The basement light keeps flickering.
It’s not the overhead light or anything super noticeable, it’s this little lamp he has from when he was growing up. He thought it was just that it was old, so on the weekend he rewired it and got a new lightbulb. It still flickered. It wasn’t terribly bad, it’s annoying at best.
The kids got all shifty about it a couple days ago, when he asked what was going on Mike said he couldn’t possibly understand in that “you’re too stupid to know” tone most of the family took up with him, and Nancy said it was nothing important so he didn’t need to worry in the quick “don’t ask me again” tone she’d learned from Karen.
So he didn’t ask again, and when Karen asked where the kids went he shrugged and said they barely live here anymore anyways so her guess was as good as his before Holly dragged him outside asking for him to help her set up a tent.
It felt like one thing after another these days, between the town splitting into four, the Byers moving in, and the chaos that is the family trying to get along during the summer in the middle of a lockdown- it felt overwhelming.
And then that stupid light won’t stop flickering.
It’s 10:45pm on a Wednesday night and instead of sleeping he’s standing in the basement staring at the flickering. He’s got to be going crazy because it almost seems like it’s flickering S-O-S, and it’s giving him memories of a time he does not want to be thinking about.
Karen got heated with him again. He said something out of turn, not entirely sure what it was, but whatever it was it was enough to set her off which wasn’t too hard to start with considering she was wine drunk by 3:45 this afternoon. What stopped the fight wasn’t even him walking away or saying something or anything. “God I wish I’d just gone-“ she caught herself, looked like she was about to throw up and then walked away.
He’s not the smartest person in the room- he’s reminded of that often- but he didn’t need to be to pick up what she was saying.
Anyway it’s 10:55pm now, and there it goes still; S-O-S. “I’m losing it-“ he was cut off by the sound of knocking on the front door. Did Jonathan get locked out again? Kid thought he was slick by doing weed outside but he fails to realize he smells like green the second he steps in. He’s not his kid so that is up to Joyce to handle, and it’s not like he doesn’t pop pills to keep the voices at bay in his mind so who is he to judge?
“Coming Jon,” he muttered out loud before going up the stairs and opening the door to find- “Steve?” The boy looked as shocked as Ted felt to see him there but pulled his act together fast, “oh Hi Mr. Wheeler I um- well I kinda expected Nance or Jonathan or someone to be up…” “it’s 11 in the night, they’re not awake. Haven’t been for a few hours.” Steve rubbed the back of his neck chuckling softly, “yeah that um, yep makes sense. I’m gonna go ahead and leave nice seeing you…” he was turning around to walk away and even if Ted did want to stop him and ask him what was going on he figured he’d be told he doesn’t understand so he refrained.
Except this was Steve, and he knew this kid pretty well, and between Steve and Will they were the only two of his kids friends he ever asked anything for considering they always answered. “Steve wait- is everything ok, kid?” The boy stopped, turning around to look at the man in his doorway. He could see in the boys big brown eyes he was thinking a thousand things before his eyes flickered to the window where the basement was.

“What I’m gonna say is going to sound insane.” Steve started before looking back up to Ted, “and I need you to swear to me that once you hear you will either go to bed and forget about it or tell Nance to come down so I can have some help.” Ted leaned on the doorframe, crossing his arms, “or I can help you, does it have to do with my lamp flickering S-O-S every night?”
Steve looked like he had cold water thrown at him but he nodded, before stepping closer, “if I tell you this, you’re going to have to get cool with a lot of stuff really quick starting with Eddie Munson.”
Munson. That poor kid. If only Al-

I just had an idea!
A Hanahaki disease fanfic in which Mike develops Hanahaki because of his feelings for Will, but he refuses to admit it due to his internalized homophobia.
The Party finds out and tries to convince Mike to confess his feelings in order to survive the disease, but Mike continues to deny it.
At one point, Dustin mentions the surgery that exists to remove the flowers from the lungs, but he reveals that by doing so the patient will lose their feelings for that person, and in a large number of cases the ability to feel love for anyone will be severely affected.
Eventually, the disease affects Mike so noticeably that it becomes impossible to hide it from his family. In the end, Mike decides to confess his feelings, because the idea of no longer being able to feel love for Will terrifies him even more.
(It is revealed at some point that the reason Ted Wheeler is so apathetic toward almost everything is because, as a teenager, he also developed Hanahaki, but he never confessed his feelings and instead his parents forced him to undergo the surgery.)
