Final dialogue in the show for comparison:

“Please. NO. DON’T. STOP being an asshole! You always try to get yourself killed and I can’t let it happen again! Stop being so selfish please if you go on there you’re gonna die and I can’t deal with it again. You can’t die cause I can’t deal with it again. Don’t let it happen again. Please. Please don’t let it happen again. Not you. I’m sorry.”

This is so far the only excerpt I can find of the ladder scene. But goddamn is this bit tragic nonetheless.

I’m not sure if there’s more to Dustin’s dialogue that was cut off but it’s shorter than the version we got and there’s no alluding to what happened to Eddie in this one (“You can’t die cause I can’t deal with it again.”)

The OG script version reminds me more that Dustin is just a kid. The constant repeating of “you can’t die” does it for me. It’s also more frantic and disorganized. Like I can vividly imagine Dustin having a panic attack with this dialogue.

There is still repeating in the final version but the emphasis is more on preventing another tragedy and really hammering home that Eddie’s death and Dustin’s fear of a similar scenario occurring again was the cause for Steve and Dustin’s rift. (“You can’t die cause I can’t deal with it again”/“Don’t let it happen again.”) Overall I think it does a better job on connecting it to the argument in the rainbow room and so the added “I’m sorry” makes sense (then again I have no idea if the rainbow room fight is different in the script I would love to see that).

Since the primary focus in the script version was Steve and not how Eddie’s death impacted Dustin, (“you can’t die” being repeated over and over directed to Steve) I think adding the “Not you” in the final version makes sense to bring it back to Steve like in the og version and how no matter what Dustin just can’t bear the thought of Steve dying.

There’s also a lot to be said about how in the dialogue Gaten improvised, it acknowledges Dustin’s fear isn’t unfounded. Steve always throws himself into dangerous situations to protect others. Eddie just proved that that could’ve easily been Steve any other time. It adds a lot as to why Dustin has so much misplaced anger at Steve.

I was taking a peek at the tags on “Doomsday is Close at Hand” and I was curious about a few things if you feel like sharing!

Why did you choose to make it modern? Is the time period integral to the plot or more a fun setting?

Ooh, you have Steve and Dustin as half-siblings! Does their blood connection make a big difference or is it a cause of even greater anxiety about their relationship?

It is inspired by a Good Girl’s Guide to murder?! Can you give any more details about in which way or is that too spoilery?

Hihihi yes I can!! I’ve got to finish up planning the plot since it’s a murder mystery AND long fic (aka super heavy plot that need to be just right) but after that the prologue + first chapter will be coming out shortly

I chose to make it modern because a big way every day people are able to solve crimes are through modern technology. So being able to stalk through social media, have access to burner phones, be able to call each other, look at old messages, find information on the internet, etc. I was considering keeping it the same time period for the vibes but it’d be a lot harder for them to solve the crime and I lowkey don’t want to do more research then I have to lmao. It’ll hopefully still have the vibes by still being a small town

Steve and Dustin being half siblings were another thing I was mixed on since one of the charms of their relationship is the found family but it helps me out because 1) yes I want an excuse for them to have more codependency and separation anxiety 2) Steve and Dustin really only met and started hanging out after dealing with the upside down together. Since there’s no supernatural in this it’d be a lot harder to get them to be as close and codependent as they are currently, especially considering this would take place around season 5 timeframe instead of season 2 because of eddies death (which is the main plot point of the story if you hadn’t gathered from the tags :))) and 3) it actually contributes to the plot in other ways I shall not reveal yet

Yes it is!! That’s how the idea came about!! It’s more loosely inspired by it rather than solely based on it. Basically what I can share without it spoiling much is (and this will be in the fic synopsis) one year ago from when the fic begins, Eddie allegedly killed Chrissy Cunningham, and then killed himself after. But Nancy- despite having no relationship with either of them- believes Eddie is innocent and instead of writing an article about the crime for the Hawkins post like she was supposed to, decides she’s going to prove he was innocent. Her first step towards that is getting the help of a 15 year old Dustin, who was friends with Eddie and one of the only people who openly believe he’s innocent. That’s about where the similarities between AGGTM and the fic end but that is your first look on what it’ll be about!!
