Marvin thoughts?

Idk if I have anything to say that hasn’t been said already but I love him soo much. One of the characters of all time. He’s incredibly complex and I love how his character and how Bill Finn portrayed his character evolved throughout each iteration of the Marvin Trilogy.

The presentation of Marvin as a character and like the structure of each show progressively goes from more abstract to more linear and I think. Idk maybe that’s just Bill Finn experimenting but I think it’s a good portrayal of Marvin’s sense of self. Because obviously In Trousers is the most surreal which reflects a fragmented sense of self as both a teenager and a man who is just now coming to terms with homosexuality. March of the Falsettos is vastly more linear but there are still moments of surrealism with the title song and I think the structure as a whole feels more like vignettes and Finn and Lapine play with time a little more I think. Than they do in Falsettoland. And Falsettoland feels the least surreal to me. There are moments of it (it’s all surreal because musical theatre is an inherently surreal medium but I digress) like in What Would I Do but it’s the most linear of all the shows in The Marvin Trilogy because I think Marvin has finally mostly achieved self actualization in Falsettoland.

When I was younger and an honestly terrible person I heavily related to him (specifically In Trousers Marvin… yikes!) and I’m so glad I don’t anymore but I think as a gay man his experiences with masculinity and like this weird arrested development thing Marvin has going on is the experience of a lot of young gay men. Idk he means a lot to me thank you Bill Finn may your memory be a blessing

Idk if I sat and really analyzed the book and score I could probably have more profound things to say but I don’t rlly feel like that rn… but thanks for the ask!
