I’m an infp and I’m curious about the correlation between internalised homophobia and dominant Fi. There’s an ask in the lgbt tag where you talk about the correlation between auxiliary Fe and internalised homophobia. Repressing my feelings in order to fit into the norm made me miserable. I accepted it in the end, but I’m still affected by others perception of me. I don’t want to be mislabelled or misunderstood. In general I’m curious abt wether some types are more prone to struggle with this
Personality type is only one factor among many that contributes to the formation of a value system. To understand how people internalize values, there are two general mechanisms to consider:
1) Ego development: Everyone must go through stage 2 ego development (see the Type Dev guide). To function in life, you are required to discover strategies for existing comfortably/safely in your social environment. When you discover healthy strategies, healthy ego development continues on; however, some people don’t and they get stuck at this stage. (In terms of being a member of a social minority group, there are strong environmental factors that prevent a person from discovering healthy socializing strategies through no fault of their own, thus they have a bigger hurdle to jump to get to self-acceptance.) Many sociocultural values are unconsciously adopted at this early stage since they are necessary for accruing social capital for oneself.
2) Extraverted judging function development: The Fe and Te functions are used for integrating well into the objective world via adopting collectively agreed upon social values or facing up to factual/universal standards, respectively. When the judging functions aren’t developed well, a person is more likely to internalize problematic values that produce wrong/extreme judgments. For example:
FPs internalize problematic values when there is intense incongruency between high Fi (natural self-acceptance) and low Te (critical judgments about being a moral failure). Immature FPs often suffer from low self-esteem as harsh Te shouts down their insecure and unstable Fi self-regard, which either causes them to be extremely fragile (and hide away for self-protection) or act out in self-destructive ways (to achieve a fake sense of personal power).
FJs internalize problematic values when high Fe fails to establish positive relationships and low Ti tries to calculate the “cause” of the failure. Immature FJs often suffer from low self-worth as their vulnerable Fe feels socially inferior and critical Ti misattributes the blame for it, either by blaming oneself for being inadequate (and then “correcting” oneself in harmful ways to achieve affirmation) or by deflecting blame onto others for their inadequacies (to achieve a fake sense of social superiority).
Being at stage 2 ego development means that you aren’t conscious of your value system and how you adopted those values, so you don’t have the ability to question them, change them, or adjust them to be more realistic and reasonable. Therefore, regardless of type, such individuals seem quite rigid, oversensitive to invalidation, and often mistake their beliefs as fact. When a person hovers between stage 2 and 3 development, they start to understand the need for self-acceptance but they are still affected by social perceptions of them.
