Everyone loves to talk about carcinization but nobody talks about how unrelated clades of plants repeatedly evolve into trees.
Being a tree is just a way for plants to flex on their neighbors and soak up all the sun
^three distantly related plants that independently evolved into trees
They're both, that's what I'm saying.
Their family is grass but their body plan is a tree.
There is no "tree family". No ancestral ur-tree which all trees got their body plan from.
There are a number of commonly used terms to describe plants and animals which don't have a phylogenetic meaning. Tree & fish are two common ones.
If you get into the stuff which break the rules or have exceptions it gets even crazier. Like, panda, reptile, etc.
Birds are reptiles
