they can only digest biogenic things. as for artificial parts, they can be stored in their bodies.

although, as seen in the fight between Santana and Joseph, the only way any sort of metal or artificial objects to enter and stay in a pillar mens body is either by entering through the mouth, shot though the body(Santana and bullets, Kars absorbing Strohiems bullet frenzy), or sliced into(the knife holding Santanas hands together).

but to remove the object or objects, it will need abit of a push to do so; such as Santana focusing on a single small point in his body to fire the bullets, using enough force to fire them out with the same force of a gun. Or they simply ooze their way out through their stomach after ingested(this goes for bigger objects).

in conclusion: it’s like most humans eating meat and disregarding the bone.
