骰界 | THE DICERS

Six players gather at the arena to play a series of games. These games involve strategy, deduction and psychological warfare. The participants aim to collect as many dice as possible. Not only are the dice a form of currency as well as bragging rights, but they also allow the players to gain resources, advantages and perhaps even the ultimate prize.

I saw previews for this show during the HK trip and was intrigued by the premise + cast, so tuned in to the first 2 eps and then watched the rest as the eps were uploaded onto YouTube.

Unless the rights ever get sold to HK, THE DICERS, imo, is currently the closest HK has come to TASKMASTER:

celebs competing against each other (and occasionally teaming up) & playing games

similar range of temperaments/personalities: smart/highly competent (with the occasional massive fail), chaotic (at least 2 different types of chaos), in the middle/quietly competent, so bad/unlucky it's unbelievable, etc etc

there's prizes* for the winner(s) of each round (11 rounds in total, 15 eps)

there's opportunities for loopholes, leading to the production team closing said loopholes lol

an Alex figure, who's the host

each round has a unique aesthetic, with the cast dressing up to fit the setting

Key differences:

it's talking heads + narration (from the host), rather than a panel show format with a studio audience

it's 6 celebs, not 5, so the teaming up is 3 v 3, or 2 v 2 v 2, which reminds me of people theorising what TM would/could be like if there were 6 on the panel

there's technically no Greg figure throughout the show - at least, no figure for the celebs to "answer" or play up to (but in an interesting twist in the last round: the Alex becomes the Greg!)

I had a great time watching THE DICERS - some of the rounds, admittedly, were difficult to understand (lol), but it was well thought out & planned, and the cast was FUN!!

Definitely not saying it's exactly like TM since it's a straight-forward game show/competition, but seeing some of the similarities made me think of TM, which added to the enjoyment :)

Hope there's an s2 (with the same cast)!

*there's cool gifts/cash/joke gifts as prizes, but the main prize is an "energy dice" - there's 7 to be won (as shown in gifs 4 + 5) and each has a different power - for example, the white one is the "Cancellation Dice"**, which allows the Dicer to cancel out any energy dice that another Dicer uses in the same round

**the names of the energy dice are wordplay: Cancellation Dice is called "無骰": 無 = no/none and 骰 = dice; 骰 is also a homophone for 色 = colour, so the name can also be understood as "無色" = no colour

A Judo Player Becomes A Webtoon Producer | 'Today's Webtoon' Review

There are so many ways to relieve your stress. Some like to watch funny movies whereas some likes to play games. The same goes for a long long walk and some go to the gym. Nowadays there is kdrama therapy which so many people prefer to use. Ma Eum used to read webtoons whenever she was stressed. She started to take interest in comics when she was going through a lowest phase of her life. Once a judo player she decided to work as a webtoon producer. At the time of the interview, she meets Joon Young who himself is coping with loneliness. He's smart but 'minding their own business' type of guy. Both of them shares completely different perspectives which makes Ma Eum attractive to him. Without him knowing he starts to like her.

Today's Webtoon revolves around webtoon. It's all about

1. How Webtoon Artist and Webtoon Producer's relation works.

2. The problems both have to face.

3. Not just this but how life works.

I want to tell that this drama got an amazing cast. It's not just about main leads but it have some amazing characters like more than main leads I became attached to them!!! One of my most favorite is Shin Dae Ryuk he got his personality development but maybe there will be people like me who will not find his past story much trustable.

Now talking about main leads I feel so happy to tell you that I can't seem to decide who was the actual main lead. Like till episode 12 I wasn't much sure myself. Even though there were so many little hints towards Ma Eum's actual lover/partner, whatever you say. But yes it was frustrating not knowing and I was constantly praying ( Please Let Her Choose Him, Yeah he's so good for her, they're look so good together, they are so good together.) and literally they share some amazing chemistry that I was dying for them to be together but after all the confession and the way drama ended it was kind of open ending of their story. (No, I'm not crying at all hehehe).

Ma Eum is being a bubbly girl she's smiling all the time. She try to give her 200% in everything she does. Joon Young have some past breakdown which you get to understand little by little. He's so closed off and complete opposite of Ma Eum but once he got to know her he starts to feel way more things. In short he becomes much more friendlier. Their sunbae Seok Ji Hyeong is there to guide them. Sometimes he directly tell them what they should do but time to time he indirectly gives them hints about how things should be done.

There are several quotes from some of the most popular comics which works in motivating our characters. 'Popular Comics' not just include Webtoon but Mangas also.

Till Epsiode 12 everything is so jolly obviously because there's not much angst but after episode 12 there were scenes which made me feel pain. But there are also scenes throughout the drama which gave me butterflies. One thing to be clear there's a almost no romance but it's worth to watch cause the main leads share some extraordinary chemistry that even though they didn't shared the romantic feelings for a long long time, they do develop a nice and good friendship which made me believed that for Joon Young MaEum is his best friend and its good to watch. Because you know what they say 'You Will Fall In Love Many Times In Your Life. But The Best One Will Be Falling in Love With Your Best Friend.
