i miss ignorance. when i kid, i used to write a bunch of crap and i didn't care i write a bunch of crap, cuz i just wanted to write, so fuck it, i would and nothing else mattered. but these days? fucking hell. i look at my writing, regardless of which language, and it simply doesn't feel good enough somehow. and im not even worried about who's gonna read or not cuz i don't even think im that relevant, and that doesn't matter, or should cuz it's not the reason why i do it, but it'd be so nice if i could just write without thinking like i used to do when i was a kid. where's that ignorance? cuz i need that back. couldn't i be a critic with a healthy view? christ in hell. w h y
I apologize for this random, vent-y post but if you write whump for coping reason I would like to hear your thoughts or really anyone’s thoughts if they write whump.
I started writing whump and making whump characters as a way to process some stuff in my life, I won’t go into details. The situation has basically subsided/I’ve been feeling better about it all etc. But like ik that Sera and the Our Angel story is like only a thing because of this situation. And like I want to continue to write as use Our Angel as Botha creative outlet and a way to process other stuff in my life but I feel like really guilty ig for like having the entire characters and story solely based off a specific situation and now that it’s not like as big of a deal that I just continue if that makes sense.
Idk I’ve been feeling very off recently in general not pertaining to this situation so maybe my mind is just trying to find something to overthink and bother me idk.
I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts. Ik I’m probably just being stupid but I just idk need some reassurance </3
Something I don't talk about much is how audiences interpret hyper intelligence in a character and almost always default to autism. And that is something that I really hate in fan interpretations. Of course anyone can headcanon what they want, I'm not here to police that. But the assumption that hyper intelligent characters MUST be autistic is actually another harmful stereotype of autism, that of the Autistic Savant.
I wish we could have more discussions about how hyper intelligence or just highly intelligent characters are alienated from society in a completely different way than someone who is autistic.
The conflation of high intelligence and autism often correlates a sociopathic lack of empathy to both groups, like you cannot just be a highly intelligent rude person who is otherwise neurotypical. Meanwhile you apparently can't be autistic without being scathingly rude and having no regard for the people in your life.
Which actually circles around to the implication that neurotypical people are plain, boring, and unable to be unique/quirky/weird or intelligent while neurodivergent people must all be superior in intellect but ghastly to be around.
So the stereotype is if you are intelligent and stand out, you must be neurodivergent. And if you are intelligent you must be autistic. Even when the character clearly shows an extremely high ability to understand and manipulate social cues and interactions while defaulting every background character to neurotypical punching bags.
Again, headcanon whatever you like. This isn't a policing post. I just wish we saw more diversity in how we approach characters and didn't default to stereotypes.
One thing I've noticed lately in some of my ao3 readers is that their views on certain Star Wars fics of mine are very different from what I ever expected. I'm paraphrasing some of their comments below:
"Hey, when you write about these characters or events, are you gonna include [unrelated side characters] or [parallel canon event] as well?"
"Whoa, you ship X and Z? But X and Y are canon! That makes no sense!!"
"Why is X doing things this way? Why wouldn't they do Such-and-Such in these 5 steps to resolve the conflict?"
My general response has been:
"Because this is how I'm telling the story. Don't like? Don't read. Feel free to brainstorm and write your own version on here, thanks!"
I'm starting to think that a) I'm getting far younger readers unused to fan etiquette, and b) some readers are really too insecure about their own passions to attempt writing such a fic themselves. I mean, look, I've wriiten the Wardfield Life is Strange fics and Jaina Solo x Tenel Ka SW Legends fics I wanted so badly to read myself! And I loved it!
Go forth and do likewise!
Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.
I was your star,
as you were my moon.
Always there,
but never near.
And though part of me
will always search the night for you,
I hope one day
I stop looking to the sky for light.
I hope one day
I become the sun
