You know what, you're right. People have a choice to go march or stay home. They have a choice to leave when the tensions rise. Or at least it may seem that way when you are removed, by physical and racial distances, from the issues at hand.
For a lot of people, they are literally fighting for their right to walk the street with out being molested by police. George Floyd was murdered over the suspected forgery of $20; there are others, it's in the news every week, every day. I'm trying to learn their names because it is important! I heard there was one girl shot down asleep in her bed because police entered the wrong address. Shameful. And the police in the US seem to suffer very little consequence for their clearly biased actions.
I'm not endorsing riots, or looting or burning shit down, but I understand how we got here. I am saying look at the 60s. Black rights, gay rights, civil rights; all started with protests and riots. The USA was born out of a violent uprising and built upon the backs of black slaves, who later had their own violent uprising! So I understand how and why there is unrest. It's an ugly situation and it'll probably get uglier before it ends, but we can't have basic human dignity and civil rights for all, until EVERY demographic has free and easy access to the same basic human dignity and civil rights as society's most prominent citizens.
I know I benefit from white privilege. And I know I will make mistakes in being an ally because of it.
I know it is not my voice that matters; it is YOUR voice, YOUR fight. I am here to be your ally.
So please tell me when I'm wrong. Tell me when I'm right. Tell me when to listen and when to speak, where to stand and how to fight. I will stand with you!
