Computer Science at Brunel University
As you may already know I'm in my last year at Brunel University studying Computer Science (Software Engineering). I decided I'd give everyone a quick review/summary of my experience here.
Information Systems and Organisations
This was one of my favourite years, the course is very light and allows you to have plenty of free time to socialise. We got taught programming from scratch. The first language that we we're taught was Python. Then we moved onto Java. It was a very smooth transition and I'm glad it was done the way it was done. The most useful skill I picked up from this year was how to work in a group. One of the modules is a group project, where your put into a random group to build a html website. This made me more confident as a leader. The hardest module for me was the Logic and Computation module, you get thrown in the deep end with a programming language called "logic". I'm sure if I look at it now, i'd be fine though.

Second year was another great year for me. After being slowly introduced to programming concepts in first year. The second year brings you to the idea of building large scale software that would actually be used by real people. Modules such as Usability Engineering and Software Development and Management really help you make the right decisions while developing software, that I wouldn't of know about if I didn't come to university. For example the numerous ways of testing software. My personal favourite module was Networks and Operating Systems, the book that is suggested by the university is Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach, 4/E , which I think is the most readable computer science book I've ever read. It mixes computer science with physics in an easy simple readable form. The hardest module I think personally was the Algorithms and their Applications module. This is because my maths isn't the greatest, I need things to be broken down for me to understand instead of just know. I don't believe the teaching for this module was the best, either way I passed.
