Withdrawn Triad.
9s
Isolation and Mistyping
A question came up recently about the notion of isolation in the types. A feeling of separateness and focus on personal uniqueness/social deviance is often attributed to types such as 4 and 5 a bit excessively. In reality, the vast majority of people see themselves as individual and separate from others and can fixate on this in both positive and negative fashion. 9, 6, and 3 are especially inclined towards this, but for 9 it becomes at times more difficult to distinguish because of the fact that they are also part of the withdrawn triad. This leads the majority of 9s, especially those who have faced social isolation or any form of rejection, to mistype as 4 or 5.
9 is a type that goes back and forth between the desire for autonomy/"that place where they can just exist and be" that comes with being a withdrawn gut type and the desire to connect and align that comes with being an attachment type (which, due to how that sort of desire is interpreted culturally, is typically not recognized consciously as much). As much as 9 in the withdrawn sense wants to be separated, unaffected, and and that option to be alone, they rarely want to be fully and truly isolated or disconnected. Part of why 9 falls asleep is because it is trying to get both of these things and the methods that they use disconnects them from reality, putting them asleep to their life. When 9s do get into the position where they are consistently rejected or actually isolated, they do tend to fixate on it and are often really not super happy with that because there is an unconscious desire to have some form of connection in the attachment sense. 9 doesn't constantly want to deal with the resistance that that causes or loose the access to the things they want that comes with having that isolation, so they can really fixate on that feeling of isolation and segregation from society when it happens. There can in general focus on areas where they are segregated from that they want access to. And they can align with the segregated image as well, kind of like the concept of the cp6 does where it seems to be pushing away or taking pride in that segregation. They can even be consciously very prideful of this. But that alignment is still very 9, attachment, and common among 9s in isolated positions
5 and 4 are a bit different in that there's this arrogance instead. 4, regardless of whether or not it actually has anything irl that is pushing it away or genuine isolation specifically is trying to be segregated. There's the "oh woe is me" that comes with the 4 that may whine about being misunderstood, but their whole self conception is shrouded in that they are deep and inaccessible and that the external is at fault for being too shallow. 4 takes a certain pride in being disturbing or off-skew and even when they are not will push to be or to find depth in a world that seemingly doesn't have it. Don't get me wrong, 4s probably seek connection as well in a fantastical sense but it's with like depth or an abstracted landscape of people who give them or connect them with depth. 5 thinks people are not capable of seeing and investigating what they can, problems isolation would come from that. They are autonomy seeking and reject influence of any kind. The 5 sentiment when yearning for connection is this desire to be understood, this desire for others to see and to be aware and to have that mutual understanding if anything. They are not looking to connect or be part of things and automatically view themselves as separate and uninfluenced so it's less of a fixation, more of a "why aren't they seeing that?"
Enneagrammatic Alchemical Symbols
Upon reading this write-up made by RafflesiaArnoldii (kendrixtermina) I was inspired to symbolically represent the Enneagram types in an alchemy-esque manner.
Centres of Intelligence & Underlying Fixations
Gut / Impulsive → Anger
Heart / Emotional → Shame
Head / Mental → Dread
Either fixation can manifest in a three-fold manner:
Exteriorised { anger / shame / dread }
Centralised { anger / shame / dread }
Interiorised { anger / shame / dread }
Note. In hindsight, my symbols for 3 centres of intelligence are akin to how 4 congitive functions are represented in Socionics (〇 for sensation, △ for intuition, □ for thinking/logic, ∟ for feeling/ethics).
Object Relation Triads
Rejection / Transactionalist / Relationist → “Sulphuric”
Attachment / Pragmatist / Adaptive → “Saline”
Frustration / Idealist / Utopian → “Mercurial”
Hornevian Triads
Assertive / Aggressive → “Idic”
Withdrawn → “Egoic”
Dutiful / Compliant → “Super-Egoic”
Note. This is based on the theory of scrambling of centres. In hexad types (1/4/7 & 2/5/8), the secondary centre is in service of the primary, whilst the tertiary is (mostly) taken out of the picture; in triangle types (3/6/9), it’s their primary centre that is walled off from the secondary & tertiary centres.
Harmonic Triads
Positive Outlook / Reframing → “Sublimating”
Competency / Procedural → “Dissolving”
Reactivity / Expressing → “Præcipitating”
Note. Out of the multitude of alchemical processes to represent the harmoning triads I have chosen the following three: sublimation, dissolution, & præcipitation. This was done on the basis of their metaphorical meanings that are in common usage but which have been ultimately derived from their respective primary (al)chemical significations.
to sublimate (← Latin sublīmō “to raise, elevate”)
(alchemy & chemistry) to change directly from the solid to the vapour state without passing through the liquid state
(psychology) to divert the expression of (an instinctual desire or impulse) from its unacceptable base or primitive form to one that is considered more positive or socially or culturally acceptable
Types 2/7/9 cope with an adverse situation by shifting away from it, reframing it into sth positive, habitually searching for silver linings, &c. Thus, they sublimate.
to præcipitate (← Latin præcipitō “throw down, hurl down, throw headlong”)
(alchemy & chemistry) to cause vapour to condense and fall or deposit; to separate a substance out of a liquid solution or suspension into solid form
(common usage) to bring about a certain condition, especially abruptly, sudddenly, and quickly; to fall headlong or act with violent or unwise speed
Types 4/6/8 have an immediate, intense, flaring response or even an outburst to an adverse situation. Thus, they præcipitate.
to dissolve (← Latin dissolvō “to loosen up, break apart”)
(alchemy & chemistry) to disintegrate into a solution by immersion into a liquid or gas
(obsolete usage) to solve; to resolve; to clear up
Types 1/3/5 tend to cope by finding rational, logical solutions. Verbs solve, dissolve, & resolve share the same root. The image that comes to mind is this: analysing the situation at hand (i.e., dissolution) and coming up with the most suitable course of action to deal therewith (i.e., (re)solution).
Constructing an overall symbol (ligature) for each Enneagram type
It is possible to construct a cumulative symbol for each type by combining their respective triadic glyphs into one ligature.
Thus, the Hornevian Triad glyphs for each type would become the base to which the rest of the glyphs would be adjoined.
Then, for hexad types, one would append the respective Object Relation Triad glyph (sulphur for 2/5/8 or mercury for 1/4/7) on top of the base; for triangle types, the salt glyph (for 3/6/9) would instead go underneath.
As for the respective Harmonic Triad glyphs, those would go below everything: the dissolution glyph (for 1/3/5) would be inverted for the purposes of visual congruity; the glyphs for sublimation (for 2/7/9) & præcipation (for 4/6/8) would be used as they are.
Instinctual variants
It is also possible to represent the dominant instinct by adding one of the following to the overall symbol for any Enneagram type:
[ * ] Self-preservation instinct
[ ** ] Sexual instinct
[ *** ] Social instinct
Note. These can be either asterisks or small dots and can be added onto any side of the main symbol. To represent all of the instincts from the dominant to the blind-spot, one can simply stack the asterisks or dots on top of each other accordingly.
could you describe how is that emptiness sx blind feel? and how does it manifest in you everyday life? (I know its hard to describe something so abstract but its just hard to image how someone can feel empty) thanks in advance!
I mean…it is kinda hard to explain? I think it’s because my tritype is the whole withdrawn triad AND I’m sx-blind that I feel the Void™ so strongly. Bc you know 5 is the void of the mind, 9 is the void of the body, 4 is the void of emotion. It’s like…if my gut isn’t a pit of anxiety it feels like nothing. I’m just missing something and I can’t put my finger on what exactly it is (I’m assuming it’s sx that I’m missing but idk)
I’ve always attributed this to my inferior Se, but I don’t really feel connected to my body. Other than taking care of its basic needs and avoiding death, I feel no particular attachment. My soul is me, but my body isn’t me, ya know? It’s not as severe of a detachment as I’m probably making it sound like it is, but it’s normal for me to think of myself that way. So I guess that also contributes to a feeling of emptiness since I don’t feel grounded to the world
I’m just floating through life. I generally connect to people or things I like kind of loosely bc I feel like I lack existence in a tangible way. It’s not that I’m miserable 24/7, but I feel a sense of emptiness bc I know that a lot of these things I do to fill the void are only temporary and won’t actually make me feel any more connected to anything. It sounds depressing, but even if it does make me feel sad sometimes, I accept it and don’t think it has to mean I live a sad life. Plenty of people feel empty, but they only live sad lives if they let that stop them from trying to find something valuable to them.
(the anon from before) I have actually typed up all the ennea-odyssey relations since imo the examples were mostly very helpful for understanding types I didn't understand before but I'm a little scared to post them bcs of copyrights OTL I'm also a ni-dom with the same tritype but with 4 as core but yeah... having all withdrawn ones is weird. also makes it hard to figure out variants imo :/
oh yeah, I mean copyright is super confusing on tumblr where leaked videos/material and illegal transcripts are probably everywhere so I can see your hesitation. It’s better to be safe than sorry, although I think linking/citing your source(s) may help
I relate, instinctual variants were definitely difficult. I knew I was an sp-dom immediately but whenever someone came up with explanations of all the subtypes I either related to neither or both of the sp/so or sp/sx descriptions. It doesn’t help that a lot of people interested in personality systems also happen to be so-blind, which they do a decent job of explaining, but since it’s in their blind spot they can’t help but being biased or misunderstanding soc sometimes, just as a lot of sx-blinds have a concept of sx but really don’t get sx.
The amount of people that I see imo mistyped as so-blinds bc they don’t understand soc is astounding, especially considering that sx is the most common blind spot. Since those people actually have soc, they are uncomfortable of the idea of being one of the “shallow” sx-blinds since they think it ruins their chances of being liked or understood in the heavily so-blind typology communities they come across. In fact, a lot of sx-blinds in general don’t speak up enough to explain themselves bc they are concerned about rocking the community boat or whatever, which imo is a bad idea since people are always discussing and arguing anyway and it shouldn’t really matter
Having all of the withdrawn triad means you have a lot of trouble figuring out whether the things you are compelled to do are related to sp, sx, both, or neither. As a 5 core, my insatiable need for resources and complete knowledge of certain topics often for their own sake was really confusing, bc they can tie to sp or sx or Ni or Ti. I don’t like having too many friends and only a few people earn my need to be truly liked, so is that sx choosiness, sp security, or just me being introverted?
And then you top it off with 4, who wants to be true to itself, and dom-Ni, which likes things to be final and stable, and now you’re super confused because you have confliction inside of you that you want to weed out as soon as possible
Sorry for blabbing lol but I hope the point of here was this: rip any variation of the 459 tritype, your instinctual variants suck to pin down especially when you’re an Ni-dom, since everything screams sp/sx superficially but is definitely not always sx
