I was recently allowed by smthstupid64, one of the devs of Yo-kai Craft, to make medal art for one of the new Yo-kai Craft original variants: Kuroi Mirapo! I don’t know any of the lore for it, so I can’t do a write-up on it, but I do know that it’ll be in one of the new Quests introduced in the new update, because Yo-kai Craft has Quests now.

I put it behind some clouds in its medal art because Ungaikyō, it’s Japanese name and the name of the actual real yōkai legend that Mirapo was based on, means “mirror behind the clouds”.

The template used to make this medal was actually started by my friend Bencaua, who made me some templates for the three regular types of medals, which I then edited to made all the other types.

I think it's a cool detail, so I just wanted to point it out, but this line Yang's mother says in Zen Ungaikyo's memory scrolls is a reference to the famous opening passage of Heike Monogatari ("The Tale of the Taira Clan").

It's a classic japanese epic compiling the conflict between the Taira and the Minamoto clans during the Genpei War at the end of the Heian period.

The beginning of the tale announces the inevitable fall of the Taira through the Buddhist law of transience and impermanence.

"The prosperous must decline" is a phrase from the Humane King Sutra which says that "The prosperous inevitably decline, the full inevitably empty."

In buddhism, sala flowers are a symbol for impermanence and fleeting glory due to how quickly they bloom and fall.

Being a buddhist monk himself, Yang references this idea on multiple occasions. Even his and Yin's theme song says that 美しいものほど儚くて散りやすい ("The more beautiful something is, the more fleeting and easier to scatter it is").

The way I see it, the reference emphasizes both the inevitable fall of the persisting evil in the story (the wars, the evil god), but also the inevitable breaking and separation Yin and Yang experienced. It applies to both good and evil in this case and it's pretty bittersweet :')

-Ungaikyo, Distorted Mirror-

A yokai whose name means “Mirror beyond the clouds”. Its said to be born from an old mirror who gained sentience, and is considered a type of tsukumogami. The term had many different meanings across the years, but is today generally understood as a specific type of yokai, born when an object used by humans reaches its 100th birthday and gains self-awareness. Tsukumogami usually assume a form resembling a monstrous version of the object they used to be. Unlike many yokais, tsukumogami aren't usually malicious or harmful to humans by nature, but can hold some grudge against their previous human owners depending on how well maintained they were in the their "previous life". An Ungaikyo has the ability to distort that which is reflected upon it, showing those who gaze upon it as hideous demonic versions of themselves. It may also have the ability to trap spirits in itself, which in some cases may start to manipulate the mirror for their own evil deeds from within. A similar legend exists in China, where King Zhou of the Shang dynasty used a demon revealing mirror called the Shomakyo to reveal the true form of his consort as the evil fox-shapeshifter, Daji. With her true nature exposed ahd her plans to ruin the kingdom foiled, she escaped to Japan where she again would wreak havoc as the evil kitsune, Tamamo no Mae.

Can sometimes be a mirror that can trap spirits, or a tsukumogami that reveals hidden supernatural beings. They're known to alter the reflections of people, and give them a nasty surprise! Either that or the person is actually possessed!
