“Basics, Part I”
Janeway and Chakotay having romantic candlelit conversations KILLS ME
Denial is not just a river in Egypt.
Sometimes they dont even know who the other person is because complete memory loss/ personality alteration... but... Flirting ?? oh god these two
Fic writers & fellow Ao3 users I have a question-
Do you like it/is it correct Ao3 etiquette to comment on a fic you liked even if it’s like, from 2005 and from a fandom long dead? I’ve been tossing and turning about this because I don’t wanna accidentally like, bring back middle school trauma for sonicfan420 on a random Tuesday.
ALWAYS COMMENT
I am no longer actively writing in one of the fandoms I used to write for but I am still active on A03, where I've posted a selection of stories from each of my past fandoms. A reader just commented on an old fic of mine, saying they'd love to see others imported from ff.net. I asked which ones (cos there are a lot, that's why I haven't done it already). She gave me a list of 4 fics. So yesterday, I imported a TEN YEAR OLD FIC and today, I woke up to a bunch of lovely comments. Some of these readers might've read this fic before, some not. Some might never have read it if this one reader didn't request it. I might never have imported it if it hadn't been requested. I honestly didn't think people would care about something I wrote a decade ago. But they did and that makes me HAPPY. TALK to writers. TELL THEM if you like/value/want to read their work. THIS ^^^ THIS is fandom at work. THIS is community.
ALWAYS ALWAYS COMMENT
There is no algorithm on AO3, please stop treating it like there is. It’s not tik tok. It’s not twitter. It’s not facebook.
ALWAYS ALWAYS COMMENT

This is legitimately one of my favorite gif sets and I have to reblog it every time.

ADMIRAL JANEGAY /incoherent screaming/
Well, this should help.
You guys know what I love?
Writing.
I love writing, and the art of putting words down when you can't speak them. Writing experiences you can't tell anybody or thoughts you can't explaiin to anybody.
I love the feelings that arise when I write, whether they're negative or positive.
I love the unfinished drafts and the messy ones that are completed but will stay hidden forever.
I love writing about love and family, and life experiences, and bonding, and I love getting to know myself through the things I write.
I love the feeling of accomplishment I get, even after writing 100 words for that day--it's more than 0 and that's something to be proud of.
Reblog if you love writing and everything that comes with it.
Okay let's see if I learned my lesson from last time: how many fics do you have posted on ao3?
1-25
25-50
50-75
75-100
100-200
200-300
300-400
400-500
500+
I'm don't post on ao3 but I'm nosy and I wanna see the results
people who use chatgpt to write fics will never know what it's like to have The Idea™️ appear in your head like a prophetic vision when you're half asleep at 3am and write it down only to wake up the next day disorientated and confused at the words you don't even remember writing but you continue trying to put them together because otherwise the itch in your brain will never be scratched and The Idea™️ will keep haunting your narrative and they will never experience the absolute flow state you reach once the words start flowing effortlessly on a random afternoon when you're waiting on a dentist appointment
i know i say this often but i cannot say it loud enough: people who comment on fics, people who reblog posts and engage with fanworks are the people who generate community and without them fandom would be nowhere, so truly thank you for your presence, you make the world go 'round <3
Kes does have a canonical age (relative to humans) and so does Neelix. They're 2 and 28.
Ocampa grow ~14 human years per year and she's a smidge older than 2, so she's about 28-29-ish+, so if anything, she's the older woman.
(also, just a small correction, Rose (Doctor Who) is 19, not 18, but I agree with your points about it, 19 is also baby)
Oh, cool. I didn’t know the 14 years one 1 thing.
I could have sworn it was revealed and one point that Rose was 18 when she met the Doctor, but as I can’t remember when, I’ll just have to take your word for it that I’m wrong. 19 is still barely an adult though. Much worse age gap than Neelix and Kes.
just watched the voyager ep where they reveal kes only lives to like 8/9 years and im seeing ppl talk abt this like it makes neelix a creep? am i missing something but she is clearly an intelligent and capable adult, it isnt a "born sexy yesterday" trope he isnt like teaching her how the world works.. it just seems like a weird scifi choice for her species but not like it makes neelix predatory or weird? idk
Thank you! I was just ranting about this to a friend last week!
Kes is an alien with a short lifespan. She is an adult … physically, mentally, and emotionally. I saw some comments on this post and not knowing how long they’d been together before Voyager, and Kes saying something about not having had a chance to explore something or other before Neelix, but that doesn’t automatically mean she was a child when their relationship started. Obviously, they didn’t meet until she left the Ocampa, and I doubt she was a child when she did that.
Let’s take another example: The fan favourite Doctor Who ship is the Doctor and Rose. Personally, I can’t stand it, but lots of people are obsessed with it, and nobody goes out and says there’s anything wrong with it.
But Rose 18. That’s barely an adult. I don’t know about most people, but I hardly considered myself an adult at 18. The Doctor, on the other hand, is almost 1,000. And he has stated that he was still a child at 90. So from his point of view, Rose is still a toddler. It’s exactly the same thing.
But no one complains about this. Or about all the vampire stories. But suddenly it’s different when the older one has our lifespan. You don’t have to like Neelix and Kes together, but don’t make the issue about the age.
Or if you do, you’d better have the same compilations about the other age gap stories.
I was riding along in the car with my travel cup of tea between my legs … open for some reason. I dozed off, only to be jolted awake by warm tea spilling in the worst place for it to spill.
Fortunately, it was only warm. Hot tea would have been a lot more painful. Also, fortunately, I’m wearing dark jeans, or it could have been a lot more embarrassing. 😂
