Warnings : humour, really silly, self-indulgence, weird french behaviour, gn!reader.
*-*-*
Carlisle :
- The moment 6pm hits the clock, he knows French!Reader is already on their way to grab a glass of rosé and pull out bags of potato chips.
- Carlisle was so confused the first time they did that, and they were so confused why he didn't. It wasn't something other countries did apparently.
- But ever since you moved into the coven, they established their daily 'apéro', even if no one really ate anything.
- Carlisle watched in fond affection when they taught Jasper how to cheer with a loud 'Santé !'. He always made sure they didn't drink too much though, he cares for you too much.
*-*-*
Edward :
- Edward and French!Reader were on vacation in their hometown, in the North of France. The Morbihan was luckily a cloudy region, near the sea. He loved spending time here with you, he really did but...
- Good Lord did this coffee thing lasted a long, long time. He learned to be wary of the moment their family or friends mention getting a little cup of café after dinner or lunchtime.
- It might have been a little café as they said, if you put aside the conversations, the debates and banter. Hence, that little cup took a full hour to drain.
- It was even worse if it was full café gourmand, with little pastries and sweets. But that smile on French!Reader face is worse another hour sitting down among quick french conversations.
*-*-*
Esme :
- Talking about french conversations, Esme was incredibly surprised to hear how passionatly French!Reader talked about heavy subjects like politics and religions.
- She wasn't really shocked by their sense of justice and opinion. It entertained her in a way, she found those conversations incredibly stimulating.
- It wasn't anger, not really, there wasn't any animosity remaining once the topic was closed. They softened however when talking with Esme, she was so calm and patient, even disagreement slid smoothly with her.
- Esme wasn't even fazed when one day, while you were out on a vacation at Washington, she saw French!Reader on TV in a strike for abortion rights. Being with a partner like them filled her with pride.
*-*-*
Rosalie :
- Coming from a high class family, Rosalie used to learn French from childhood. However years in her new life, she didn't many opportunities to use it. Until she met French!Reader.
- At first, she got offended when they held back their laughter at her heavy accent and mistakes in syntax. Realizing their fault, Reader apologized. God knew how dang hard french is to learn.
- After long days before she accepted their excuses, she allowed them to help her practice. A mix of teasing and growing affection.
- "It's "le pain au chocolat" not "la", Rosalie." Reader smiled reassuringly. "Who had this stupid idea of giving gender to a pastry !" She grumbled.
*-*-*
Emmett :
- Emmett never spared a thought about France, french people and even less french étiquette. Not up to the moment he went into a car store, looking for parts to fix up his jeep.
- Once he entered, he couldn't find the part he needed. So he went up and asked the cashier. "You got any break pads in here ?" He grumbled, grumpy he couldn't find it on his own.
- However, French!Reader was already frowning. "First of all "hello" and second of all you say "please". Quelle impolitesse..." They huffed, scolding.
- Emmett behaved really well from here on out. He asked very politely for what he needed, he didn't want to upset the pretty little french cashier. Suddenly, he got really invested in french culture. Maybe he could ask them to teach him how to french kiss...
*-*-*
Alice :
- When Alice first met French!Reader, in a Seattle's bar she got overexcited. She kept asking questions and questions on Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées.
- It bore them a bit, but they knew other countries never thought of France as a complete country, but only as Paris. But Alice was actually very interested when Reader mentioned the different regions of their homeland.
- She gasped at the sight of fields of lavender in Provence, marveled at the Savoie's Alps and beamed at the architecture of old wooden houses in Alsace.
*-*-*
- That night, Alice planned a whole month of traveling through France ans promise to take Reader with her. Yes, this was the first meeting.
Jasper :
- Jasper knew French!Reader from them working with Esme in the architecture industry. They got really close to the coven, and much to the 'young' vampire dismay, they brought their weird greetings with them.
- "La bise" is what they called it. For Jasper, it felt like he was being molested. French people had no business being so damn physical ! You kissed both of his cheek as hello for crying out loud !
- He was fine, Jasper was fine. However, there was life long ban on any European country from now on. Just in case.
- The first time you did that, he looked like he just had a stroke, standing straight like a statue and eyes staring into the void. Reader would call Carlisle in a panic. "My god, I sent him in a cardiac arrest !"
*-*-*
Bella :
- She watched as they almost cried at the sight of the cheese they found. "Why is it in a spray ? Why ?" And then it was the mayonnaise which they found worryingly white and then there was the clear lack of bread.
- Bella watched in a barely contained laughter as French!Reader dispaired in the convenience where they stopped. It was a spectacle really.
- Bella chuckled when French!Reader grabbed her by the shoulders and whispered in a truly heartbreaking tone. "You've got no boulangeries here ? No baguettes at each lunch ?"
*-*-*
- She comforted them while they cried in french. Carefuly, she decided to not mention the lack real french cuisine and that they will probably not a eat a good croissant here either.

Valentine’s Day with a vampire is… different. No bad, just different. I knew that when I woke up that morning and found a single crimson rose on my nightstand, the petals perfect, unblemished- too perfect. Emmett probably stood in the florist’s shop for all of thirty seconds before calling Alice for advice. There was a small note tied to the stem.
Meet me after school. Wear something warm. - E
I smiled before I could stop myself. Emmett Cullen had been in my life for almost a year now. Long enough for the novelty of dating a vampire to fade into something deeper. Quieter. Safer. He never pretended to be human in ways that didn’t fit. He never forced himself to eat or drink just to make me comfortable. He never took me to restaurants and sat there awkwardly watching me chew. Instead, he found other ways. Thoughtful ways. And today, was clearly going to be one of those.
I met up with him after school near the Jeep, grinning like he was holding onto a secret too big for his body.
“You look suspiciously pleased with yourself.” I said as I climbed in.
“That’s because I am.” He replied. “And because Rosalie told me if I messed today up, she’d dismantle my engine.”
I laughed. “Good motivation.”
We didn’t drive toward town. We drove away from it. The trees thickened, the road narrowing until the familiar scent of pine and damp earth filled the air. Forks’ forest wasn’t scary with Emmett beside me. It felt… sacred. Like the world held its breath out here. Eventually, he parked and hopped out, rounding the Jeep to open my door with exaggerated flourish.
“Milady.” He said.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“And you love me anyway.”
“I do.” I admitted easily. That never scared me anymore.
Esme’s handiwork was waiting for us in a clearing. A thick wool blanket laid over fallen leaves. A basket beside it, woven tight and careful. Candles, unlit, because fire safety apparently still mattered even to immortals, were arranged in a lose heart shape. My chest tightened.
“You did all this?” I asked.
Emmett shrugged, suddenly shy in a way that still caught me off guard sometimes.
“Esme helped. She likes holidays. Said humans need good moments like this.”
I crouched and opened the basket. Inside was a thermos of somethingwarm and sweet-smelling, a neatly wrapped sandwich, fruit, and a small tin of chocolates.
“You didn’t make this.” I teased.
“Hey, I supervised.” He protested.
I laughed and leaned up to kiss his cheek. It was cold, always cold, but familiar.
“I love it.” I said. “Thank you.”
His arm slid around my waist as we settled onto the blanket, pulling me easily against his chest.
“I wish I could take you out to dinner.” He admitted quietly. “I know that’s… the normal thing.”
I shook my head, tilting my face up to look at him. “I don’t need normal.”
His smile softened at that.
I ate while the forest breathed around us. Wind whispered through branches. Somewhere far off, a bird called. The thermos turned out to be hot chocolate- rich and perfect- and I suspected Esme had made it herself. Emmett watched me drink it with an expression that was half fond, half nostalgic.
“What?” I asked.
“He hesitated. “Just thinking.”
“About what?”
I tucked my legs under me, turning to face him fully. He was quiet for a moment, eyes distant. Then I asked the question that had been forming in my head all day.
“What was Valentine’s Day like when you were alive?”
That got his attention.
Emmett blinked. “That’s… a throwback.”
“Humor me.” I said. “You lived through the 1920s and 30s. That’s basically a movie era.”
He chuckled. “It kind of was.”
He leaned back on his hands, gaze drifting up through the canopy.
“Back then,” He began. “Valentine’s Day wasn’t this huge production it is now. No social media. No pressure to prove anything.”
I smiled. “Sounds nice.”
“It was quieter.” He agreed. “You might take a girl dancing if you had the money. Or you’d bring her flowers- real ones, not store-bought one. Maybe candy if you were fancy.”
“You were fancy.” I said.
He snorted. “Not even close. I was a farm boy, Y/N. Most of my dates involved dirt and manual labor.”
I laughed, picturing it.
“But there was something… sincere about it.” He continued. “People didn’t say ‘I love you’ as easily. When they did, it meant something.”
His voice softened. “Valentine’s Day was about intention. About choosing someone.”
My fingers curled into his sleeve.
“Did you have someone?” I asked gently.
He hesitated just a fraction too long.
“Once.” He admitted. “A girl named Clara. Sweet. Stubborn. Thought I was reckless.”
“She wasn’t wrong.” I murmured.
He smiled faintly. “No, she wasn’t.”
“What happened?” I asked.
“The Depression.” He said simply. “Life. Time. Plus I was kind of a ladies man and flirted with a lot of women.”
I giggled and shoved him gently.
And then, quieter. “And then I died.”
Silence settled between us, not uncomfortable. Just heavy. I leaned into him, resting my head against his shoulder.
“Do you miss it?” I asked. “Being human?”
He thought about it.
“I miss the simplicity.” He said. “The idea that life was short enough to be precious.”
I looked up at him. “And now?”
“Now,” He said, brushing his thumb along my arm. “life is long. So love has to be deliberate.”
My breath caught.
“I choose you.” He said. “Every day.”
I didn’t answer with words. I kissed him instead.
The sun dipped lower, paintingthe forest in gold and shadow. Emmett pulled a small box from his jacket pocket.
“I’m not proposing.” He said quickly. “Edward told me to clarify.”
I laughed. “Good to know.”
Inside was a delicate silver bracelet, simple and elegant. Tears burned my eyes as he clasped it around my wrist.
“It’s perfect.” I whispered.
“So are you.” He replied, without irony.
I leaned into him as the forest darkened, candles flickering softly around us. Valentine’s Day with a vampire wasn’t about dinners or chocolates or clichés. It was about history. Memory. Choice. And love that somehow managed to feel timeless.

I had always loved Valentine’s Day. Not the cliché stuff with chocolates and teddy bears, but the idea of it- the intention, the thoughtfulness behind it. So when Jasper told me he had plans, I was equal parts excited and nervous. I didn’t know exactly what he had in mind. Jasper never gave away details. He liked the quiet, the planning behind the scenes, the way surprises felt like small acts of magic. And I loved that about him. I trusted him. Always had.
That morning, sunlight sneaked through the curtains of the Cullen house, gentle and pale over the snow-dusted lawn. I had already spilled half a cup of coffee on myself, and I wasn’t even remotely bothered because Jasper was standing there in the doorway, coat in hand, eyes sharp but soft in the way he always looked at me.
“Ready?” He asked, holding out his hand.
I smiled and took it without hesitation. “Always.”
We didn’t use the car. We walked, side by side, away from the paved streets, the ordinary paths, the noise of Forks. It was quiet at first- just the crunch of snow under our boots, the faint call of birds somewhere high in the pines. Jasper’s presence was steady beside me, his grip calm, protective, and grounding. Even though he was a vampire, impossibly strong, and utterly inhuman, I felt safer with him than I had with anyone.
“Are you kidnapping me?” I teased lightly, letting my hand linger in his.
“Yes.” He said smoothly. “Romantically.”
I laughed, the sound spilling into the still air. “I think I can survive a romantic kidnapping.”
The forest thinned as we walked, the trees giving way to open space. The air smelled different here, fresher, almost sweet. I paused, blinking against the sunlight that reflected off the frost-dusted grass.
And then I saw it.
A field of wildflowers stretched out before us, colors spilling across the earth in defiance of the February chill. Yellows, purples, whites- soft, vibrant, alive.
“Oh my God…” I whispered.
Jasper’s eyes followed me, a hint of a smile lifting the corners of his mouth.
“It only blooms for a short time.” He said. “The soil here… is unusual.”
I didn’t question it. I just stepped forward, letting my fingers trail through the flowers, marveling at the soft brush of petals against my skin. My boots sank into the grass, and I felt a warmth spreading through me that had nothing to do with the sun.
“This is… incredible.” I breathed. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Jasper followed me, sitting carefully beside me when we reached the center. I dropped to my knees, tugging my boots off and wiggling my toes in the cool grass.
“You’re allowed to do that too.” I told him, tilting my head at his careful movements.
“I don’t feel temperature.” He said, as if that could explain his hesitation.
“Symbolic.” I corrected gently, nudging him toward the grass.
We settled there together. I lay back for a moment, arms spread, looking at the pale winter sky above. It was vast, infinite, and for a moment, I let myself forget everything except the flowers and Jasper beside me.
“Okay.” I said suddenly, sitting up and brushing snow and grass from my jeans.
“We have to make flower crowns.”
He blinked at me. “We… have to?”
“Yes. Wildflower law.” I insisted. “If we don’t, someone will be very disappointed.”
I gathered a small bunch of flowers and started weaving them together, humming softly as I worked. Jasper watched, silent and patient, his long fingers gently assisting when I passed him stands to hold. He was careful, deliberate, like he could crush the petals if he wasn’t paying attention. I found it endearing, the way he treated something so fragile with such care.
“You’re doing great.” I told him, adjusting the flowers in his hands. He moved slowly, deliberately, each petal placed with precision. Watching him like this made my chest ache. He wasn’t just stronger or beautiful… he was intentional. Thoughtful. Every motion was deliberate, just as everything he did with me seemed to be. When I finished my crown, I leaned forward to place it gently on his head. He sat still, like he trusted me completely, letting me adjust it until it looked just right.
“Perfect.” I whispered.
He looked at me then, and I could see something soften in his eyes. Something quiet, but intense, and it made me feel like I was the only person in the world. I finished mine not long after, placing it crookedly on my own head and laughing at how lopsided it was. Jasper laughed softly beside me, the sound so low and restrained I had to smile.
“You look ridiculous.” I tased, reaching out to nudge his shoulder.
“You look beautiful.” He said instead, eyes catching mine, serious and unwavering.
I froze. The words wrapped around me, warm and insistent, and I felt the familiar fluttering in my chest. The one that told me this was more than just a field, more than just flowers. This was him. All of him. He shifted slightly, leaning closer. My heart hammered against my ribs. Our foreheads nearly touched.
“Can I-” He started.
“Please.” I breathed.
His lips met mine in a gentle kiss, slow and careful, like he was testing the world around us before committing. I kissed him back, hand brushing against his chest. The moment stretched into eternity, surrounded by wildflowers, sunlight, and the quiet rustle of the breeze. When we finally pulled apart, I rested my forehead against his.
“I love this…” I whispered.
He smiled softly. “I love you.” He said.
And in that field, where the flowers bloomed against the cold, I knew it was true. He wasn’t doing it because of obligation, or beauty, or the holiday. He was doing it for me. Just for me. I reached up, weaving one more loose strand into his crown. He laughed at the crookedness of it, but I didn’t care. I loved him, and he loved me. That was enough.
We spent the rest of the afternoon making flower crowns, laughing when they fell apart, teasing each other about whose crown looked worse, and stealing kisses between strands of petals. Every time I touched him, every time he smiled or laughed, I felt alive in a way I hadn’t before.

I wake up to the sound of the ocean. Not the loud, crushing kind- just the steady hush of waves rolling in and pulling back, like the tide is breathing. The window is cracked open, letting in cool, salty air that mixes with the warmth of the bed and the steady heat of the body pressed against mine. Embry.
I don’t open my eyes right away, I don’t need to. I know exactly where I am by the weight of his arms around my waist, by the solid rise and fall of his chest beneath my cheek, by the faint scent of pine and salt and him that has become the definition of safe. I shifted slightly, nose brushing his skin, and he stirs almost immediately. Of course he does.
“Mornin’” He murmurs, voice still rough with sleep.
I smile against his best. “You’re awake already?”
He chuckles softly, the sound vibrating through him and into me. “You moved.”
“That’s it?” I tease. “I breathe differently, and you’re alert?”
“Pretty much.”
I tilted my head up, finally opening my eyes. He’s already looking down at me, dark hair mess, eyes warm and soft in that way that still makes my chest ache a little. Like he’s seeing something precious every time he looks at me.
“Morning.” I say, quietly.
He leans down and presses a kiss to my forehead, slow and lingering. Not rushed, never rushed. I melt into it, because I always do. La Push mornings are my favorite. They’re quiet in a way that feels intentional, like the world hasn’t woken up yet because it knows better than to interrupt. The sky is gray but gentle, clouds hanging low over the water, and everything smells like damp earth and ocean spray.
Embry’s room is small but lived-in. A few posters peeling slightly at the corners, clothes folded neatly enough to show effort, not perfection. The walls hum faintly with warmth from his presence- it’s something I’ve noticed over time, how rooms feel different when he’s been in them for a while. I stretch lazily, legs tangling with his.
He groans dramatically. “You’re gonna make me get up.”
“Good.” I say sweetly. “Breakfast exists.”
He squints at me. “You’re evil in the morning.”
I grin. “You love it.”
He snorts but rolls out of bed anyway, tugging me with him until I squeak and nearly tumble off the mattress.
“Embry!”
He laughs, hands steadying me instantly. “Sorry. Reflex.”
I glare at him for half a second before laughing too, because it’s impossible to stay annoyed when he looks at me like that- like he’s won something just by waking up next to me.
We end up on the beach not long after, shoes abandoned in the sand, jeans rolled up, coffee steaming in mismatched mugs. The ocean is restless today, but calm enough to wade into. Embry walks ahead of me, hands shoved into his jacket pockets, shoulders relaxed. He looks… lighter lately. Happier. I think I might be part of the reason.
“You’re staring.” He says without turning around.
I shrug. “Can’t help it.”
He turns then, eyebrows raised, that teasing half-smile playing at his lips.
“That so?”
I step closer, reaching out to lace my fingers through his. His hand is warm- always warmer than it should be, but I don’t think much of it anymore.
“Yeah.” I say simply. “I like you.”
He laughs, full and genuine. “Wow. Bold confession.”
“I know. Took a lot of courage.”
He bumps his shoulder into mine as we walk. “Good thing I like you too.”
We stop near the waterline, watching waves curl and break, foam rushing around our feet. I lean into his side, resting my head against his shoulder. This… this quiet… is something I never knew I needed until I had it.
Pack life is… loud. Not in the way people think, there aren’t always arguments of chaos, but there’s always something. Energy. Movement. That constant undercurrent of connection humming just beneath the surface. I’m not part of it in the way they are, but I’m close enough to feel it. Embry is different with me than he is with the pack. Softer. More grounded. Like he doesn’t have to carry the weight of being something more when it’s just us. Sometimes, I catch him watching me the way someone watches the horizon. Steady, thoughtful, like he’s anchoring himself. It makes my chest ache in the best way.
Later that afternoon, we’re back at his place, sprawled on the couch. I’m hald-curled against him, legs draped over his lap while he absentmindedly plays with my hair. His fingers are gentle and careful.
“Jake’s gonna come by later.” He says casually. “Said something about burgers.”
I laugh. “Of course he did.”
Embry grins. “You okay with that?”
“Yeah,” I say easily. “I like them.”
He relaxes slightly at that, like he hadn’t realized he was waiting for my answer.
I reached up and tap his chin. “You know you don’t have to ask, right?”
“I know.” He says quietly. “I just… want you comfortable.”
I smile, heart swelling. “I am, with you.”
He leans doen and kisses me, not rushed or hungry, just warm, steady, and sure. Like a promise rather than a question.
That night, after the house quiets and the pack noise fades into something distant and manageable, we lie in bed again, limbs tangled, the sound of rain tapping against the windows.
“Hey.” I whisper.
“Yeah?”
“Do you ever think about… later?” I ask softly. “Not tomorrow, or next week. Just… later.”
He’s quiet for a moment. I can almost feel his thoughts shifting.
“Yeah,” He says finally. “All the time.”
I look up at him. “And?”
He meets my gaze, serious but calm. “I see you.”
The simplicity of it hits me harder than anything else could.
“Me?” I ask, even though I already know.
“Yeah,” He says. “Right here with me. Wherever that ends up being.”
I smile, pressing my forehead to his. “Good, because I see you too.”
His arm tightens around me, protective without being suffocating. Outside, the tide keeps moving. Coming in. Pulling back. But here, I know one thing with absolute certainty, no matter how wild the world gets, no matter how fast things change, I will always find my way back to him. And he will always be there, waiting. Just like the tide.

The Cullen house was quiet. It didn’t happen often, rarely, but tonight every one of them had scattered for one reason or another. Bella and Edward had taken Renesmee to drop off presents with Charlie. Rosalie and Emmett were on a last-minute hunt in Canada (“For the good snow,” Emmett claimed). Jasper and Alice were Christmas shopping, which meant Alice dragged him out the door before he fully understood what was happening. And Esme was taking a late-night run through the forest. Which left only Carlisle and me.
The house was still decorated for Christmas, soft golden lights strung elegantly along the banisters, garlands draped over the mantle, and Esme’s favorite crystal ornaments catching the glow. Outside, snow fell steadily, blanketing the forest in white. It was the kind of night that felt suspended in time. Honestly? It felt perfect.
Carlisle had lit the fireplace even though neither of us needed the warmth, but I adored the glow, the crackling sound, the way it made nights like this feel human and soft. He did it for me, and I felt that love in every small action. I curled up on the couch with a blanket, more for texture than the heat. My legs stretched out, and I waited for him to finish adjusting one of Esme’s garlands that had tilted ever so slightly.
“You know, I’m pretty sure she won’t notice if one ornament is a centimeter to the left.” I teased.
Carlisle turned toward me with that gentle, amused smile that always made my chest flutter.
“Perhaps, but if we’re going to enjoy this evening alone, I’d prefer not to have her rearranging the room the moment she walks in.”
“Fair enough.” I laughed.
He crossed the room in a few steps and sat beside me, the couch dipping just slightly. His hand found my ankle first, warm and steady despite our vampire temperature, then slid up to my calf, a soothing touch that always grounded me.
“You look comfortable.” He murmured.
“Come make me more comfortable.” I said, tugging at his sleeve.
His quiet chuckle rumbled through his chest as he shifted, pulling me fully into his lap. My legs draped across his, my arms slipping around his neck. He wrapped an arm around my waist automatically, holding me like I was the most precious thing in the world to him.
“Better?” He asked softly.
“Much.”
The fire crackled, reflecting in his golden eyes. Tonight, he looked less like the eternally composed family patriarch and more like a man entirely in love, at peace, happy to just have a moment alone with his wife. I ran my fingers through his soft blonde hair.
“We never get the house to ourselves.” I said.
“I know.” He replied, brushing his thumb slowly along my hip. “I’ve missed this.”
“Just the two of us?”
He nodded. “Just the two of us. No interruptions, no chaos.” He smiled. “No Emmett trying to wrestle Jasper in the living room.”
I snorted. “Or Alice popping up behind me and saying, ‘Try this dress on, Y/N.’”
Carlisle laughed, his eyes softening with adoration. “Quite peaceful, isn’t it?”
“Perfect.” I whispered.
He leaned in and kissed me, slow and delicate, the kind of kiss that felt like it could last forever because neither of us needed to breathe. His lips were cool against mine, but the warmth of the fire made the contrast delicious. I deepened the kiss slightly, fingers curling into his hair, and he responded with a quiet sound in his throat, his other hand sliding up my back, holding me closer. When we finally parted, I stayed pressed against his forehead, smiling.
“You know what I miss most about the holidays when I was human?” I asked softly.
“What’s that?” He murmured, brushing a lock of hair behind my ear.
“Quiet nights like this. When everything slows down. When it feels… safe.”
Carlisle’s hand cupped my cheeks. “You are safe. Always.”
I leaned into his touch, letting the moment settle around us like falling snow. We talked quietly for what felt like hours. About his childhood Christmases, about mine, about the strange, sweet tradition of celebrating holidays as immortals. He told me stories I hadn’t heard before, like how he’d sneak cookies with his Mother, make snow lanterns with his father, and watch candlelight church services through forest windows. His voice was soft, warm, and soothing. I could listen to him talk for eternity.
Eventually, I shifted down, lying along the couch with my head resting on his chest, his arm wrapped around me. Even without a heartbeat, he was the calmest place in the world to lay my head. He traced slow circles on my shoulder.
“Y/N?” He whispered.
“Mhm?”
“I’m very glad you’re mine.”
I smiled into his shirt. “I’ve been yours since the moment I saw you.”
He pressed a kiss to the top of my head, lingering there, breathing in my scent as if memorizing it all over again. The fire popped softly, snow continued to fall, and for the first time in a long time, the world outside didn’t matter. Because tonight was ours. Completely, wonderfully, and peacefully ours.

You’ve heard it said that the best moments in life are going to be the ones that creep by without you even noticing. Not for any lack of gratitude or self-awareness — just that no one ever knew they were living through the good times until they were gone.
But in your experience, you’ve come to find that you could taste those special moments as they were forming. Every little detail imprinted itself in your mind, and you could feel the memory forming. A little voice would whisper in your ear, telling you, You will remember this for the rest of your life, and somehow you knew that that was the truth.
And this snowy December evening in this little house with the tin roof was one of those flashbulb moments.
The living room was warm, heat borrowed from the kitchen as dinner cooked in the oven. The smell of roasted chicken made your stomach rumble, and you popped a piece of popcorn into your mouth before stringing the next piece.
From your place on the floor between the couch and the coffee table, you watched Jake wrap a string of lights around the Christmas tree, fiddling with the branches as he went. The thing was slightly too wide for the room, tucked away in the corner as it was, but you knew it was going to look beautiful.
“You’re sure popcorn and lights are a safe combination?” you asked as you put another piece in your mouth.
Jake rolled his eyes, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. “I’ve only told you yes a million times now. I don’t know why you’re so worried.”
“I’m not worried,” you grumbled, concentrating on pulling the next piece along the thread.
Jake snickered. “Whatever you say, my love.”
And as you looked up from your work to pout at him — an ineffective move, since he was turned slightly away from you to adjust a branch in the front — the feeling was suddenly washing over you.
Through the window over Jake’s shoulder, you saw as rain began to intermingle with the snow, the branches of distant trees white and heavy with ice.
You took in the room's wood paneled walls and the mismatched frames that decorated them, the faces of your loved ones smiling back at you. You took in the TV playing Rudolph at a low volume and the sound of the bulbs clinking together as Jake adjusted the cords in his hands.
You took him in: your Jacob, the man you loved, the man who would be devoted to you for the rest of your lives. The plaid button-up he wore, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows revealing warm skin you wanted to brush your lips against. The dark wash jeans that hugged him well. The profile of his face, handsome and focused, his dark eyes intent on his work.
You thought about getting up and going to him, wrapping your arms around his middle and kissing his face. You imagined the way his eyes would dance with love. The way he would kiss you in return.
But in the end, you didn't move. In fact, you weren't sure you could. You were spellbound, captivated by this candid, intimate image of him you got to see.
You felt the worn material of the couch against your back. You saw the totes of decorations, waiting to be unwrapped and unboxed: hand-me-down ornaments, sparkly gold garland and velvet bows, and a brass star to place at the top. They were things accumulated over time and well-kept, indicating a life spent together, your heirlooms blended with his.
And you could hear his voice now, asking a question that you distantly recognize as a continuation of something you’d been talking about earlier — both of you were trying to recall the word for when rain mixed with snow and came down in pellets — but you were too lost in your head to truly hear him.
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. It was a refrain you’d heard time and time again, and in a way, you could acknowledge there was some truth to that.
But you knew better. You knew exactly how much you had to be thankful for, and it was all right here.
( even when i make an effort to write a shorter scene, i'm just incapable of keeping it simple >.< please forgive me )
