Another post from an #icad2020 challenge. For this one I used water colour pencil crayons and #gellyroll markers. After last year, I believe my love affair with gel pens, when used as the main medium, is officially over. I find that with the pieces I do, coloured gel pens work best when I need fine lines and highlights on top of another medium. Honestly looking back I live how I was able to experiment with these mediums in my own time. While many drawings simply did not turn out, I had more successes than I had initially anticipated. Early summer when we were stuck at home (the og part one, not this sucky sequel) I decided to try my hand at @gypsy999 #icad2020 challenge. To the best of my knowledge I was only able to make it to about 3 weeks in however it gives me the opportunity to try new mediums and subject matter. This is another one where if there was a will there was a way. Printer paper, highlighter and a grid to get this idea off the ground. Working on getting colour schemes just right. I have the habit of grabbing whatever brings me joy in the moment without taking the next step of thinking how they will work together. In the before times I was experimenting with flourescent paint and gel pens. It's nice to just play with colours and see how far different mediums can go. This was acrylic paint, watercolour pencil and gel pens on lined school notebook paper. The importance of selecting the correct medium. That is what I feel like I've learned this year. Make sure to have paper that doesnt warp when you put water colour on it, make sure to have paper that doesn't pill when you use certain inks. It's important to have consistency in ones pens as well. Certain inks dont photograph well. Others can be blotchy. I started with Deli 0.5 gel pens, (half the time the ink had dried up)slowly switching to gelly roll(when I erased the pencil lines underneith the ink would erase too.) Now I'm using Sharpie S-Gel which seem to address both issues decent enough. While going through my old portfolio I found a bunch of things that I never posted throughout the past year or so. I had been working with grids and had limited supplies for artistic tools. So I had used some dollarstore markers and highlighters. It just goes to show that even in the moments between our more curated lines, artists brain are always looking forward to the next thing, by practicing new techniques. It also allows us to express ourselves in new ways. There are times when I want to keep some of these drawings hidden away, but it is able to act as a bench mark as to the influences that lead to the successful works.
