I think we should start treating "that's autism" as a thought-terminating cliché when people use it as a response to anyone sharing interesting information. Like yeah maybe it's autism but can't you engage with what they're saying instead of diagnosing why they're saying it and moving on.

In a personal response to Art Fight's clarification on tracing/guiding, I'd like to share the progress of my recent work...

I strongly believe if AF starts "cracking down" on "tracing/guiding," they're only going to punish beginner artists and/or folks who are experimenting. If used as a tool, as it should be, you won't notice it in the end result.

IMO, tracing/guiding reference images and 3d models is just like opting to use the paint bucket in your digital program rather than filling in a shape by hand.

I use guiding in my work all the time. It speeds up the process for me, and as you can see, it's not 1:1. Not everyone will be good at this; it's a tool to learn from, which is why I think it's silly to punish those who use this method in a yearly game where everyone experiments.

Here's one in my scraps that really shows this. It helps a ton with planning. Also, studios use this technique all the time. Check out Disney rotoscoping.

Am I going to be upset if someone *does* trace 1:1 for an attack? No. I'm going to be over the moon that they even took the time to draw my crummy OCs. All I care about is if the person had fun and learned something, as AF should be a space for experimenting and growing; how we get there shouldn't be part of the argument.
