At the end of her shift, Elifa heads down to the servant’s quarters just as Rax is coming up. He’s her favourite of the security team who look after Princess Camaleia, Deltan and Prince Arkan. He has a funny story and a cheeky smile to share with her which makes her feel less tired.
In a different time and place, she’d love to get to know him better...

Irka is in the library, taking a break from studying to do some sketching. She is feeling lonely and despondent. No one seems to care if she studies or not, apart from Camaleia, and she’s too busy to be around properly.

Princess Camaleia and Deltan are spending some time outside in one of the courtyard areas of the Palace with Prince Arkan. They love him so much.

The next morning, Sefiya is sitting for a portrait and Moncief is pacing in the background.
Moncief: “Babe, c’mon, let’s get out of here...”
Sefiya: “Mon, I said you could come if you were quiet and didn’t get in the way,”
Moncief (slumping in a chair): "Urgh, fine, whatever...”

Embara finds herself face to face with a handsome and slightly confused stranger. He quickly seems to realise what is going on and plays along, asking how she’s been.
“Oh hi Tegrine,” says Embara as Tegrine comes up to her, “sorry, I can’t talk now, I’m just catching up with someone.” Tegrine is peeved and hangs around a bit but then stalks off, as the handsome stranger chats with Embara. He’s so charming that, despite herself and despite being quite distracted, Embara finds herself getting a little fluttery.
With Tegrine gone, Embara smiles a relived smile and introduces herself properly.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Daniel,” he replies.
“Daniel? An Earth name?”
“Yes, I am from Earth.”
Embara is astonished. She’s never met anyone from Earth before. She’s never even heard of anyone coming to Aurelia from Earth in her lifetime.

As Tegrine strides with purpose towards her, Embara desperately tries to grab the attention of the nearest person.

‘Oh no, Tegrine is here... Why didn’t I tell security to ban him from the Palace? And where is Irka...?’

Irka is ready and waiting for her sister Embara to come collect her so they can go together.
There’s a knock at the door.
Irka: “Hi! Oh, you look... ”
Embara: “I knew it! Its the dress; its too casual, isn’t it?”
Irka: “Its nice! Its just not your usual style. Emb, you’d look beautiful whatever you were wearing”
Embara: “I just want to stand in a corner and have no one notice me and no one talk to me. Especially no one talk to me”
Irka: “I don’t think that’s going to happen. Does anyone know you broke up with Tegrine?”
Embara: “Urgh, not yet... What’s this thing for tonight anyway?”
Irka: “Oh something about business leaders. Its going to be a massive snooze fest”

Last night at the meeting of their ‘cell’ group, it had been difficult for Irka to find a gap in the conversation to bring up some of her own ideas but Arienne was always willing to listen and discuss on their way home.

Irka is supposed to be getting ready for the function this evening. She’s put on a wig to hide the short hair that would get her in big trouble but she’s gotten distracted, texting her friend Arienne.
Arienne doesn’t know she’s a princess. They’re discussing the different roles they’ll have in the government of the new political system. Irka has suggested Arienne should be Minister for Culture and Bad Dance Moves.

Some Terra Aurelia background
Aurelia is a small nation founded by a human king and a Sixamian queen long ago. A land rich in natural resources, it flourished in between its much larger neighbours Xoxus and Norturea. Sixamian and human mixing across generations has meant that Aurelians carry genetic features from both, although blue skin tones are genetically dominant and characteristic of the royal family and nobility.
King Xaanceon of Aurelia has four daughters. Camaleia is married to Deltan, a well-respected General before his retirement. As the Aurelian succession is patrilineal, their son Arkan is heir to the throne. As King Xaanceon nears the end of his life, Camaleia and Deltan are expected to act as joint regents upon his death and until Prince Arkan turns 18. Both currently act as advisors to the King and are able to maintain a sensible balance on the Advisory Council, without any particular factions or individuals gaining too much influence. King Xaanceon himself is often distanced and distracted from both the business of running the country and the business of fatherhood, retreating into himself due to depression, partly brought about by the death of his wife 5 years ago.
Camaleia’s sisters are Sefiya, Embara and Irka.
The traditions of the Royal family are based upon strict traditions imported from Earth at the founding of the nation. The princesses are expected to remain within the confines of the Palace at all times but their father turns a blind eye to their comings and goings, as long as there is no scandal brought to the family. It is an open secret, even in the Aurelian media, that the princesses often leave the Palace. When they want their movements to be secret, they use the system of secret tunnels that lead outside.
Functions and parties are often held at the Palace and there is a thriving nobility, whose wealth has come from land ownership. Those who acquire wealth through trading or business are seen as ‘new money’ and often excluded from the circles of nobility.
Notes on CC below the cut.
As her sisters have their breakfasts, in an infrequently-visited corner of the palace, the youngest princess, Princess Irka, is only just sneaking back in through one of the secret entrances to the system of tunnels that allow the royal family to exit and enter the palace unseen.
No-one would suspect the innocent, teenage princess has been sneaking out to join secret Revolutionary Movement for Democracy meetings and planning to overthrow the monarchy.

Elsewhere in the palace, eldest sister Camaleia offers a picture of domestic bliss, eating breakfast with her husband Deltan and son, Prince Arkan. They’re discussing politics.
As a well-respected general before their marriage (when he was encouraged by the King to retire), Deltan is closely following the developing hostilities between their two neighbouring countries. Aurelia sits in the middle, so their small nation is bound to be drawn into any conflict.
King Xaanceon seems willfully ignorant to the potential danger on the horizon. Camaleia is sharp and skilled at advising her father, despite her frustration at his frequent failure to engage with current affairs and modernise their tired and old-fashioned political system.
