Power pop isn't really that easy to do well. When it IS done well, you can feel it in your brain - the melodies (pop) and the drive (power) combine to create a kind of dopamine for my brain. Bands like The Grip Weeds, The Toms, Gentleman Jesse, and Warm Soda (Matthew Melton) all come to mind when listening to Freezing Hands.

In Tuscon, Arizona, the legend of power pop begins with Matt Rendon (The Resonars, The Butterscotch Cathedral, among many more bands). The Freezing Hands are still active, having released a 7" last year. "It Was A Good Run" is in it's second pressing. It's glorious and sounds like it could have belonged on Numero's great "Titan: It's All Pop" box set.

This was originally released in 2022 on Dateland Records, which looks like a label that was created to put out Freezing Hands' music.

The other day as a friend of mine and I were driving up to Chico and listening to The Wind-Ups she said, "What's going on with Billy Tibbals?" Fair question. Living in Northern California, it's hard to keep tabs on young Tibbals.

But the other day, while perusing Bandcamp, I came across this 7" from a Bay Area band named Dancer (not the Glasgow band) who immediately made me think of the kind of music Billy Tibbals has been crafting for the past few years.

Dancer were active in the early 2010s to the early 2020s. They only released 7"s. I immediately also thought of Warm Soda/Matthew Melton. One member of Dancer (Omar Hernandez) was also in Bare Wires with Melton. He was also in Apache with R.E. Seraphin. So there is some quality power pop DNA in Dancer.

This 7" was released on Guitars and Bongos Records. We previously mentioned this label back in 2015 when they released Charlie Megira's "Love Police". The Bandcamp page for this release mentions bands/musicians such as Elvis Costello, The Jam, The Ramones, The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, and The Heartbreakers. Apparently, the last song is a cover of J.D. Buhl and The Believers.

Jiffy Marx (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) have a new 7″ available on Denver, Colorado label Snappy Little Numbers.  Both songs recall some of the power pop of Big Star, The Raspberries and even Cheap Trick.

I enjoyed this so much, I went back and listened to Gentleman Jesse and then Warm Soda (which I hadn’t listened to in years).  There’s something about 70s inspired power rock.

Maybe I’m crazy, but we should all know Warm Soda. They create catchy hooky wonderful power pop. They should be beloved.
