Fictober 11 - Stupider people than us have done this
Little Leia Anne Forman was tiny, but mighty.
She made her earthside debut a full four weeks early, giving her parents and family quite a scare, but after a few days stabilizing in the NICU, she was finally home.
Here, at their home. Laying in the middle of his bed. A baby - the tiniest baby he'd ever seen.
Eric still had to do a double take sometimes. The hospital, the nurses - they'd just let him take this baby home, for crying out loud. Him! As if he had any idea whatsoever how to care for an infant, or even hold one.
He had her propped up in the middle of their bed, a fortress of pillows surrounding her on all sides. She was sleeping, and Eric sat a few feet from the bed and watched her, completely enamored by watching her chest rise and fall.
Donna was in the bathroom. She'd been in there for a long time, taking a shower - her first since they'd arrived home from the hospital. Steam had started escaping from under the door, and he could hear her singing an old Queen song, languid and unhurried.
Eric was still in awe that he'd helped create this tiny human being. She had lungs, and eyes, and a heart and super light wisps of hair that swirled out from the crown of her head like it was circling a drain. So that was how hair started. He'd always wondered.
Eric had never felt this feeling before. He wasn't even sure what to call it. He was content in a way he'd never experienced before. And proud - so proud. Of Donna, how she'd brought their baby into the world like a warrior, how she'd handled every twist in the road with a calm, collected determination. Of his baby - his baby - just for existing. He was proud when she yawned, or made a little coo. Proud when she latched, like a champ. Proud when the nurses said she was breathing on her own. He never thought he'd be proud of someone for breathing, but here they were.
He hadn't slept in his own bed in over 72 hours, hadn't taken a proper shower or had a meal that wasn't from the hospital dining hall (which left a lot to be desired), but it didn't matter. None of it dulled his mood as he sat there, gazing at his baby girl.
Maybe he was delirious. But the circle had nothing on this feeling.
The bathroom door opened, and Donna came out in a cloud of steam.
"God, that felt good," she declared.
Leia rustled, and Eric's instinct was to shush Donna.
She raised an eyebrow at him. "Excuse me?"
"She's sleeping," Eric gestured at their newborn.
Now Donna chuckled. "Yeah, Eric. She's always sleeping. That's kind of what she does."
She folded herself onto the bed next to the baby gracefully. Leia opened her eyes at her mother's contact - just slightly. A hint of midnight blue before her eyelids fluttered shut almost stole Eric's breath.
He stood up and folded himself behind Donna, spooning close to her on the bed. They both stared at their daughter, in awe.
"She's perfect," Donna whispered.
"So perfect," Eric agreed. He kissed Donna's shoulder, but then frowned as he had a new thought. "I'm so scared I'm gonna fuck her up."
She turned in his arms, her eyes soft. "You will," she said.
It wasn't the reassurance he'd been expecting, and his frown deepened.
"Gee, that makes me feel confident - "
"And so will I," she interrupted him. She cupped his chin affectionately. "I just mean, that's like, inevitable, you know? We're gonna do things wrong. C'mon, it's us." Donna was chuckling.
Eric lifted his eyebrows. He had to agree, as his own track record of dumbassery ran through his mind.
"Okay. But stupider people than us have done this," he argued. "Like Kelso."
"And my mom," Donna added, bemused.
"Remember that idiot from homeroom? Doug Mackenzie?" He was one half of the notorious 'Destroy And Give Back' duo. "I saw him at the grocery store last time I was home. He has identical twin boys. They look like menaces."
"You're right. We make a pretty good team."
"And we make a pretty cute baby."
They both went back to staring at their baby, and Eric felt another swell of emotion he couldn't quite name. All he knew is that he felt complete, full, in a way he never had before.
