the thing about many comics is that they will list female characters at the VERY edge of underweight for their height (or just straight up underweight) and then list male characters at the edge or well into overweight for their height and blame both on “muscle.”

Dick Grayson at 5 ft 10 and 175 lbs (general canon average) is overweight by BMI. Cassandra Cain at 5’5 and 110 lbs is underweight by BMI. and I’ve seen female characters as tall as 5’9 getting down to 110-115 lbs in canon estimates.

carrying extra muscle rarely means carrying less weight overall. Dick Grayson might be a BMI outlier for having more muscle than the average human (making his slightly overweight BMI arguably healthy) but being underweight and carrying a higher proportion of muscle than the average human rarely benefits women.

time to get real, DC. I want my 5’5+ women ripped and somewhere between 130-150. If they’re carrying more muscle, it just makes sense. if it’s for “agility” then why is Dick Grayson allowed to be overweight by BMI?

Something a little frustrating to me as a feedist is how height impacts relative weight so much- like, a 250 pound person who’s 4’11 is way way fatter than someone 6’4 of the same height, which can make it harder to visualize. But then it got me thinking of a tantalizing scenario of someone being given some kind of magic pill that shrinks them down from 6’4 to 4’11 while staying the same weight, meaning those modest gains and a just-barely-obese BMI of 30.4 becomes an obscenely fat 50.5 in a matter of moments. Like would you even be able to stand after that kind of immediate gain? Without really gaining, either, I mean you’re the same weight still… just shorter, and much, much fatter.

If you ever need a reminder that BMI is bullshit other then the fact that it has been proven so, when I was younger I was around 165cm tall and 83kg in weight. My BMI was considered obese at (30.5).

You could count my ribs.

Shouldn’t have been too worried about the last weigh-in because I’m officially at a normal weight! (For the average BMI scale, I’m still a little overweight for an Asian).

I know the BMI is flawed and I’m not particularly healthier now than I was at a slightly higher weight but I am proud of myself for reaching a goal I had set for myself.

On a separate note I had been thinking about how I can’t call myself fat anymore. Well, depending on how it’s defined I couldn’t really do that for a while now (I had stopped needing plus-sizes) if not ever (does anyone remember the ‘fategories’? I think I was only ever a ‘small fat’). Not that any of this matters but it just feels weird, I don’t think I’ve ever been in the normal range since I was a toddler.

I am literally only 0.1 kg/m^2 under so perhaps this post is a little early lol
