There was something very endearing about all of this. It was funny, really. Nan didn’t think he was a douche at all, but she didn’t expect him to be asking for her advice in these situations. Maybe she had judged him a little, based on looks.

It was kind of sweet. And it made Nan feel useful. She liked feeling useful.

“I mean, do you want to text her?” Nan asked, raising an eyebrow. “Because getting into a thing with someone just because they seem like they want you to is a recipe for disaster. Take it from me. I’ve been there. You think going on a date with a phlebotamist just because he’s a phlebotamist is a good idea, and it turns out he’s actually just some bloke named Josh!”

JT blinked a little at Nan’s anecdote and then chuckled. The laughter catching him off guard. What did being a phlebotomist have to do with anything? Did they make more money or...were they supposed to be...hot? JT didn’t understand the correlation, but he supposed it didn’t matter, because the phlebotomist was just some bloke named Josh.

“Uh--yeah, I mean, I dunno. I know I’m on Tinder and everything but...I am not sure if I’m interested in anything serious. She’s cute but she just...seemed to be, er, interested in a little more.”

Also, probably interested in his looks. JT was aware that his muscles and his height appealed to people. It was why he’d gotten the muscles in the first place, but they’d been helpful in other ways over the years. Sometimes, he worried that was all that appealed to them.

Dolores nodded at the information, itching to ask him to teach her words and phrases until she could dive in herself. “French was one that interested me a lot growing up in Avalor, it was the fourth I learned but I really didn’t become fluent until I moved here. There’s so many French speakers that it was easier to practice compared to home.” Any day of the week she would love to ramble on and on about her favourite things about each language.

“I’m fluent in Spanish which is my native language. English, Portuguese, French, and then BSL and AvSL.” Not that she was bragging. “Sorry that’s a lot I just love languages and culture and everything that comes with it.”

Growing up in Avalor. Ah. That made sense then.

“No need to apologize for having me beat, I think my ego can take it,” he joked, putting a hand to his chest as if he had suffered a blow. It was nice to meet other wordly people, though. In a small town like this, he was worried it’d be mostly small town people. Not that there was anything wrong with small town people, but JT could get rather restless.

“Which one is your favorite to speak, or--er, sign? Communicate in?” he asked awkwardly, not really sure of the proper vernacular. After all, he didn’t know any sign himself. Contrary to popular belief: gorillas couldn’t really learn it. One of JT’s many soapboxes.

Flynn wasn’t used to this either, he usually lived alone and with the jobs he took had a decent amount of money. But with the RAS relocation he was out of sorts until he could get access to his funding without them knowing.

“Uh use and replace things as needed until it seems like one of us is taking advantage of it or something?” People always did. Give and inch, take a mile. Goldilocks over here wasn’t going to be all that different somehow.

“Sure,” JT said with a shrug.

That wasn’t gonna bother him any. Yeah, sometimes picking up a pack of paper towels slipped his mind, but he also believed in equal work, so he wasn’t gonna leave it on someone else. He wasn’t the cleanest bloke, but he also wasn’t messy. Honest, he was rarely home, considering his long hours at the clinic and the amount of time he spent at his mum and dad’s helping out.

“You have any dietary things that I should be aware of? Or, uh--allergies? I’m good. Mostly eat vegetarian, but I’m not gonna be weirded out using the same pans and I’ll eat meat. Just am picky about it.”

Nan did notice JT putting something in his pocket, and she smiled. But she was tactful enough to wait until they were out of earshot of the apple cider booth.

“Weeeell?” she said, grinning knowingly. “Were we at all successful, or did I steer you into a dead end?” She had a feeling it was the former, but Nan didn’t like to assume.

“Pretty sure she did all the work,” JT snorted in reply, still blushing.

“She, uh, gave me her number. Didn’t really, er, take no for an answer.” Not that JT had tried very hard. The conversation had gone something like:

“So, there is that. Not...sure if I’m gonna text her or not, though. Is that douche-y?  That’s probably douche-y, right?” He ran a hand through his hair.

“Oh, Mr. J isn’t gong to ride the carousel—” she said, glancing at JT. “But that’s a nice offer. Maybe—”

Just as Annie said it, the carousel began turning again. “Never mind, then. But thank you. That was nice of you to offer.”

“You’re so right, little man,” JT said with a chuckle to Jax. He glanced back at Annie, just ready to make a jog for it, to go talk to the attendant. Partially to be helpful, and partially to maybe get out of this super awkward interaction that he wasn’t sure why he’d gotten himself into.

The carousel started moving.

“It’s, uh, no problem.” He drummed his hands on the metal barriers set up to direct the line. “I guess that’s probably my cue to get a move on. I’ll, uh, see you around, Annie? Jax? Harlynne?” He smiled softly at the little girl last.

Had Clayton known that?

He honestly couldn’t say. Maybe. Something mentioned by his mother, over the breakfast table, on a visit back home or something. She would’ve dropped in some line about a new cousin being born out there and Clayton, who tended not to listen to a word his mother said unless it had something to do with the flow of cash into his awaiting, very deep pockets, would’ve missed it entirely. Would’ve flown right over his head, and, honestly. Wasn’t that to be expected? He had more cousins than you could shake a stick at and the ones on his father’s side of the family were dreadful anyhow, so what was one more?

“Of course,” Clayton nodded, as if he had known that.

His eyebrows twitched, a barely imperceptable acknowledgement because Clayton did know about Gorilla Doctors. And Defenders of Wildlife, and Save the Elephants, and Four Paws and all the other groups of tree huggers who just like to spoil a bit of fun.

“A veterinarian,” He said, sounding at least mildly impressed. “Well, easy to see where the brains of the faily went, lord knows it wasn’t to Uncle Oswald– what was it like out there?”

“Oh, uh, yeah, haha.” Tazran had no idea who Uncle Oswald was. He didn’t know much about his parents’ families. Just that they were both wealthy...nobility, or whatever. That they both had siblings and he had cousins in London and scattered around Great Britain. He just...hadn’t met any of them and none had ever tried to reach out, so he was okay just letting things lie. The way his mama told it, he didn’t exactly get along with his family anyway.

“It was nice. Peaceful.” That was a half-truth. The sanitized version. Many parts of the DRC were quite peaceful and stable. It was the second largest country in Africa, after all. There was much diversity in the politics and quality of life. Where he had been, though, was dangerous. There was a lot of tension between the national park rangers and the people who lived in the area. It was a hard situation to navigate and JT had seen plenty to turn the stomach but--

He hadn’t been there for any of that. Just to help, where he could. And he didn’t like telling people about it, as they might get a bad impression.

“Everyone was very passionate and, of course, the animals were amazing. It was a humbling experience, being around such powerful, intelligent animals. I hope to go back one day.”

Nan shrugged, looking not very sorry about it at all. “If you ask me, a free cider is a free cider. Up to you what you want to do with it,” she pointed out. Of course, it was a bit easier for her to say when she didn’t have to be the one to make a decision here. She wasn’t going to admit that, though. “That’s probably for the best, I suppose. I believe in you, mate. Go and get her! Or, er— don’t get her.”

JT raised his eyebrows. He hadn’t expected Nan to be so cutthroat. Though, he supposed, he didn’t really know her that well. Had only hung out with her a few times. It wasn’t that he disliked it, he was just surprised. It was a bit funny, if only because she seemed so sweet.

“Alright, alright.” JT strolled towards the booth. For a minute or two, he chatted with the woman who’d given him the cider and then returned to Nan, tucking something into his pocket.

“Let’s, uh, let’s go,” he told her, nudging her gently so they could make their way out of eye-shot of the booth.

“Yeah, yeah!” Annie cut in a bit early, waving her hand in a way that was intended to illustrate just how casual and laid-back she felt about the situation, but instead may have come off as cutting him off. 

She said it too quickly, and then there was silence again. 

“Did you see they shut the ride down to clean it up?” Annie said abruptly. “It’s all that junk food they’re selling. Too much sugar, I’m sure. Wondering if we should just cut our losses and come back later.”

JT wasn’t sure if he was the one making this interaction uncomfortable or if it was Annie, but at this point...he was kind of regretting asking her on the hike to begin with. Clearly, she wasn’t interested, right? That’s what all this was about? Or...maybe he was just reading into it too much and letting his own insecurities get in the way...

“Oh, uh--” he wasn’t sure what to say to all that. “I am sure they’ll be done soon...I can, uh, go see for you, if you want? Since I’m not in line...”

(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:

Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980′s.  The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes.  

As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species.  

It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did.  

Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, it’s pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes.  

The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.

They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004.   

Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure.  

Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance.  

Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent.  (The process normally involves restraining the bird.)  

It worked!  

Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because it’s unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad.  

However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them.  (This would not work with real eggs because he can’t sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)

Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird.  White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he can’t retire while Walnut is alive.  (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.)

“Yes, you did,” Annie said. “Harlynne, say hi to Mr. J!” 

Harlynne peeked her head out from where it was buried in Annie’s shoulder and said a soft, “Hi.” It would have to do.

“I think we’re almost due for an N-A-P,” Annie chuckled. “But otherwise, it is such a lovely little event.”

She paused, not sure if she should… oh, what the heck? It was gonna come up eventually.

“Uh, I’m sorry I haven’t gotten back to you yet, about that hike! It’s just been busy busy busy in Tremaine World,” she chuckled.

“That so?” JT laughed at Jax’s enthusiasm and he waved, smiling softly, at Harylnne (right, it was Harlynne) when she peaked at him. Clearly, Jax was the extrovert of the family.

He was actually gonna ask Jax another question, about whether he liked the beignets or not (mostly to avoid any awkward silences with Annie) when Annie spoke first and brought up...yeah, the fact she hadn’t texted him. Now, JT wasn’t gonna be the kind of person to demand an answer for that sort of thing. Really, he was just looking for friends and if she wasn’t interested--that was fine. But he kinda realized that coming over here could give the wrong impression.

“Oh, uh--yeah. No, I mean--no big deal. I am sure it’s busy with the kids and everything.” Wait, did he even know what Annie did for work? “Totally no pressure. Uh, it’s an open invitation.” He held up his hands a little to show he meant no harm.
