Would Your Inner Child Be Proud of You?

When I was a child, like many others, I was taught about Nazi Germany in school.

"What a terrible thing," "How could people just stand by when their neighbors were being dragged away to be killed?" "If I had been alive then, I wouldn't have just sat there. I would have been like those heroes who stood up, hid those who were targeted, or broke people out of camps."

Then, I would fantasize about such a scenario—how brave and good I would be, how cool and heroic.

Unfortunately for everyone, no time machine is needed. We are living in such times now. The immigrants, or those who look like it; the ones born in the wrong bodies and fought so hard to change them; those who chose to love someone and have that love returned. We are in danger.

My flesh comes with certain privileges. I can hide for longer from these targeted attacks—perhaps indefinitely, if I throw away my voice and become the echo chamber they crave.

But then I would have to look at that tiny child—the one who knew deep down in their core that they would be good, heroic, and do the right thing—and tell them that when you had just that chance, you were none of those things.

There are things you can live with, and things you cannot. I cannot live with that.

I cannot say I love my country. I have never seen the point in staying loyal to a place that no longer benefits you. But now my country is embarrassing me, and that is far worse. I will not try to help my country because I believe this is a temporary hiccup in an otherwise flawless home and cornerstone of my identity. I will do the right thing so I can tell the world at large that I’m not with them, and my younger self that I did not sit by.

If any of you are still undecided or have already stepped aside and fallen in line, I ask you this:

Would your child self be proud of you and can you live with that answer?
