I'm planning out a Shino-twin-sister OC, and I was wondering how tied to his elemental affinities I need to be? I want her to use Wind Chakra for weapons (kama and kusarigama). Should I start with Fire/Earth, or would starting with Wind be okay? Or could she skip training her affinity and work first on Wind?

Woah, stop right there.

If you have an end goal in mind, either go towards that or change it, no half-hearting the journey.

You want her to have wind-based taijutsu tricks? make her have a wind affinity. doesn’t matter if it’s rare. It exists, you want it done, bam it will be done. simply make a note: no one in the Aburame clan has had wind chakra in generations, something like that.

Never write someone that skips training their strengths to focus on a mere want. The thought process of your character should be: i have x affinity, and y weapon works well with that. I’ll go with y weapon as my main and pour my time into x and y!

Never: I want to use y weapon. x affinity goes well with y weapon and I can use it, but z is my actual affinity. because I want to use y weapon, I will train x instead of z because I want to.

It’s illogical and a waste of energy. Stick to what you’ve planned. it’s not a mary-sue if you have proper justification and context, don’t worry.

Something everyone needs to understand about the Chakra Natures

水遁, Suiton; The manipulation of water. Shinobi can draw water from a source and change it's shape and form, even atmospheric water vapour.

火遁, Katon; A Shinobi can super heat their chakra and expell it. It can be manipulated and moulded, but fire is just a reaction a sudden burst of energy that then dissipates.

風遁, Fūton; By flattening their chakra a Shinobi can manipulate air particles in such a way it can be used offensively and defensively. 

土遁, Doton; Densifying their chakra to the point it becomes solid a Shinobi can create and manipulate earth. 

雷遁,Raiton; To create and manipulate lightning Shinobi increase the frequency of their chakra, which can then be given form.

木遁, Mokuton; Wood release is different. Sure the other Chakra forms can create their own substances, but lighting and earth are not life. Hashirama utilises wood and trees around him, but he could also create! These trees were not false. They grew into forests and created new life for other animals and people. His chakra wasn't changed and manipulated into a form. It is Life. He is life.
