So tik tok and instagram are directly, strategically contributing to the sexed political divide. I’m not surprised by that when it comes to which videos, but the fact that there is a completely different comment section…

The next time you’re watching this masterful scene I want you to remember that 3D objects in the computer have no physical properties and can clip through each other without care. Which means that every stretch of skin, every forceful kiss, every tender hand placement, every single physical touch and movement has to be meticulously crafted and executed flawlessly by the animators to ensure that it looks realistic. It boggles my mind at how much work was put into every single frame of this scene and I thank the animators for their service.

Making fictional food can be both a creative and communal activity.
My newest column for Atlas Obscura is live! This one—on food and fandom—was so fun to report. 🍰 Beyond official cookbooks and screen-accurate representations, I talked to nearly a dozen fanfiction writers and readers about including and cooking from recipes in fic!
Many thanks to everyone who shared their experiences with me for this piece—and especially @aimmyarrowshigh, who sat down for a full interview to talk about the broader food-in-fic topic:
“From my very earliest understanding of fiction, it always had this component of what is now my favorite canonical tag on AO3, ‘Food As A Metaphor For Love’” says V. Arrow ... “That’s such a part of how I think about building character and building intimacy and building relationships,” Arrow says. “I always joke that the only thing I know how to write is two people having a heart-to-heart while cooking together.”
Eeeee! I'm so excited to see the finished product of this article; it was a total delight to talk to @elizabethminkel and doubly so that it was about my very favorite fic trope.
Many thanks to @iwritesometimes ,one of our chefs this year, for sending this our way! What a brilliant read about food and fandom 🤩 and during StarTrekPotluck2024 to boot 🖖✨

My offering for the @startrekpotluck! I thought I'd showcase one of my favorite midwestern classics, the Pretzel Salad. + Recipe under the cut <3
PRETZEL SALAD
Supplies
9 X 13 Baking Pan/ Casserole Dish
Hand Mixer (Optional)
Crust Ingredients
6 Tbs Unsalted Butter
2 Cups Finely Crushed Salted Pretzels
3 Tbs Sugar
A Pinch of Salt
Filling Ingredients
8 Oz Cream Cheese
1 Cup Sugar
2 Cups Heavy Cream
1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
Strawberry Topping Ingredients
2 (3 Oz) Boxes of Strawberry Jello
2 Cups Boiling Water
4 Cups Sliced Strawberries
Instructions
Set out Cream Cheese to soften
Preheat oven to 400 F
Melt butter in medium bowl
Add crust ingredients to melted butter, stir until evenly moistened
Spread mixture on the bottom of your pan, press into even layer
Bake until fragrant (8 - 10 Minutes) then place aside to cool completely
Whip cream cheese and sugar in large bowl until smooth (Hand mixer on high if using one)
Beat in Heavy Cream and Vanilla Extract
Spread Filling over crust all the way to the sides (This is to make sure the crust doesn't get soggy with the topping)
Refrigerate until chilled (1 Hour)
Mix both boxes of Jello in large bowl with boiling water and whisk until dissolved
Refrigerate 30m (Jello should not be set, it should be about the consistency of a runny egg white)
Add strawberries to Jello and stir
Spread Jello over filling
Refrigerate uncovered until firmly set ( 4 Hours)
Serve chilled! :)
(PS. If you were curious I made up Dyrk - Boshak Kap. It's literal translation is cream filled bread. I couldn't find a lot of Vulcan desserts so I just kind of made one haha. I imagine it having some kind of fruit element and the bread is flakey like a pastry)
(PSS. I know I spelled recipe wrong in the comic. Its too late to fix it now I'm sorryy)

@curator-on-ao3 and I are pleased to bring you a little dinner, a couple of drinks, and a cameo for dessert in our offering for the 2024 Star Trek Potluck 🍽️🧑🍳 Big thanks to the mods at @startrekpotluck for putting together this year’s feast!
❤️ Number One | Una Chin-Riley/Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk/La’an Noonien-Singh
🤝 Number One | Una Chin-Riley & James T. Kirk, La'an Noonien-Singh & Number One | Una Chin-Riley, James T. Kirk & Christopher Pike
📖 What if Captain Pike had invited Jim Kirk to his house for dinner instead of leaving Jim at the bar contemplating a salt shaker? What if, a half decade after that, Jim found himself in need of a first officer? What if, a few decades later, a simple dinner invitation changed the course of a young cadet’s life?
🎬 Rated P for potluck, K for kitchen brawls, F for flirting post-coma, and G for genius-idiot googly eyes
📏 12,206 words (😱)
🏷️ missing scene (Star Trek 2009), canon divergent (Pike lives and other changes to the ending of Star Trek Into Darkness), canon what canon (Star Trek Beyond), Found Family, food as an act of love, fighting as an act of pedagogy, drinking as an act of camaraderie, playing fast and loose with ages in the AOS way
