Day 3: Ways to Honor Your Ancestors
As the veil thins and the air turns still, we remember those who came before us, our ancestors, both known and unknown. Samhain is the time when the living and the dead draw close, when the whispers of the old ones can be felt in candlelight, smoke, and dreams.
This isnât merely remembrance, itâs connection.
đ Who Are Our Ancestors?
When we speak of ancestors, we often think of family lines â parents, grandparents, those tied by blood. But ancestor veneration in witchcraft is broader and more inclusive.
There are:
Blood Ancestors: those in your direct family line.
Cultural Ancestors: those who share your heritage, traditions, or language.
Spiritual Ancestors: witches, healers, mystics, and rebels who paved the way for the craft you practice now.
Ancestors of the Land: the spirits and peoples who lived, worked, and died where you stand today.
Chosen Ancestors: those who have passed but guided or inspired you in this life â mentors, authors, artists, or friends.
There is always questions about adoption and who you honor if you are adopted, but the real answer is to Honor who and what feels right for you. If you feel more connected to your adopted family, honor them. If you feel more connected to your biological family, honor them. If you want to do a mixture of both, do so. It is all about what feels right for you, there is no wrong way to do this.
All are worthy of honor. Ancestor work is not about worship â itâs about acknowledgment, gratitude, and relationship.

The thing is, we change. We are not the same person we were five years ago. Hel, a lot of us are not even the same people we were last week. We change, and our beliefs, favourites, thoughts and the way we see ourselves changes with it.Â
The same is true for our witchraft, religion and spiritual beliefs. This is why I have a list of question that I like to answer for myself every couple of years. I first started this when I came across a list of questions by Juniper from Walking the Hedge (site no longer in use) in 2008, yes, over ten years ago. Every few years I filled in the questions and looked back at the answers I gave before. Some never changed, some changed quite a lot.Â
When our coven started a new lesson plan, I gave out the list of questions as well. We sealed our answers in envelopes and plan to fill them in again, once we finish our lessons. Then open the envelopes and look at the answers side by side. To see how we have changed.Â
I looked at the list last week and found it actually lacking a bit. The questions were very deity- and spiritual based, so I was missing some more questions about my personality and witchcraft. So I decided to make my own list of questions!Â
Since I wanted to make this more a weekly journaling/grimoire prompt for myself I put together 52 questions. These can be answered weekly (maybe every year) or you can work through the list in one go and repeat that every few years or so.Â
Some notes on the wording: I consider myself both a witch and a pagan, but to keep it easier to read I only used wording like âwitchâ and âwitchcraftâ, they can however be substituted for âpaganâ, âpaganismâ or even âmy pathâ, should that fit you better. When I talk about âsacred spaceâ this can both mean a ritual space like a temple or casting of a circle, but also just your home or outdoors witchy environment.
Iâd love it if you would tag anything you feel comfortable with posting online with the tag #writeyourwitchcraft!

FLY guys ! I started making FLY because I wanted to tell a story where black boys love eachother and they arenât afraid to show it. The kind of kids who are never too cool to hug or cry in front of eachother. I think if we want the world to be safer for black kids we have to start in our own communities.
Help our story take Flight and follow FLY on Kickstarter. Launching June 9th !
A coming of age story about Black kids who finally have power to fight back against systems designed against them.

gentle reminders for anyone who needs it:
you have inherent worth simply by being alive. you are not a failure or unworthy for struggling with your mental or physical health. you're just a human being in pain.
you are not a burden; you have a right to support, care, & community, and it is not your fault that this world isn't built for disabled & neurodivergent people.
your emotions matter. even if they're big, or "out of proportion" to other people. everyone experiences life differently, and you deserve people in your life that treat your emotions with respect & kindness.
you are doing your best. i believe you. you don't need to compare yourself to others, or your hypothetical best self. who you are right now, in this moment, is enough.
it's okay to struggle with change. it can be scary, stressful, daunting, and confusing. you're allowed to take your time in figuring things out. you don't need to have all the answers today. life is about experiencing, not being perfect.
i'm glad you're here. many more people than you believe are glad you're here. it's okay. you're okay. you may not feel okay, or may not be doing okay: but as a person - you're okay.
be gentler with yourself. you're worth it.
Some people only apologize to restore access, not to repair harm.
Reblog if you understand that disability is not a monolith and two people with the same disability do not have identical experiences â¨
