okay so the problem with nonfags' analysis of homoeroticism in art is that most of you are very very bad at recognizing actual homoeroticism. I say this as a gay man.
like most of what you guys think is homoeroticism is actually just "gay bravado", which is a process where straight men ritually reinforce their own heterosexuality by joking about gay sex with each other. It's a form of homophobia. The joke is that gay sex is repulsive, bizarre, and inconceivable for them to actually engage in. it's incredibly common and I can't believe we're still having this discussion honestly
no no this is an excellent addition thank you
my theory behind a lot of the homophobic gay "roleplay" that straights engage in is that it's just a projection of their inner desires. it would be taboo to express them seriously, but humour affords them plausible deniability - they're able to express those feelings without fear of social reprisal
this is coming from someone who (as a young teen) engaged in such behaviour when I thought I was straight, and whose friends also engaged in such behaviour. I'm convinced I'm not the only one who's queer out of that lot. they're also all dicks (performatively or otherwise), but that's men for you...
I guess my point is that OP's interpretation of this phenomenon is perhaps looking at it in bad faith. not that most of the dickhead straight men deserve good faith, but we're never going to understand the world if we only look at things through one lens
is it possible that many of them engage in this behaviour just as a sleight against the gays? absolutely. is it possible that it's some projection of their repressed inner homosexuality? of course. is it probably a mix of both with a load of other stuff too because shit is nuanced and trying to reduce the psyche of an entire demographic to a few sentences is perhaps a misguided effort? obviously...
TIL that "you'll be back" from Hamilton isn't about the king's wife/lover...
for reference: I have never actually watched or listened to the entirety of Hamilton (I usually get bored about 10 songs in), so I do kind of have an excuse
I always thought the bit about his "sweet submissive subject" was a cleverly misogynistic double-entendre lol
also when I asked my girlfriend "who the woman in the song is", she obviously started laughing at me. I then was like "oh I misinterpreted the song", and she was like "yeah no shit"
you'll never guess what the next interpretation my mind jumped to was...
"oh it's his gay American lover, like Washington or something, probably"

as a hong konger i feel the need to speak out and give a local's perspective on the fire that has ravaged tai po's wang fuk court because there's so much disinformation and western gazed reports regarding it.
a quick background to the incident: a fire broke out in the housing estate of wang fuk court and caused the burning of 7/8 blocks in the estate. so far a total of 128 deaths have been reported with around 200 more missing and 79 injured. the fire burned for a total of 43 hours. the housing estate was undergoing a renovation project that cost 330 million HKD (around 42mil USD) when the construction material of one block caught on fire and subsequently spread to the rest of the buildings. around 4.6k people live there and majority of them are elderly.
a lot of the media is blaming the bamboo scaffolding for the cause of the fire's spread. that is not true and is a distraction from the actual problem of corruption that caused this avoidable tragedy.
for starters, bamboo scaffolding is a centuries old practice that is a recognized cultural heritage in hong kong. everything in hk, including the iconic skyline, was built using bamboo scaffolding. centuries of cantonese opera shows hosted in bamboo theatres had hot food stalls with no issues of burning. it is not because it's cheaper or from an inflated sense of nostalgia but a factual thing you can easily confirm by looking up any heat test with bamboo. but the most obvious proof you can find is that the site itself shows the scaffolding mostly in-tact while the safety net is almost completely gone.
which brings me to my next point about the nets. they have been proven again and again by residents own tests to not meet standards of being fire-retardant. there have been complaints made an entire year before that were dismissed as inflammatory rumors aimed at hindering the renovation. this is a test from TVB news showing how a net with fire-retardant properties vs a net without would react under fire. but if that's not enough, here are multiple videos showcasing how the fire's spread was completely accelerated by the nets flammability.
video showcasing the start of the fire (with jumpcuts showing the spread within a 10 minute window)
網民 striking_biking 於Threads上
video showcasing another block of the estate that ignites into a chimney of flames within 30 seconds
(backup) 左邊一棟,由外圍開始見到火到燒到頂, 30秒! 就算有咩警鐘都唔會有用
rather conveniently as well is that construction sites across hk the day after have begun removing the safety nets. i know of people working in construction who can corroborate as well.
as always, the incentive for such corner cutting is money. fire-retardant nets cost 6-10 times more than regular nets. among this was the use of styrofoam boards as opposed to metal for blocking out the windows within the construction site, which as another factor in aiding the spread of the fire.
this renovation project was the most expensive out of the 3 proposed for the estate. it was majority paid by the residents, with each tenant required to pay 160k for the project. i would also like to add that as wang fuk court is a part of the home ownership scheme, they are owned by the housing authority, which is an agency of the hong kong government.
330 million in funds yet they could not even afford the bare minimum of fire proof materials? their greed and corruption is what turned the housing estate into a death trap for the thousands living there, NOT the bamboo scaffolding.
another tragic (and suspicious) factor in the deadliness of this incident is that the fire alarm system for all 8 buildings failed to sound, which likely caused the deaths of many more as most people reported not even knowing there was a fire until either the smoke reached them or they could see the flames.
the government's response to this has been to immediately roll out policies to switch to steel scaffolding as opposed to addressing the real issue of corruption involved. likely because of the election coming up next week (which has still not yet been cancelled despite the tragedy) where there are candidates directly involved or connected with district councilors that allowed this to happen by denying and shutting down resident's concerns. people are also concerned that this is just another method of streamlining the process of outsourcing labor from mainland, as their standard is using steel scaffolding and their labor is far cheaper. this would also allow the mainland industry of providing steel scaffoldings to break into hk.
majority of the relief effort has been funded by or provided the citizens of hk themselves. volunteers have poured in from across hk as well as the bordering shenzhen to help deliver supplies for displaced residents. if there is one feel good thing to take away from this incident is that we fucking care about each other, far more than this shit ass government. the initial relief funds offered by the government was a mere 10k per family, just plain disrespectful when they've lost their everything. (as of right now it has been raised to 50k, likely due to backlash but it still does not compensate even the amount that they've paid for the renovations that took their home)
i mostly wrote this post as a half rant and half psa to let people know from a hkgers pov the blatant display of greed and negligence that allowed for something like this to happen. this is not a tragic accident but a situation so preventable that all the people involved should all be charged with murder. this is the deadliest disaster hk has faced in the last 70 years, and the death toll is only expected to rise as the fire brigade actually starts breaking into flats individually.
hk is very small so most people, myself included either know or know of someone directly affected by the tragedy. about 50% of hkgers, again myself included, also live in these types of housing estates. i'm deeply disturbed and appalled at the implications and would like more people to know how complicit our government is in this incident.
a correction and addendum to this
i severely miswrote the amount the residents had to pay. it was $160k-180k and not $16k. the post has been edited.
this is an episode from the the tv show Scoop (local show that investigates and reports audience submitted problems) from 2024 showcasing how residents have been complaining about the sudden charge for the reconstruction fee and how many were unable to pay that amount. among the details reported is that residents were not even informed of the $160k they'd be needing to pay until the month they were due the first bill.
this also means that the $330 million was majority from the residents themselves.
if there ever needs to be more proof that this is corruption...
suddenly realized i haven't seen a single tumblr post about yesterday's ECJ ruling (that all EU countries must recognize same-sex marriages conducted in another EU country, even if the country in question does not have legal same-sex marriage). this is huge and feels like people on here would be more enthusiastic about it
European Union countries must recognize the lawful same-sex marriages of EU citizens conducted in other member states, the bloc's top court
This makes my friend's marriage legal and I'm really very happy about it for her & her wonderful wife! The Czech Republic has civil unions but not gay marriage, so they went to a different EU country to get married. :] I think the Czech Republic already did recognize the marriage but it's nice to have outside backup.
i feel like when we talk about autism as a disability a lot of it is about sensory stuff (valid) but recently ive been like. damn this really is a communication disorder. so much of the stress being autistic in society causes me is related to communication. its really insane how for years of my life i thought my autism didn't really affect my social skills much. could not have been further from the truth i spend so much energy trying to make sense of how to engage with other people. and i think it's good to put this in terms of disability and not just "my brain is different" because it's not just that my brain is different! all brains are different! mine is different in a way where it makes things noticeably harder and more exhausting for me.
I see autistic people sometimes act like this is just a problem for us because we live in a neurotypical world, right? but my friends, my social circle is pretty much chock full of other neurodivergent people, and I am still constantly dealing with communication frustration. even with other autistic people. even with other autistic people I like.
my brain gets a little rigid sometimes, and sometimes that means I miss interpretations of sentences... and sometimes, the interpretation that I missed is the only interpretation to occur to the other person I'm trying to communicate with. Which is more common if you're both autistic! Both of us are being reasonable, but... small miscommunications still happen. which is frustrating. you can learn to account for them, like triple-checking meanings when it's important or talking about why interpretation problems happen, but it's still a little layer of difficulty-grit that is always getting caught in my skin.
what is your LEAST favorite stitch?
I don't like counted work at fucking all. So: the cross stitch.
reading this as someone who does cross stitch but is scared of the other kinds of embroidery is like overhearing an incredibly tall and buff person say they have beef with Mr. Tom, the kitten that chills at the bookstore
FUCK Mr. Tom and his stupid little fluffy tail ok. And his little charted designs.
Okay, but this neglects the true villain of embroidery stitches: the French knot
Don't you dare malign my girl again
Ok the french knot is very useful but it is a BITCH to do it consistently
We talk about how this website’s hate mail game is insane, but this might just be a new level
"skill issue" made entirely from French knots is a next level roast. no coming back from that one. damn
When someone comments a bunch of shit on your post that was already stated in those exact words in the post itself and yet they're somehow also positioning themselves as against the point of the post. Can we make reading sexy again on this website
I won't block someone for commenting stupid but innocuous shit on my post. I won't block someone for commenting stupid but innocuous shit on my post. I won't-
I see this literally all the time on the internet and in real life and like... people are just really good at missing the point to enable them to have a disagreement. it's funny to watch but also sad
(inb4 someone thinks I'm disagreeing with you lol)

Artillery Luger from the German Empire dato to 1914 on display at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, England
Artillery crews manned guns of immense destructive power but still required a self-defence weapons. Rifels were too large and heavy, and pistols were limited to short range. This pistol carbine bridged the gap with a shoulder stock, long barrel and long range sights. Its firepower was enganced by a drum magazine.
