My absolute gospel truth and I'm sorry this is so sappy but--where I'm living, Ilya fully changes his name to Hollander when they get married, like just fully legally changes it. And despite the fact that he continues to use Rozanov professionally ("Just like J. Lo," Ilya says.) everyone who knows them personally obviously knows what Ilya's legal name is and also assume it's a way to kind of stick it to his shitheel father. To this end, and kind of as a joke at first, people start referring to their two-person unit as The Hollanders ("Okay, the Hollanders are in room 508" etc.) but it becomes steadily less and less a joke when neither Shane or Ilya really seems to think of it as one. Ilya especially seems to genuinely love it. He'll say shit like "Oh yes the Hollanders will be there" when asked if they're coming to a barbecue like they live in a postcard. He LOVES to give his name as Ilya Hollander and he LOVES to book reservations under 'Misters Hollander' and he LOVES to say the words 'Shane and Ilya Hollander' out loud with his mouth. I also think that for their last game together in the league Ilya and Shane wear jerseys that say S. Hollander 24 and I. Hollander 81 and it's like. An end of an era type thing. And they frame the jerseys.

i'll never be over the fact that hollanov are high school sweethearts. not enough people seem to realize that they met when they were 17. if they were normal high schoolers going to the same high school this would be their last/second-to-last year of high school. They started falling (and no you cannot argue with me) when they were fucking 18. And they kept falling. And they stayed together until their twenties and got married and adopted a dog and now they work together at their dream job. If they weren't pro hockey players completely surrounded by homophobia and toxic masculinity (more so than in normal everyday society) their love story would've been sweet and loving and the kind of inspirational shit you hear about online or from family members about "your uncle shane" or "your grandparents." hollanov is the couple ever and you'll never convince me otherwise.

People with ADHD mask, too. To seem less hyperactive, less offensive, less "other". Someone with ADHD needs to actively tone down their expressiveness, control their voice, and police every word they say to be more socially acceptable.

It's extremely draining and not every person with ADHD is able to uphold it for more than short periods of time. Some people are bad at it to beging with.

Hudson doesn't do that. He is exactly as weird, hyperactive, and borderline offensive as someone with ADHD, who does not police their every word naturally is. And that, sadly, often aggravates people who expect a certain, more conformist behavior

I'm not a gatekeeper so yall. the best thrift stores are the ones that look bad. do not go to cool trendy thrift stores with hot alt twenty-something employees. (I mean you can if you want but enjoy paying $40 for a fuckass shirt.)

here's what you actually want in a thrift store:

in a rich town

run by a church

staffed exclusively by little old ladies

most of the clothes will be butt ugly. but they will also be 1) good quality and 2) cheap af. the 70 year olds running the shop think a thrifted shirt should be $3 and they are correct. everyone else shopping there is over the age of 45 so you won't have to throat punch any depop resellers over a cunty little top. you will get hyped up by old ladies and if you frequent the same shop they may start trying to set you up with their grandkids. everyone wins and who knows their grandkids might be hot.

Can someone explain to me what depop resellers means? I'm feeling a little called out, but I don't use that website and I'm wondering if we're at a point where the fact that I sell thrifted things is like... demonized to this level? Like, yes, I buy shit at thrift stores and estate sales and I make money off it. Because my state doesn't pay enough for me to live off the job I went to school for over five years for. Am I at the point where I once again am somehow the problem? Am I to you guys somehow the bourgeoisie because my moderately weird, bad at normal stuff self went with the skillset I had and do my best to like... endeavor survive and save up enough wealth to be able to help those in my life when they need it?

I've recently learned that escaping enshitification is actually really easy. When I was younger I would use FOSS (free and open source software) because I usually couldn't afford anything else. Back then the paid options were usually significantly better than the unpaid options so when I finally got money I started using the paid stuff and completely forgot that Foss existed.

If you don't know why Foss is awesome its not just that its free. Open source software has a huge set of advantages. Most software is proprietary meaning that its code cannot be viewed by other people. Open source softwares code can be viewed by everyone and people can contribute their own code to make it better. Open source is often more secure than proprietary because more people have more eyes on it and more people have contributed to it's security. Its also easy to know how much privacy you have with every software because you can read the code. No more "trust me bro I'm not harvesting and selling your data" you know if they are collecting and selling because the code is publicly available.

In the last two months I have been switching almost completely to Foss. I was worried at first because when I stopped using Foss over 10 years ago the average Foss software was genuinely worse than the paid proprietary alternative. Thankfully things have really come full circle. 90℅ of the software I have tried in the last 2 months works better than the proprietary alternative and is 100℅ less obnoxious.

So here is a list of every Foss software I have tried and recommend. There is way more than this available. This list is just what I have used and like personally. Anyone can feel free to add and we can turn it into a master list. Please just take these as a place to start and do your own research to see if these softwares will work for your use case before you fully ditch your proprietary software.

Operating systems

Graphene os: android alt. Security and privacy focused. The most secure and private smartphone currently available.

Linux mint: easy to use linux, 100℅ better than windows.

Pop!: The Linux distro you should use if you have nividia hardware and want to play games using said hardware. Very intuitive and easy to use.

Kubuntu: Ubuntu Linux with KDE desktop. This is the linux distro one I am currently using and I don't have any plans to jump ship again. Better than windows and better than Mac. The companion app for your phone makes life soooo easy. Its pretty and easy to customize to a ridiculously granular level. No fucking notes.

Kindle jailbreak- ko reader: use jailbreak to free your kindle from the tyranny of the bezos. It will download ko reader which is a Foss OS that has every fucking feature you always wished kindle had and let's you read whatever the fuck you want, and have whatever the screensaver you want (no more ads!). Soooo fuck amazon and use this. I genuinely cannot recommend it enough.

Linux FOSS: (some available on windows and android as well)

Calibre: Foss desktop eBook library. Packed with features. You will want to use this with koreader to make managing your kindle easy.

Manuscript: skrivner alt. Does absolutely everything I need.

Bitwarden: password manager (use a keepass fork if you want self hosted)

Next cloud: private google drive and cloud alternative that you can self host if you want but it's not required. App available

Proton VPN: to the best of my knowledge it is the only Foss no log VPN you can get. You can pay for higher speeds. App available

Quad9dns: free encrypted DNS provider. App available.

News software:

Use any Foss RSS reader and for the love of god stop getting news from social media. Take control of your feed!

Apps (I only know for android)

Fdroid: great app store to find Foss android apps and download them.

Antennapod: you can get all of your podcasts fetched to one feature rich app via RSS feed. No need to rely on spotify or music steaming services.

Openreads: it's good reads but private and 100℅ stored locally. No amazon, no social media aspect, it just tracks your reading, you can import your good reads but if you want to import from storygraph you have to make a good reads burner account, import to good reads, then import to openreads. The menus Navigation on this one is a bit cumbersome but honestly good reads app is worse.

Newpipe: YouTube frontend that let's you have YouTube subscriptions, watch YouTube in the background, and blocks all ads, without logging in to YouTube. You will want to use this one with a VPN set to Canada (or any other country) so YouTube doesn't keep blocking it in order to force you to sign in. But even with that extra step its worth it for the privacy and the lack of ads.

Proton mail: one of 2 more private gmail alts. But you should note that email cannot be 100℅ anonymous or private.

I think that's it. There are still a lot software varieties I am slowly finding.

To add:

Blender is an amazing FOSS suite for 3D modeling and animation, as well as digital sculpting and motion tracking. Pros use it. It’s a staple in game development. It’s what the Academy Award winning film “Flow” was made on. It’s not the bland name alternative to an industry standard; it is an industry standard.

Krita is a fantastic FOSS application for digital painting. Everyone I’ve ever talked to who uses it has loved it to death.

OBS is the absolute go-to choice for screen recording and live streaming. You can use it to record your entire desktop or a specific window, capture audio from multiple sources, and even add overlays, webcam feeds, or transitions to your videos.

VLC Media Player is the best media player, hands down. It’s lightweight, it’s reliable, it supports virtually every audio and video format known to man, and it has built in media conversion and even basic editing. I truly can’t imagine why anyone would use a media player that isn’t this one. It’s just the best there is, easily, no contest.

Audacity is a fantastic multi-track audio editor and recorder. It’s free and it’s good, and podcasters love it for a reason.

And believe it or not, Thunderbird is a really good email client now. I’m not even joking. If you used it back in the day and hated it, please give it another chance, because the glow up is unreal.

sometimes i think about how troy is so much like shane. the same obsessiveness. hockey as the axis his whole life turns on, the food rituals, the precision of it & his health (salmon is a treat for him...). the same social unawareness, the awkwardness, the anxiety, the unblinking seriousness. the way he moves through the world slightly out of sync, like he’s still learning rules everyone else already knows. he’s like shane, just slightly to the left. shane, but if he were drowning. shane, but if he had all the same rocks in his pockets that ilya carried for years. the family or lack thereof, the secrecy, the loneliness, & the quiet, constant self-erasure.

so fucking of course it’s ilya who sees it immediately. he sees shane in him, and he sees himself, too—the version of himself that existed before shane loved him. and loving troy, helping him, feels almost like having a piece of hollander there. something steady and familiar in his hands, even when shane is weeks and cities away (and ilya is so secretly miserable he could scream). of fucking course ilya is the one who reaches for him first, clings to him really, & refuses to let him drown, when no one else sees it or is brave enough to help him

Troy's memory in the children's hospital is killing me. He's injured and alone in a hospital as an 11-year-old, and his father not only withholds all care, he berates him for it, and the only way Troy could be getting the care he needs from him, would maybe be by following along with his racism a deflecting his father's hate to the other boy.

Troy is uncomfortable with that and doesn't, so he is left behind.

This scene is like a master key to Troy's character. It's his taught survival mechanisms, his self-loathing, his loneliness all rolled into one.

His mom is nice and she loves him, but she is passive and just went along with stuff.

His father withheld care and attention, making clear that Troy's worth hinged solely on his ability to play hockey and make his father look good. He also made clear what the expected behavior was: being like Dallas Kent.

Someone please get Troy in therapy. Like, he's doing OK dismantling what he can on his own, but he really needs some help.

A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it's a good day for everyone.

That was on July 7th.

Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all--the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it's immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.

On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs--nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.

There's a specific chain of reblogs that I'd like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.

But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.

99% percent of the people who have seen the post--virtually unchanged from how it left my dash--have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That's insane to me.

None of those 36 people know that they're part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.

And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.

You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.

This is probably too anti-psychiatric for the HR fandom, but I honestly believe Ilya would be the last person to ever suspect Shane is autistic. Most the time, non-autistic people with a commonplace understanding of autism only suspect a person is autistic when they perceive that person’s behavior to be so abnormal and/or disruptive that in their mind it could only be explained by a condition. But Ilya is always either unbothered or endeared by Shane’s autistic traits. Sometimes he doesn’t even notice them. It just doesn’t make any sense to assume that he would ever look at Shane doing something that he either has no problem with or finds adorable, and then think, “This has to be a symptom of something.” Honestly if Shane ever did get diagnosed, I don’t think Ilya would believe it. And sorry but I also kind of think this is exactly how Shane would want Ilya to be.

I feel like Shane has a diagnosis that went with another diagnosis, had therapy, never was seen as having a bigger issue than the “big issue” the autism diagnosis came with and then later it comes up and he goes “I was never diagnosed” and his mother goes “you absolutely fucking were, but you wear four and you stopped showing about half the symptoms by the time someone explained all the rules of hockey and your life suddenly made sense”

OR “We tried to get you diagnosed but by then you found hockey and the doctor said you were a pretty normal little boy, but wow did you love hockey”

If Shane had been diagnosed in the 90s he would have never gone on to play pro hockey. A diagnosis in the 90s would have drastically limited his life opportunities. He probably wouldn’t have even been allowed to attend school normally. He would have been put in special ed. by default. I think a lot of people who think Shane should have been diagnosed when he was younger don’t understand that a diagnosis back then ruined your life. Never mind that our understanding of autism in the 90s was completely different. If Shane had been professionally evaluated as a child they would not have diagnosed him with autism.
