Diné Weaver Venancio Aragón

"From researching historic twill patterns in museum collections to dyeing wool with Kool-Aid, Diné (Navajo) weaver and instructor Venancio Aragón interlocks research and experimentation to expand the visual and technical vocabularies of Diné weaving. Working on the Diné upright loom, Aragón is part of a generation of Diné weavers who reinterpret ancestral knowledge through experimentation, carrying the medium forward on their own terms. As he stated in our interview with him, “I am not a purist.”

Based in Farmington, New Mexico, Aragón is trained in cultural anthropology and Native American and Indigenous studies, currently teaching at Diné College, the Navajo Nation’s tribal college. Before transitioning to full-time weaving and teaching, Aragón worked as an interpretive park ranger at the Mesa Verde, Aztec Ruins, Bandelier, and Petroglyph National Monuments, where he led tours and developed public education initiatives. He was born to the Tó’aheedlíinii (The Water Flow Together People) clan and born for the Naakaii (Mexican people). His maternal grandfather is of the Tsénahabiłnii (Sleeping Rock) clan, and his paternal grandfather is of the Naakaii (Mexican people)."

I read a truly fascinating article in a theological journal for uni years ago that I wish I could find to source properly, and basically, the author argued that the tendency to view Mary as a figure practically at the level of God (intentionally or not) comes from our refusal to see the feminine and maternal that is found in God already. People want a mother; they want a feminine divine figure in their lives; they need a 'woman God', and because there has been such a patriarchal, misogynistic effort to erase all femininity and motherhood from God, refusing to let God be the Mother or be the maternal or feminine role, Christians of all sorts throughout history have turned to Mary to try and fill the void. She is the 'acceptable' divine mother, since God as Mother is 'unacceptable'. They're yearning for God the Mother, and because that has been denied to them, they have pushed all of that yearning and spiritual need onto Mary.

That doesn't mean that Mary does not carry her own love for us, or that she cannot be one of our mothers if we so desire, or that we cannot welcome her into our spirituality, but it does mean that when we feel that intense push for a divine mother, we have to ask ourselves if it isn't a significantly greater likelyhood that we are yearning for our God, God the Mother, God the Creator and our Salavtion, than we are for anyone else.
