steve doesn’t let anyone see when he‘s in pain. his parents never picked up on him being ill unless it was pretty severe, and even then they used to make him feel like a burden because of it. so he just doesn‘t show it nowadays.

when he starts to hang out with eddie more, it‘s not him that picks up on it when steve‘s not feeling good, but wayne. raising a boy all by yourself makes you pick up on those kind of things.

he sees how steve will sometimes squint when it‘s too bright in the room, sees how he flinches when there‘s a sudden loud noise. how he slightly relaxes when eddie absentmindedly runs his fingers through steve‘s hair (wayne doesn‘t like poking around in eddie‘s love life. but the fact that that thought crosses his mind when he‘s watching them says something. if he asked eddie about it he‘d probably say they‘re just very touchy friends).

so he talks to eddie about it when steve‘s not around. tells him that he thinks there’s something going on with steve. what eddie can look out for, and that he should talk to steve about it.

steve‘s first instinct when eddie brings it up to him is to laugh and play it off. he doesn‘t want to burden eddie with his own bullshit that he can deal with himself.

but eddie keeps pushing until steve admits that yeah, he gets headaches really often. that normal painkillers only help a bit, that light hurts his eyes, that they make the ringing in his ear even worse (eddie makes a mental note to bring that one up again later) and that he can barely concentrate whenever they come on. that he finds it hard to concentrate anyways, most of the time.

it‘s probably because of all the times he got hit in the head, he tells eddie.

he says that he doesn't want to be alone when he has the headaches, because that just makes him feel even worse. that's another reason why he never told anyone. (he also tells him about the russians, finally. eddie gives steve a hug afterwards, and steve almost cries into his shoulder. but he holds it back. eddie can hear his breath hitch.)

from that day on they have an agreement that steve has to tell him whenever he doesn‘t feel good. or that he at least won’t hide it. eddie goes over to steve's place when he knows it's one of those days, or he invites steve to his trailer. he turns off the lights when steve needs it to be dark, keeps explaining things to him when he doesn‘t understand them the first time, tries to be as quiet as possible.

he also keeps running his fingers through his hair, but it's more intentional now. he can tell that it helps steve relax, turns it into more of a massage. when steve slips off into sleep, after a while of him protesting that eddie really didn't need to do this, he lets his fingers roam a bit more. over his eyebrows, down the sides of his nose, over his cheekbones. unknowingly taking care of him in a way that no one ever really had before. steve sighs in his sleep.

i just know steve sits with robin when she‘s overstimulated and just needs to be in the presence of someone who gets it, gets her, but still gives her space to decompress and stim

i‘m going to project again and say. what if. steve‘s parents own a construction company and they get steve to work for them. he‘s in charge of smaller stuff in the office, like making sure all the paperwork‘s correctly filed and stuff, but he works in a part of the building that the construction workers have to go to in order to clock in and out.

and. construction worker eddie. who‘s been working there for almost as long as steve has, and always offhandedly gives him shit about being the bosses son. but it‘s just playful banter. at least steve’s pretty sure it is.

and if he‘s being honest, he‘s always looking forward to when eddie‘s done with his shift and walks by steve‘s desk all distracted and sweaty, only for him to turn back towards steve after he‘s clocked out and wink at him or comment on steve‘s choice of clothing for the day.

steve starts to put on specific shirts or accessories that eddie‘s commented on before, just to get another reaction out of the guy. he finds himself waiting for 5 o‘clock, checking the time just as often as his hair in the mirror.

but there‘s also times where eddie‘s just plain grumpy, had a bad day, and steve always expects him to just walk out without saying anything. for some reason, though, steve‘s the only person there that eddie actually talks to or at least gives him an appreciative eyebrow raise and a nod.

one day steve‘s dad decides it‘d be good for his son to get some actual hands on experience. so he gets sent to the construction site with the other guys, absolutely not prepared for what awaits him. he‘s so grateful when he notices that eddie‘s in the group he‘s working with that day, and he’s immediately taken under his wing.

he teasingly judges him about not knowing things that, by now, are so logical to eddie, but shows him the ropes anyways. they finally have an excuse to talk more to each other, and eddie drags steve along on his smoke breaks (maybe because steve insisted that, sure, he still smokes).

his dad expected steve to throw a fit after the first day, but he actually finds he doesn’t mind the work. he gets to get to know eddie a bit better, shares beers with him and the rest of the crew when they‘re done with everything. the added bonus of occasionally seeing eddie‘s tattooed and shirtless body covered in sweat and dirt isn‘t too bad either, something in the back of steve‘s mind supplies. but it‘s not like he‘s gonna tell his dad about that.

and maybe, one time after they‘re done with work, proud of everything they‘d accomplished during the day, steve invites eddie over to his place to hang out. and maybe, they arrive at work the next morning at the same time. in the same car. with eddie wearing one of steve‘s shirts.

eddie just scratches off his nailpolish instead of taking it off properly because he‘s too impatient. the first time nancy witnesses this she berates him about how bad that is for his nails and takes it off for him while going on and on about how it makes his nails break easier.

steve just watches the exchange, confused look on his face (and trying not to let his eyes linger on eddie’s hands) while robin shamefully looks at her own nails that she occasionally does the same thing to.

mike copying eddie‘s hanky since it‘s canon that he wants to be more like him and eddie seeing it and freaking out bc there‘s no way this 14 year old boy knows or should know about what it means

steve getting pissed at eddie for not letting mike dress the way he wants to after eddie told mike off

eddie having to awkwardly explain to steve what the hanky code is and steve getting SO flustered he just drops the topic completely but does make sure mike doesn‘t wear that anymore (they‘ll explain it to him when he‘s older)

(maybe steve does tell mike in a more toned down 14 year old appropriate way what it‘s for and maybe just maybe that helps mike a bit with his bi awakening)

eddie absolutely hates the task of cleaning his van. he shrugs and tells the kids to clean it themselves or get another ride when they complain about the state of it.

so when he picks them up one day and it's clean, not only on the outside but also on the inside, they're surprised. but they put it off as a one time thing, because he HAS to clean his car at least like once a year, right?

but it keeps happening. it doesn't get dirty anymore. it's almost like there's some magical thing going on that just... keeps his van clean at all times. at this point they're too worried about losing their ride to ask though.

little do they know that it's not anything magical that's happening to eddie's van, but steve harrington. he witnessed the state of it a few times when eddie picked him up so they could go to a quiet spot and smoke a bit, and he was definitely not happy about it.

he asked eddie if he even cared about his van if he let it get this dirty, because he could never imagine doing that to his own car. and eddie explained that the van is his baby, but he just can't muster up the energy to clean it. it's like everytime he sets his mind on cleaning it, he gets distracted by more important things or he just freezes up on the couch and does nothing, getting lost in a movie or book until he doesn't have time to clean it anymore. sure, it's not his favorite task, but he does WANT to clean it for the cars sake.

so steve offered to clean it for him. and at first eddie declined, he couldn't let someone else do something that was his responsibility, but steve insisted that it was actually something that he enjoys doing. that he cleans his own car more often than necessary because he likes doing it.

so they came to an agreement. steve would clean eddies car once a week, and eddie would just be there to keep him company. which is mainly why eddie said yes to the proposition, he definitely likes spending time with steve. and eddie didn't know it, but the fact that steve likes cleaning cars wasn't the main point that made him make that offer to eddie.

(when max witnesses steve cleaning the van in front of eddies trailer one time, she immediately tells the others. sure, they know that steve's very particular about his own car but why is he cleaning eddies? and then she sees eddie watching the way that steve leans over the hood to get the dirt of the windshield with a slight blush on his face that's almost not visible because he's hiding it behind a strand of his hair. and suddenly she gets it.)

(that doesn't change the fact that they're all definitely getting on eddie's nerves about this whole situation the next time they're all in his van because how could they not.)

eddie just whips his head towards steve and goes “you‘re bi??” while steve just nods contentedly.
