1850s French cut crystal vinaigrette.
Perfume in Regency Ωmegaverse
Since there’s a big emphasis on alphas’ and omegas’ sense of smell in a lot of fic, I thought of a RL object that could be adapted to fit into a Regency A/B/O AU, and that’s the vinaigrette.
Heard of smelling salts? Well a vinaigrette is a similar thing.
It’s a small ornamental silver box, like a snuffbox. Inside, there’s a perforated layer like a second lid, sometimes cut out in an elaborate design, and underneath that is a sponge soaked in vinegar (hence the name) or other strong perfume.
Whenever a lady felt a fainting spell coming on, she (or more commonly someone else) would whip open a vinaigrette, and the perforations meant she could smell the soaked sponge inside (which in theory would bring her round).
So women would collect these boxes, sometimes with a certain theme (I’m sure I remember reading about somebody who would only have vinaigrettes shaped like silver fishes), and keep them in their reticules (that’s the name for those little drawstring purses; the Regency equivalent of the clutch bag) for emergencies.
[see under the cut for some examples of vinaigrettes]
Now wouldn’t that be a great idea for omegaverse?
maybe it would be the omegas using them, for fainting spells
(would an older omega, ‘dried up’, past the age of being scented, be expected to have smelling salts instead? in the same way that older women used to have to wear caps on their hair/cover up more?)
or it could be the alphas using them to help cope with the omegas’ scents?
it could be both, and there’d be certain fashionable styles of vinaigrettes to distinguish between them.
imagine a sneaky alpha using an empty one so they can take big sniffs while omegas are around without getting challenged to a duel over it, lol.
there could be all kinds of etiquette around their use!
maybe it’s considered uncouth of an alpha to use one while looking directly at an omega, because that’s tantamount to shouting You Smell So Good I’m Suffering.
or maybe it would be a part of courtship; an alpha making an omega a gift of a particularly fine vinaigrette (heart-shaped?) as a symbol of their commitment (giving someone perfume, as if to say ‘I want to be able to scent you.’)
Do you put vinaigrette on your salad?
Yes
No
I don't eat salad
Wild Seed Vinaigrette
1 ounce red onion or shallots (chopped) 1/2 jalapeno or similar pepper (chopped) 2 teaspoons pickled wild seeds 1 tablespoon homemade Dijon mustard (black mustard seeds) 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon Italian herbs (I use my own blend of wild spices) 3 tablespoons elderberry wine vinegar or red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons water Salt to taste
Cannellini Bean Salad
Cannellini bean salad is a terrific side dish for a summer cook-out. It’s easy to make, healthy, and is dressed with a simple olive oil and lemon vinaigrette. Although the recipe calls for cherry tomatoes, I had some gorgeous Jersey tomatoes that I used instead. There’s plenty of room to improvise here, I was thinking a little sliced avocado would be a good addition as well! (more…)
