When Yuna visits her boys at practice one day, diaper bag hanging off one arm and her granddaughter squirming restlessly in the other, she sees that the music is contagious. More importantly, she sees how many people love and appreciate Shane.
âMama Hollander!â Bood is the first to notice her. âAnd baby Hollanov!â
âHi,â the toddler pipes up. She all smiles and bouncing, curly pigtails as more of the Centaurs skate by. âWhere Dada?â
Boodâs laughter echoes all the way to the private seating. He points across the ice with his stick. âHeâs right over there, baby girl. Want me to go get him?â
Yuna doesnât have to look up to know the singing just beyond the boards is coming from Shane. Sheâs had years to get used to itâto come to love it. Sheâd know that voice anywhere.
Itâs the others that she didnât count on.
âDefense open on one side,â Shane sings to himself softly. His eyes are laser-focused on the little dry erase board Ilyaâs examining with just as much intensity. âGoalie unaware and unprotected. Whoâs open on the ice?â
Behind them are Haas, Barrett, LaPointe, and Dykstra, with Hayes on the other end of the ice in the crease. They canât see the board their captainâs holding, but they can hear the song being written as a play comes together. And Yuna can only tell they can hear because theyâre humming along.
Is this what the world sounds like to Shane?
Sheâs asking herself a million questions as the humming harmonizes. Itâs not just synced with the music her son makes; itâs moving and evolving along with it.
The Centaurs are blending notes together into something beautiful. Wyatt takes a low note, Troy takes a high note. Luca and Eric are hitting something that makes Yuna think they couldâve been tenors in a choir. Ilyaâs mouthing the words with Shane, like he knows the lyrics as theyâre being written. All of it echoes off the ice just so, and it hits a part of her brain just right.
Is this why Shane sings? Because of the tingle down his spine when it sounds like this?
Nobody can hear whatâs in Shaneâs head. Nobody knows where the music comes from. But here these men are, playing a symphony like theyâve rehearsed it a hundred times. And itâs impossible to tell if the Centaurs have been doing this individually their whole lives, if Shaneâs music is actually contagious, or if his way of seeing the world was just adopted by a group of good men who realize that their friend and colleague might be on to something. Whatever the case, Yuna can see the way Shane lights up when the answer seems to materialize out of nowhere, pulled out of thin air and music notes.
âDykstra!â He exclaims excitedly, pointing to a blue X on the board. âIf Iâm on the rightââ
âYouâre a genius,â Ilya interjects as he scribbles on the sides in red. âAbsolutely brilliant, sweetheart. Your brain amazes me. Boys! Run it again! Pass to Dykstra!â
âAht aht!â Bood waves his arms excitedly as he cuts across the defense formation. âBaby break first!â
On cue, the toddler in Yunaâs arms squeals excitedly. âHi Papa! Hi Dada!â
Ilya takes off across the ice first, with a smile so big Yuna swears it must hurt. Shaneâs right behind him, waving a gloved hand at their baby girl.
He stops short, though, when he notices tears in Yunaâs eyes.
âMom,â he gasps. âMom, whatâs wrong?â
âNothing, nothing!â She wipes her eyes with her free hand and passes the uncontrollably happy toddler off to Ilya. âJustâŠâ
In the background, the rest of the Centaurs are passing the puck back and forthâgentlyâto entertain the baby. Theyâre humming the same tune from before.
Yuna smiles. âI see why you love it here.â
