Having a Mushroom Moment....

Most of my more popular posts this last month have been mushroom related! You guys will probably like this video tutorial for Twisted Yarn's Magic Mushroom Stitch.

It produces imo a really well-defined mushroom shape.

Oh it is. There's at least three different styles of cabling. And more advanced cabling at that. That sweater would take me like a year to finish.

All the cabling is done the same way. You just need to read your knitting and keep track of which row you're on

No, but for real. Knitting is just loops. Cables? Spicy loops. Lace? Spicy loops. Color work? Multicolored spicy loops.

There are no levels in knitting, there are no exams to pass or goals to achieve before you can continue.

The Handsome Chris is a perfect beginner project. It's all one color, it's knit flat, you get to learn lots of new techniques all at once, but most of all it's engaging and you're working towards a goal you really like.

I would have impaled myself on my needles if I'd been forced to complete a Sophie scarf before I got to advance to something more "challenging" like a washcloth, or God forbid a ribbed hat.

My very first project was a self-drafted 11-strand intarsia double sided cable scarf, because I didn't know I wasn't allowed and that was what I wanted to make.

This attitude of mystifying certain fabrics as advanced really twists my stitches. I cannot do simple stockinette colorwork to save my life, but I can 3-color brioche without looking.

There are no levels in knitting.

Make that fucking Handsome Chris if you want to, it's a great sweater. Or start with the Sophie scarf if that's more your vibe. But don't ever think that knitting is hard.

You sound like me telling a beginner crocheter "nah the alligator stitch is easy for a beginner, it's all just double crochets!" (a real thing I have said to people picking up a crochet hook for the first time). I'm not saying you can't start with a complicated stitch I'm saying it's very funny when people do.

"Once you know the basics" is my point. Beginners do not know the basics. I am a beginner knitter and let me tell you we're doing shit like "trying to remember how to cast on", "not dropping too many stitches and going on without noticing if you can help it", "trying to figure out how to keep consistent tension so the width of the project doesn't keep changing", and "trying to remember the difference between a knit and a purl because at least a quarter of these stitches are definitely backwards".

I do understand the point being made here and agree it is very funny when Overachiever Fiber Artists dive headfirst into the deep end BECAUSE that's me.

I did one big swatch of garter stitch with some random yarn I had and two pencils instead of actual needles, and then immediately moved on to a whole blanket, which became my first real finished project. Next finished thing after that was a pillow with cables, and then I decided to do a color block version of that same pillow.

Like, there's different kinds of beginners obviously but if someone looked at that and went 'I'm doing that sweater as my first Real Project' I'd be like hell yeah brother

I HAVE FINISHED MAKING MY BOOK ROCKY PLUSHIE AND I LOVE HIM

My kitty, Chili, as a size comparison to this absolute UNIT (I made him as accurate as I could to the book's description and I'm happy to say he is roughly that size!)

If there is interest I could also post a walkthrough of how I made him for anyone who also wants to make one of their own :3 (I'm a beginner so I would say making him is rather beginner friendly!)

I love him so much he's perfect as a pillow who hugs back! I will be making his outfit later on once my uni obligations relax a bit ^^'

Finally bought some dye and have been having so much fun with optical color mixing. I decided to start with cmyk primaries to get some vibrant color options.

So far I've only mixed up the main batch of colors, but I'll split them up and create a palatte of tints and shades once I have access to a scale again.

I don't have any fancy tools and have been blending the fiber by hand, so it's probably best I have a forced break for the sake of my fingers. Once I'm done I should have a very useful set of 57 2g swatches to play with! (Plus 5 more for a set of grayscale swatches)

If I'm still up for it, I might repeat the whole thing with my classic red, yellow, blue primary dye set. For a truly massive set of heather swatches.

I'll create a comprehensive guide to all the color mixes and my process once I'm done, but in the meantime here's a mixing guide for the colors I've already done!

The ratios are presented in the same order as the wool swatches in the photo above it. I didn't simplify any of the ratios so you'll have to deal with 2:2s instead of 1:1s, oops.

For anyone curious, I used brilliant yellow, deep magenta, and caribbean blue from Dharma dyes on their corriedale wool for my base colors.

My latest quilt (from the Allison Glass Cozy Quilt Sew-Along)

It's a reverse applique quilt. I designed and pieced a rainbow bargello quilt top, then layered it between pieces of black jersey, stenciled and hand stitched the outlines of shapes, and carefully cut away the top layer of jersey so the rainbow showed through.

Here's what my middle layer looked like on its own!
