After closing time. That was the best time to get to the back of the residence and get in without being seen. Jimin had done it before, had told Namjoon he loved going back there because the wild ones were so much nicer than the humans Jimin knew. Judging from his father, Namjoon believed him.
They had dinner in the zoo's restaurant and, as the zoo closed, stayed behind. Since Jimin was the son of the owner and stayed behind all the time, that didn't raise eyebrows. After a short while, as the lights went off and everyone who wasn't security left the building, Namjoon and Jimin started making their way to the wild ones residence.
“I… I'm really not supposed to do this you know? If my father finds out he'll be furious…” Jimin had started to get nervous a little while back, clearly hesitant on whether this was a good idea or not. Jimin didn't look around as he said that, kept walking in a pretty fast pace, his head facing down.
“If you don't tell him, I won't either.” Namjoon had his own reasons for not wanting Jimin to tell his father Namjoon had asked him to show him the wild ones, considering he had threatened to step to Namjoon's father if Namjoon would even do as much as breathe into the direction of the wild ones. And if Namjoon’s father would find out about what he was doing he would kill his son, or worse. Namjoon shivered only by the thought of it.
“But still, this is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Why would you, out of all people, want to go here? It's simply insane I… What if the guards see us?” Jimin gasped at the last bit “What would we tell them? Isn't it kind of really weird that the son of the owner of the zoo and the son of the ruler on Estellia are trying to get into the wild one holding? How could we ever explain that?”
Namjoon frowned, not too sure what to say “... We could just tell them you're giving me a V.I.P. tour through the zoo. And even if they wouldn't believe that, it's our word against theirs.” he took Jimin by his upper arm and made him stop and turn around. Jimin's blue, glowing eyes looked scared and confused. Namjoon wasn't too sure why Jimin would feel this way it's not like Namjoon was going to do something bad or illegal. …Yet.
“Look, Jimin. If you don't want to show me it's fine…”
“No, no! I want to show you, I really do… I'm just, you see, you are the only friend I've ever had besides…” Jimin looked down at his hands.
Besides the wild one girl, Namjoon knew, but he wouldn't say that. Jimin didn't know Namjoon knew about that and, unless he would tell Namjoon about that himself, Jimin didn't have to know that he knew exactly what he meant.
Namjoon was honored that Jimin thought of him as a friend, surprised, but honored. He felt kind of bad for basically taking advantage of that fact.
“Anyway,” Jimin shook his head and looked at Namjoon again, eyes determined “I want to show you.” he turned and walked again, only stopping as he stood in front of the wild ones residence. It was empty, no wild one to be seen, and dark. The only thing lighting the room being the green arrow that pointed the way you had to go in case of emergency. The light gave Jimin's bright pink hair a green glow, causing a fun contrast. It had something magical, he looked like a fairy.
Jimin walked to the white wall beside the glass of the holding, and pressed against it. Namjoon heard a soft click, it echoed because of how silent the zoo was after hours, bouncing off the walls. He wondered if anyone else had heard it, wouldn't be surprised if anyone had. A door opened at the place where Jimin had pushed, as white as the walls, with round edges.
Jimin turned his face to Namjoon again, the grin on his face reminded Namjoon of that of a toddler that stole a candy from their mom's bag. Except that this was a lot more illegal.
They both stepped through the door, which lead to a small hallway. Namjoon followed Jimin through the dark hall that ended in an old, iron door. One that would have fit perfectly in a jail back in era 1. Jimin took a key from his pocket and unlocked the door with a loud click, before slowly pushing the squeaky door open.
Namjoon looked around the room they were standing in. There was a big landing platform for airships and two big doors in the wall that could open so the airships could come through. To the side, practically against the wall, were cabinets. Filled with bags of food, first aid kits and other stuff needed to look after the wild ones. Namjoon's mouth hung slightly open as his wide eyes scanned the room, he never expected a room like this to be behind the residence.
Jimin noticed his amazement and smiled “Wild ones require a lot. Not every zoo can afford to have them because they are so much work and take so much space, it's very tricky to get qualified; they're a lot more work than any other creature in the zoo, and they have a lot more needs. The other residences don't have a room like this.”
Namjoon nodded to show he understood “Where are the wild ones?” It's cool they had all this for them, but this is not what Namjoon came for.
Jimin turned on his heel and walked to another door, this one clearly fabricated in this era. Way better secured and almost impossible to hack “Here,” Jimin pressed on the wall, a small door, that you couldn't see before he opened it because it seemed part of the wall, opened, revealing a small panel made of light. Namjoon knew it was rude of him, but he watched as Jimin typed in the password, only looking away when Jimin turned his head back to him.
The next room wasn't very big, very long, but definitely not big. One wall was completely made of glass, that looked right into the wild ones residence. It was dark, the only light that shone was a little red dot coming from a door in the glass. Jimin clicked on a button, it made no sound at all, not even in the complete silence the room bathed in, but a soft, blue light turned on before the glass wall. Namjoon almost couldn't believe what appeared behind it.
About thirty, possibly more, wild ones layed there, stacked up together, sleeping peacefully. They were laying on the cold, hard ground. Some sharing blankets, some completely without one. Not that those blankets could give much warmth, they were small and thin, almost as if they were made out of paper. Namjoon would never admit it out loud, but his eyes almost immediately scanned the room for you. He hated how every single one of them was treated like this, weren't even given proper blankets, and yet the first thing he could worry about was you.
He found you at the very edge of the packed together group. You were laying beside the male with the boxy smile, you shared a blanket with him. Well, he had taken about two thirds of the blanket for himself. Your legs were entangled with each other's, and your faces were merely inches away from one another's. And Namjoon was… jealous? He shook his head to get that off his mind. You were an animal, not something to get jealous of. For some reason that excuse couldn't fool him any longer though, he simply didn't believe it anymore.
His eyes locked themselves on you again, every feature on your face, every curve of your body, in his eyes you were perfect. Something inside of his chest burned.
He had to get you out of here.
“I know… it sound kind of weird but, for some reason, I really like coming here.” Jimin's voice was merely a whisper, as if he was hesitant to admit it. Namjoon turned his head to him, he was looking at the wild ones, wonder in his eyes.
“It's just… they have nothing, not even a good blanket or proper clothes, yet they still manage to be so happy. Even sleeping, their faces look content with everything. They're so happy with even the littlest of things… I don't know, it's just that, whenever I come here I realise how lucky I am to grow up as privileged as I did. It reminds me that, even if I have a hard time sometimes, I should be happy with every good thing I have.” he suddenly seemed to snap out of some kind of trans, his eyes switched to Namjoon and his sad face smiled awkwardly “Sorry. I didn't mean to monologue.”
Namjoon smiled at him “That's alright.”
The phone rang in Namjoon's ear three times before someone picked up “Kim Seokjin.” The person on the other side of the line answered “How can I help you?”
Kim Seokjin was a name Namjoon recognized from something, probably that time he went to earth “Hello Seokjin, this is Kim Namjoon of the Estellia constellation.”
The man on the other side of the line gasped slightly “To what do I owe the honor of your call mister Kim?”
“I was wondering if I could speak to YG?”
The other side stayed silent for a while, which did not surprise Namjoon. Either Seokjin was looking through YG's agenda to see if he had some free time to talk to Namjoon, or he was kind of shocked that Namjoon would ask such a ridiculous question and needed some time to think of a proper response.
After the adventure he had with Jimin in the zoo he promised himself he would get you out of there. He now knew how he could get into the residence, but he also knew damn well he couldn't just walk in there and leave with you without raising at least a few eyebrows. So he figured it was time to do what he had been considering to do from the very start.
Namjoon knew it was… unlikely that he would ever get to speak with YG, the leader of humans and the most powerful man in the universe, but he had to try it. And well, he was of high ranks and had met him once before, with his father of course, but it was something. He figured it was worth the try. Maybe he would listen to Namjoon.
“May I ask why you would want to speak with him?” Seokjin asked “You see, I can't just let anyone speak with him, you need to have a good enough reason.”
That was fair enough, Namjoon thought, he could see why someone like YG couldn't talk to everyone that had to discuss something.
“It's about the wild ones.” Was he supposed to say what it was? ‘Wild ones’ could mean literally anything. Did he have to specify that it was about freeing them? How would he ever just casually tell him that?
“What about the wild ones?” Seokjin sounded hesitant.
Namjoon took a deep breath “Well… I've noticed they look an awful lot like humans and thought that maybe YG made a mistake when he said the wild ones are not at all like humans.” This was exactly how he shouldn't have addressed this, ah well, no turning back now “I thought that maybe, if we'd give them the same opportunities as humans get, they could live like humans. Maybe they are… human?”
The other side of the phone stayed silent for so long that Namjoon thought Seokjin had hung up. That is, until he heard a hesitant “Eh…”.
Namjoon knew he screwed up. He would never get to speak with YG, and he would have to try doing the impossible to get you out.
“Look.” Seokjin's voice said softly after a while, as if no one was supposed to hear what he was about to say “YG will never listen to this, nor take it even slightly serious, so trying will be pointless. Just… leave it as it is, that will make things a lot easier for you.”
What was that supposed to mean? Leave things as it is? He couldn't possibly ignore what he had seen “No, please listen. The wild ones aren't any different from us and I think-”
“I know,” Seokjin interrupted “and we're working on it. Just don't do anything stupid and leave it as it is.”
Namjoon wanted to go in against him, wanted to tell him, explain to him what he had seen and what he knew to be the truth. But Seokjin sighed “Thank you for your call, mister Kim. My apologies but YG's schedule is full so I'm afraid you can't see him. Have a nice day.” and then he hung up. Namjoon looked at the phone in disbelieve, before putting it down again.
Fine, if no one would listen to him it was time to plan a break out.
