Superman Family by Nahuel Grego.
Hello! I’ve recently seen some art that you commented on that was superbat but the races were changed and they were black. I’ve always been curious about this, why do people seem interested in changing the race of characters? Obviously it’s their art and they can do as they please and I love their art style and superbat! :)
But I’m just genuinely curious and a bit confused as to why. I’ve seen people complain about white washing characters and would like to know why race changing is done? Is it just a fun different thing to do? I really do like all the interpretations and unique hair styles that people are able to put into these characters! <3 but I’m just a bit confused as to why they don’t just use canon black attackers I guess? I really don’t mean to sound rude, I’m just curious as to why. I figured you would be knowledgeable in this aspect so I came here to ask. You don’t have to answer is this makes you uncomfortable…I just would like to know why people feel compelled to do this.
Anyway, I love your posts of Duke Thomas! All the more love to that little guy lmao
Hope you have a great day/night! <3 (again, so sorry if I came off as rude, I really didn’t mean to 😅)
The posts you're referring to are actually Jace Fox's Batman and Val-Zod's Superman, not Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, so that wasn't racebending. These are two Black canon characters with those same titles.
Racebending and whitewashing can't be compared:
Whitewashing is something that has been used to erase Black and brown people people from history, media and all kinds of industries even to this day. Whitewashing is a tool used for racists to continue glorifying whiteness and encourage white supremacy. It's used as a way to say that white is better, more beautiful, more worthy etc. And to take away from the achievements and stories that aren't centered on white people.
Racebending is how Black people include themselves in stories and narratives they've been actively excluded from. Having grown up with the bare minimum - more often less - of representation in media, we have had to learn to relate to white characters and miraculously grew to genuinely like them as well. But we actually want to see ourselves in them and explore how that character would navigate their world with our skin so we change it. Sometimes we just do it bc the character would genuinely look better if they were Black (no one is convincing me Steph wouldn't look great with blonde passion twists) but mostly it's a way to actually give ourselves what media and fandom alike deny us. So it is a fun thing to do but also quite a bit deeper than that depending on the person.
As for why they don't use canon Black characters, well as the art we talked about earlier showed, they do, it's a matter of the media, fandom, or both ignoring that in favor of white characters.
I'd recommend looking at some video essays on whitewashing and the damage it does to racialised communities if you want to get a better understanding and as for racebending, I hope now that you understand it a little better you can continue to enjoy the awesome art and support the artists who spoil us all with their masterpieces 💜
In my world, these three are besties !
My version of the dc universe part 1
The superman family
Clark Kent aka Superman champion of the oppressed is a rather average Kryptonian at 6 foot 5 inches tall, tho kryptonians can be much smaller and much larger they also come in much lighter and darker shades of skin and have more hair colors
Kara in this universe landed on new genesis but left from planet to planet doing vigilante justice where ever she can until she heard about a "superman" on earth that sounded like her cusion kal
Lois Lane becomes an energy powered superwoman when superman was busy in another country and lois helped smaller local heroes help stop an experimental reactor that was rigged to explode using alien tech due to getting caught in the blast she gained access to a form made of pure energy (like superman red and superman blue)
Conner kon-el Kent is taller than normal but in almost every way hes unchanged tho he is dating Tim and Bernard and he goes bye "superman man of tomorrow"
Chris val-vod Kent aka superman man of steel is basically just the superboy from the show young justice but all grown up and raised bye zod till he was ten and raised by Lois and Clark until he was 20 he's also dating miss Martian
John Henry irons is steel, unchanged from his comic counterpart
His daughter is steel 2.0 and story wise unchanged tho I redesigned her suit
Bradley biz-el bizzaro Kent is still the clone of superman but he's also legally his brother and now goes bye the hero name of bravery
Redstar is the superman of Russia, basically I combined the Chinese justice league batman inc and JL international to make an initiative where they set up existing heroes as equivalents to the main justice league members
Jon Kent in this universe has both his parents powers able to convert forms of energy into each other tho he's nowhere near as strong durable or fast as father and until hes 15 he can't fly he also starts a team with damien called the legacies
Val-Zod
