. Their covers are just as much a mess.
Both sweaty, panting and so completely satisfied, Astrid still lies with her head on his chest and his arm around her. Her lips are curled up into a soft smile as she gazes at something that brings her great joy.
“Do you think anyone noticed?” Hiccup breaks the cozy silence to ask his newly wedded and bedded wife when the repetitive movements of her hand brings attention to their current situation.
“Oh you mean this cute thing?” She asks, brushing circles on his bump. He’s about four months pregnant and he started showing a while ago. If they waited any longer, they would’ve wed with his very obvious baby bump on full display.
It’s her baby and he carries them so well. Watching his belly grow has been such a joy. Apparently, he can feel some fluttering already and she wishes she could feel them, too. She can hardly wait for that day to come.
“Astrid.” Hiccup’s tone is one of playful warning.
“No, I don’t think anyone noticed,” Astrid assures him, looking up at him with her chin on his chest, though her hand doesn’t stop its repeated circles on his bump.
Not that it will matter much whether they noticed or not. Any day now his clothing won’t be able to hide his pregnancy anymore and when their day of birth inevitably comes, people will count backwards and figure out his heir was conceived out of wedlock. But by then it’s already too late to complain. Hiccup and Astrid are married and their child will be born inside their marriage and they will not be considered a bastard, their right to his throne will go undisputed.
But that isn’t his concern right now. His biggest concern is whether or not someone noticed today. And maybe they did, maybe they didn’t, but that is for later. Right now, they should savor this step into a new chapter in their lives.
Astrid lays her head back down on her husband’s chest again and looks at his baby bump with a smile.
