That's really interesting. I've lived in Texas my whole life, and I don't know many people with parents fluent in Spanish who aren't fluent themselves. Although, my ex girlfriend did say that she sometimes had trouble around her extended family because she was so used to English, but she was definitely still fluent in Spanish.

However, I've found that some other languaged get lost across generations here. One of my best friends is half Chinese and half Korean. Both of his parents are fluent in their native languages, but he hardly speaks either.

Maybe it's just where I lived, but I'd say about 50% of people I know are at least conversational in Spanish, including plenty with no Hispanic heritage, like me. I think multiingualism is really important. Try to learn the language of your heritage, and if that's English, go for one that may be useful. I definitely recommend Duolingo for learning languages. I've been using it to try to stay in practice with my Spanish, but I know a few people who have started from scratch on it.

I finally got around to seeing Coco, and it was pretty amazing. I'm not Mexican, but living in south Texas, the culture has always been a part of my life.

This movie made me so happy for all of the Hispanic children in the theater, as well as their parents who couldn't stop smiling by the end.

I'm liking this trend of Disney and Pixar making fantastic animated movies that go the extra mile to respect the culture they're portraying.
