Don’t Forget about Reaper Bird.

Hey, so remember the amalgamates from Undertale’s true pacifist ending? And how they all seem to have reunited with their families in the epilogue as well as have Deltarune counterparts in Hometown’s graveyard? And have you noticed that three of the random flavour text lines of the Guei will reflect these aforementioned loved ones?

I’m sure you’ve at least noticed the absence of the memoryheads, the disturbing mishmash of unrecognizable features represented by gelatinous blobs in the overworld. It kinda makes sense for them to be missing, since there aren’t really any family members for them to reunite with, though at least they show up in the cutscene with Alphys… But there’s one more amalgamate that still hasn’t been accounted for: Reaper Bird.

Like the amalgamates Endogeny, Lemon Bread and Snowdrake’s Mother, Reaper Bird has definite components - Final Froggit, Whimsalot, and Astigmatism… but unlike these guys, you cannot find Reaper Bird anywhere. You can backtrack and talk to some Froggits or Loox monsters in the ruins and librarby respectively, but there’s no overworld sprites for Reaper Bird’s family - just the shadowy mercenaries you encounter in the CORE. There’s no Hometown gravestone either - in fact, Everyman has been featured more in Deltarune than Reaper Bird has even been acknowledged at all.

Did the fantastic Mr Fox just… forget about Reaper Bird? Is that it?

In my attempts to at least give myself closure on what happens to this poor bird, I decided to do a little investigating of my own… and I found something a little interesting.

According to the official art book, Reaper Bird was designed first. The phrasing is a little ambiguous - does this mean that RB was the first amalgamate designed, or that RB was designed before the Stronger Monsters of the CORE? The Cutting Room Floor concludes it’s the former but either way I’m taking this to mean the bird was created early on, especially considering an earlier design of Whimsalot is closer to a grim reaper than a courageous knight. We’ll get back to these monsters a little later…

Next, I feel I should consider the Guei darkners that reference other true lab patients and graveyard tombstones. They’re based on the Hope Candles lit in the church atrium, they resemble ghostly birds, and are acknowledged as “zombies” by cuptains. And considering a stray feather from one of them will float into the study money fountain, I’m willing to believe Gerson uses these as a source of quill pens. This is the closest thing we have to Reaper Bird’s presence in Deltarune, given they are both ghostly birds / birdlike ghosts, but it still feels vague.

Then there’s Everyman. Other than having a blank face resembling a plague doctor not unlike Swatch and the Swatchlings, the primary attack (which takes the form of butterflies, remember this for later!), closely resembles the lost souls of Asriel Dreemur’s final boss fight. Everyman has also shown up quite a bit in the background in Deltarune, in the form of graffiti, chat rooms, and scrapped sprites even show this guy in the titan battle. Note that while the term Everyman typically refers to a relatable average person as opposed to wish fulfillment heroes, there’s another use of the term in the story of The Summoning of Everyman that may be more than a little relevant considering some sort of “summoning” seems to have occurred prior to the events of Deltarune.

And one more thing before I finally address the bird in the mirror - this diagram on the Hotland lab desk. We can kinda see diagrams representing human and monster souls, so it’s likely these relate to the determination experiments, especially considering the vessel experiment that seemingly goes on to become the Angel of the prophecy as the God of Hyperdeath at least… but if Flowey was meant to be the vessel, then what is that thing? Doesn’t look very flowery to me.

And now for the Reaper Bird.

You encounter this amalgamate in a very unique way, unlike the other amalgamates which have some physical form before morphing into abstract shapes. Instead of emerging from running water, camoflaging as a refrigerator or save point, or accumulating from air particles, (as with Memoryheads, Snowy’s Mother, Lemon Bread and Endogeny respectively), Reaper Bird only appears after Frisk’s speech bubble appears in front of the mirror from the golden flower room - because that’s what gives Reaper Bird form. And the Overworld sprite we see before the battle, which never appears again in game, strangely resembles Asriel Dreemur’s Chaos Buster attack, providing another odd connection between the God of Hyperdeath and this Grim Angel of Death allusion.

Reaper Bird is also set apart from other amalgamates with regards to its unique battle dialog… or rather lack thereof. Lemon Bread and Snowy’s Mother both have unique dialog, Endogeny is mute like with greater and lesser dog, and Memoryhead gets some unique lines after calling your phone. But all of Reaper Bird’s lines are just recycled from its components and layered on top of each other, much like its design.

Speaking of which, let’s take a look at the Hard Mode monsters that appear in the CORE.

Final Froggit is a stronger counterpart to Froggit from The Ruins… strangely similar to TV World’s Ribbick darkners, which are counterparts to Rabbick from the Card Kingdom. Ribbick has certain rare lines that ominously allude to a certain Dreemurr and Holiday, and the CroakOnX act lets you escape to ManCountry… but in terms of direct connections, both Final Froggit and Ribbick have flavour text describing the scent of mustard seed. That probably doesn’t have any deeper meaning, right?

Whimsalot is a knightly encounter that uses butterflies or moths as part of its attack, similar to the ones used in Everyman’s bullets… and possibly spawning from the strange man in QC’s diner. Despite Whimsalot being a courageous counterpart to the anxious-and-overtly-guilty Whimsun, the flavour text describes the scent of nightshade and bleach, much like Whimsun’s scent of lavender and mothballs. Considering both the knight imagery, and the idea conjured by a buglike encounter smelling like items toxic to insects, I have a feeling this may also be related to Kris’s story in the world of Deltarune.

Astigmatism forms the “face” of Reaper Bird with its eye/mouth gash strangely paralleling the Roaring Knight’s visage. This ocular motif is also present with its name referencing an eye disorder, as well as flavour text referencing prescription glasses. Unlike ‘ol Loox Eyewalker, (encountered several times in that revolving room in the ruins), who is spared with the Don’t Pick On act, Astigmatism has you play “Simon Says”, and echo the battle dialog to be spared. Only for Reaper Bird you do the opposite.

Note that unlike Knight Knight or Madjik these Stronger Monsters aren’t ever referred to as mercenaries, (source: go check the flavour text you won’t be able to unsee it now), which carries the implication that just as you journey through the underground, gaining love (or gaining LOVE…), they too have become far stronger than what you encountered back in the ruins.

Encountering all three Harder Monsters in the CORE results in the flavour text “What a nightmare!” - a choice of words that only confirms my suspicions they may be relevant to the world of Deltarune, when we consider how that word has reappeared especially in regards to shadow crystal battles.

In summary, we have a birdlike amalgamate, formed as an echo of Frisk’s own presence and lacking any words of its own, which battles you through summoning another guy labeled as the “Everyman”, and is formed from three monsters that in retrospect heavily tie into the world of Deltarune… yet it has less of a presence on either world than said Everyman figure.

This is just a basic overview of details you may have missed on an initial UTDR playthrough, because I have this sneaking suspicion that Reaper Bird should be important sometime soon. I could be wrong, this may all just be me shadow boxing with my own pattern recognition…

But hey, even this thing should be right once a day. Or however that saying goes.
