VLCD - day 1
Iāve had it with my weight gain. This isnāt my body type and Iām not comfortable in this body. Depression started affecting my ability to exercise about five years ago and Iāve gained a solid 10kg (22 pounds) per year along with an unhealthy relationship with food. Iāve tried going back to my old habits now, but my system needs a reset for anything to work again.
So thanks to my therapistās recommendation and my doctorās permission, I bought myself some meal replacement shakes and today is my first day of VLCD, very low calorie diet, also known somewhat accurately as the āstarvation dietā. I have a good plan to get enough vitamins, minerals and liquids to avoid any complications, and for someone like me with a BMI of 41, losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time isnāt life-threatening at all. Not having my days revolve around food and always thinking about the next meal will definitely help me bounce back from this gutter Iāve been stuck in.
The first day has passed smoothly. The shakes taste pretty much like your average protein and fiber powder so theyāre a bit hard to swallow, but I do actually lose my hunger for some time after having one so itās encouraging. I made this handy sheet for body measurements where I can track my progress over the coming weeks. Iām also considering taking pictures of myself before anything starts to happen, but Iāll see if Iām comfortable enough to do that.
Wish me luck!
Study reveals how a very low calorie diet can reverse type 2 diabetesĀ
The research team investigated the effects of a very low calorie diet (VLCD), consisting of one-quarter the normal intake, on a rodent model of type 2 diabetes. Using a novel stable (naturally occurring) isotope approach, which they developed, the researchers tracked and calculated a number of metabolic processes that contribute to the increased glucose production by the liver. The method, known as PINTA, allowed the investigators to perform a comprehensive set of analyses of key metabolic fluxes within the liver that might contribute to insulin resistance and increased rates of glucose production by the liver ā two key processes that cause increased blood-sugar concentrations in diabetes.
Using this approach the researchers pinpointed three major mechanisms responsible for the VLCDās dramatic effect of rapidly lowering blood glucose concentrations in the diabetic animals. In the liver, the VLCD lowers glucose production by: 1) decreasing the conversion of lactate and amino acids into glucose; 2) decreasing the rate of liver glycogen conversion to glucose; and 3) decreasing fat content, which in turn improves the liverās response to insulin. These positive effects of the VLCD were observed in just three days.
āUsing this approach to comprehensively interrogate liver carbohydrate and fat metabolism, we showed that it is a combination of three mechanisms that is responsible for the rapid reverssal of hyperglycemia following a very low calorie diet,ā said senior author Gerald I. Shulman, M.D., the George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine and Cellular and Molecular Physiology and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Respawn (~185 lbs)
Alright. So today is day 1 of my respawn. I havenāt been on optifast in any way shape or form since July. I havenāt really stuck to a diet or exercise plan for over a couple weeks in the past 6-7 months. And, honestly, Iām good with that.
It sucks, sure, but thankfully Iāve only put on an additional 10-15 lbs. If you consider how happy Iāve been (usually that makes me eat more. Love = weight gain for me), and how often Iāve indulged in whatever my tummy desires, youād see that 10-15 lbs as a total win. I do. I got my head and my heart right.
But Iām jumping back into my VLCD and Iām grateful to continue my journey after a seemingly brief layover. Will 2017 be the year I reach my weight loss goal? I hope so.Ā
