Not related to any already written royal au btw, this is my own thing. You also aren't related to anyone mentioned or seen. You're a human.
Summary: The kingdoms of light and dark have been at war for centuries, bloodshed and devastation that never stops. A table of trusted confidants sits close to the king of light, a chair belonging to you. Your skills with a sword are undisputed, but your king has a new task for you.
Marry the king of darkness to unite the kingdoms in the face of a new threat. Will the two kingdoms be able to overcome their strife with a simple marriage? Or will both crumble in the face of their own hubris?
————————————————————————
You were ten years old when you were told what your true life purpose was. You were born and raised to become the perfect soldier, too smart and strong for your own good. You never met your parents, you didn’t know if you had any siblings, all you knew was a grand palace and the blinding light of a man who sneered behind his smile.
It was hard to comprehend your life now, what it was meant for, your purpose. You become a spouse and then what? You wouldn’t bear children, you wouldn’t sit aside and let others run the show, you wouldn’t stop fighting for everything you wanted. Political involvement would be granted to you once you were married to King Nightmare, officially no longer a resident of the kingdom of light, a political bargaining chip fulfilling what it was made for.
It made you feel dirty. Used. Violated.
Gods, you needed to get out of your head. The wedding began in only a few short hours, the castle bustling and alive with last minute preparations. You were staring out the window in your room, down at the people who were lugging things over the bridge and into the castle. People were starting to gather, desperate to be the first in to experience another grand wedding for yet another one of King Nightmare’s lovers.
Except you weren’t another one of his lovers. He was a friend at most, someone you could never truly confide in past surface level things and whatever you accidentally let slip. Love and romance weren’t apart of the equation, no courting, no dates, just a marriage and then keeping you around until you died. You didn’t doubt that it could be good, something fulfilling, but why did it still bother you?
Would this ever be enough? Could you be happy? Or would you forever be staring at a you that could’ve been? Standing tall and accomplished, retired young, living elsewhere, far away and unbothered.
You hated wishful thinking, all it did was make you sad.
“Your majesty!” Everest and Esther pushed into the room, both buzzing with excitement and hands full of fabrics, “it’s time to get dressed, are you ready?” You turned from the window, smiling something melancholy and tired, “yes. Do what you must.” The two quickly pulled you into a whirlwind of attire, a two piece set of frills and sheer fabrics, cloaks and covering pieces at your request. It matched the king’s as no fabric used in your’s was missing from his.
Esther helped you dress as Everest did your hair, curling in silver jewelry that dangled and chimed. Silver lined your ears, banded your fingers, cupped your wrists, entangled your throat, then sat heavy on your head. You could barely recognize yourself in the mirror of the vanity, sitting poised and calm, eyes a show of inner turmoil you chose to ignore.
Was it the clothes? The glittering metal? The two women who bounced around without a thought of what your mind screamed at you? Could you do this?
Could you do this?
“Are you ready? You get the final say, so you must do a tour of the palace.” You stood up, flattening the fabrics on your legs, “I’d like to do it alone if that’s okay.”
“Oh- of course!” Everest smiled, “we have to keep running around anyways, have fun your majesty! Call if you need us!” The women left you be, door shutting behind them and silencing your room once again. You turned to the full-length mirror, taking in the person you could easily call a stranger. Something deep and angry was boiling within you, a hatred, an anger, a desire to kill that had always itched at your skin. Your fists clenched, you tried to breathe, tears welled and blurred the stranger into completely unrecognizable streaks of color.
You screeched something horrid and grabbed the vanity chair, hurling it with all the strength you had at the mirror. The pieces fell and wood splintered, spilling across the floor, broken and discarded.
Just like you.
You panted, looking down at the shards and chunks around your feet. The tears dripped to gather with the carnage, clearing your eyes to see yourself in a particularly large piece of glass. You stepped on it, crunching beneath your shoe as you stomped and stomped and stomped.
You wiped your eyes and took a breath, stepping away and to your bedroom door. It didn’t matter what you wanted, it never had, it never would. You opened your room to the chaos outside of it, stepping into the hallway without looking back.
The palace was beautiful and grand like it always was, but you could see the effort everyone had contributed to meeting your wants. You saw performers setting up for shows in the gardens, a band next to the grand piano you wished to play by your lonesome, tables in the throne room lined with food and beverages, decor along every wall and windowsill. You spotted Dust and Cross talking by the throne, Horror talking to a gaggle of servants, Killer sneaking snacks from a table far away from everyone else, Error hiding up on the second floor balcony, and Nightmare staring out the window nearest to the main gates.
He made eye contact with you, beckoning you closer with a tilt of his head. You complied, joining him to stare out the window, his cold hand cupping your bicep securely in a way that felt almost like he was grounding you to reality, “there are many.” You stated, “the castle won’t be big enough.”
“You’re right, many will be stuck outside for hours, but everyone will get their turn.”
“How long will this last?”
“Until deep into the night, but that’s just the celebrations. We will be married at the twelfth hour, you will then officially be royalty.”
“Hm..still not sure if I believe this is happening. It feels weird.”
“How so?”
“Like I’m staring at myself from someone else’s eyes, even though I’m aware I can see through my own.” The King’s hand trailed from your bicep to your hand, cupping it in his, “it’ll all be okay. I am here.” That didn’t comfort you as much as you’d hoped it would, but you didn’t voice that particular thought, “thank you.” You said instead, but it sounded fake, even to you.
The king took you around the rest of the palace and you gave the go-ahead on everything you saw. You couldn’t care less anymore about what matched now that it was all set up, not about to make some poor servant scramble for a replacement right before showtime. The king was called away by Red and Fresh just as you reentered the castle from the gardens, Charcoal taking the king’s place beside you.
The skeleton held out his elbow and you wearily held on, led to the throne room and seated in one of the smaller thrones that had been placed beside King Nightmare’s. You figured since they took up so much room they were only used for important occasions such as this. Your’s was the furthest to the right, chairs in order of first spouses closest to the king and newest at the ends. Error sat beside you, cross sat in the furthest left chair and was joined by dust in the middle, then Killer and Horror sat on the direct sides of the main throne. Just as you were, they were dressed to the nines, glittering and shining with zero effort.
You felt like glass next to diamond.
It was almost time. You’d be married in less than twenty-four hours. Your breath hitched and your eyes welled as the thought settled in your bones, gripping the fabric over your thighs in an attempt to stop your rising panic. Shit- not now. Not now.
“[Name]?..” Error whispered, noticing the shake that plagued your hands and the way your eyes stared off into space. You bit your bottom lip, feeling the heat that came before tears reached your face, “Hey- hey, breathe..”
“I can’t do this.”
“What?”
“I’m gonna throw up-“ you shot to your feet, startling all the skeletons. You rushed from the throne room; skidding to your knees in a random hallway and throwing up all over the ground. Servants rushed to your sides, holding your hair back as you coughed up half digested breakfast and acid. Tears spilt down your face and into the vomit, heaving like air couldn’t reach your lungs.
“Move! I said move!” Of all the people in the castle you expected to be there, Horror crouching beside you and swiping your face clean with a rag he snatched from the nearest servant was the last. He helped you sit back on your knees, taking your hands in his significantly larger ones, “breathe [Name]. All you can do is breathe.” He led you through a few deep breaths until you collapsed forward into his chest, hunched and shaking with a strangled sob, “I can’t do this- I can’t do this. I can’t! I can’t do it but they’ll kill me for treason if I don’t!” Your body forced out another cry, “I’m not made for this! I’m not- I wasn’t made for any of this!” Horror winced at your voice, your fears and regrets spilt all over him and wetting into the front of his outfit. He felt out of his element, used to comforting his husbands, but not someone he’d actively tried to kill in the past.
He’d seen you bleed, snarl, lead with an iron fist, but never break down. He’d never seen you crumple to your knees or wail in fright, your hands too unsteady to do much more than paw at his chest, looking for grip to steady yourself. He huffed, slowly encircling you in his arms to ground you, “shhh..it’s okay. You’re alright.” He looked to the side, seeing Cross and Error standing there. He beckoned them over and helped you into Cross’ arms, letting him take Horror’s place for physical comfort.
He ordered a few servants to clean up the mess you’d created and watched Error usher you and Cross to the nearest bathroom to clean you up. He didn’t like the ache in his soul he felt for you then, something unfamiliar and strange, a softness growing over his violent memories of you.
“What happened?” Horror turned to Nightmare, eyes sad, “[Name] just needs a minute.”
“Are they alright? Where are they?”
“They’re with Cross and Error, bathroom down the hall. They got in their head about the wedding.” Nightmare’s brow furrowed, bringing a concerned hand up to his mouth to think, “we’ll start the festivities, but [Name] will stay out of the public eye until they feel ready. We can’t cancel now or the people will riot.” Horror nodded, “I’ll go give the go ahead, go check on [Name].” Nightmare disappeared down the hall and Horror joined Killer and Dust by the throne. No words were exchanged, the three giving the go to open the gates.
People piled in and the party started, filling the grand palace with sounds of chatter and excited laughter. Music filtered down the halls, people cheered and awed at the performances in the gardens, ate the food laid out for all to enjoy.
“My Star.” You looked up from the running sink, Cross rubbing your back and Error sitting up on the sink beside you, “I’m sorry-“ you started, but Nightmare shushed you, “no, none of that. You did nothing wrong.”
“I ruined everything.”
“Nothing is ruined, everything is just fine.”
“I’m freaking out over my own wedding. How is that not ruining everything?”
“it’s a big change. You’re allowed to be scared.” You hated being talked to like this. You hated the reactions you couldn’t choke down.
“Being scared hasn’t ever gotten me anywhere. It got my men killed, got the head general killed, and it’ll get me killed too.” Your voice was too snappy, hands too tense, brow too furrowed,
“What do you mean?”
“It’s you or nothing.” Nightmare paused, a sinking feeling in his soul, “what?..”
“I don’t marry you and I get executed. The kingdom of light would see to it if you didn’t first. I have to do this no matter if I want it or not, because my life is on the line- and so is an entire war between my home and here.” You sighed, standing up straight and steeling yourself, “I’m fine. I got it out of my system.”
“[Name]. I would never-“
“I’d like to believe that, truly I would.” You moved away from the three, heading for the door, “but it doesn’t matter, because I’m marrying you. I’ll fulfill my obligation.” You didn’t wait for a response, leaving the conversation behind, somehow already composed like that entire breakdown never happened.
Nightmare stared after you, a heavy weight of dread settling on his shoulders, “[Name]..what did they do to you?”
