The pamphlet of the mdzs play cost 💴 2800 yen (≈$19USA) and looks so pretty.

According to one chinese user:

The first page is actually a never-before-seen sketch of Gearous for Wei Ying and Lan Zhan (rough draft).

The first 2/3 of the pamphlet consists of photos and messages from the actors, while the last 1/3 is dedicated to Gearous illustrations.

Under each person's name, there's a family crest, but the old ancestor’s (Wei Ying) name is unexpectedly "stabbed" by a knife 😭

In addition to pages introducing the 10 cast members, it also features group visuals and original illustrations drawn by the main illustrator Gearous for the stage! It's a luxurious book that can only be seen here.

So many thoughts about additions to the "canon" by virtue of background filler and theatre-style visual storytelling...

I love how the actors are allowed to show little details of their characters when they are on scene, not focused on. In a series we can't see that because the camera has its close-up shots on the protagonists, but in theater, the background characters are ALWAYS on sight. And they have to stay in-character. They could just stand in the background lifelessly... But no, of course not, they really show little details and I love that >w<

The additions I love are Jin Ling showing his quality of Rich Brat who was brought up in splendour, but he has his heart in the right place and despite his pride, he's making efforts to fit in with his new batch of potential friends. Cue him probably holding a duster for the first time in his life. Unbelievably cute and funny!

Or how about Xue Yang "showing" Xiao Xingchen that he's good enough to walk and join him in a night hunt again? Beyond how SPECTACULARLY SWEET it is to see him in such a child-like happy mood, it makes sense that he'd prance and skip like that, so that he can make enough noise with his feet for daozhang to hear!! Adorable. 10/10, no notes.

And finally, my favourite... Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen repairing the roof. I already mentioned in a post how wonderful it is to see the theatre production filling in on the detail of what made Xiao Xingchen laugh so much when they were up there (each new iteration of this story adds on to this scene and I'm ALL FOR IT!!), but the fact that it is Xiao Xingchen just. Being the most brute-force solution guy.

It cracks me up!!! Because it is such a contrast with Xiao Xingchen's gentle personality that we otherwise always see... But!!! But it makes a lot of sense, if you consider that he also went through with ripping his eyes off to give them to Song Lan, WITHOUT TELLING HIM, and went on with his life just like that.

MDZS stage play, I'm ever so happy you exist and I'm even happier they have decided to make a dvd release. This way, I can cry at the screen for ever with them!!!

S3 ep7 - Game, Set, and Murder

Jack walks in, holds out a file, and says "sign this." And Phryne - clever, detailed, knows the law, under any other circumstance questions why anyone tells her to do anything - she DOES. Without hesitation. Without reading a single word. It's only afterward that she asks, "What did I just agree to?"

Are you KIDDING ME. Look, we're near the end. They've demonstrated over and over that they trust each other's instincts in emergency situations. But there is no imminent threat here - there's not even a palpable sense of urgency!

Jack believed it was important she sign a contract.

So she did.

This is sort of stating the obvious but part of what makes me so feral about Phryne's assessment of Jack in 'Death Comes Knocking' is that she's so right. Like, yes, that is that man! That's the character thesis!

And the things she describes are the parts that compel me the most about Jack. I'm absolutely obsessed with the orange-lined coat because it's an element of what Phryne is seeing. Complete professionalism disguising great emotion. She hasn't known him particularly long but she gets him. She sees the core part of him.

Meanwhile Jack, fresh from a divorce, recently confronted with his ex-wife who for their whole marriage saw his dedication to his work as a "lack of ambition" to climb the ranks, knows she's right and freaks out. Retreats back into the persona of the "careful", "cynical" man with "no passions".

But it's alright, because Phryne still sees him. He's putting his coat back on, but she knows the orange lining is still there.

I’d argue that part of what is so powerful to Jack is that Phryne is identifying things about him that he thought were gone—killed by the war. But they’re still there, and the fact that she can see them, doesn’t even question that he’s still that passionate, deeply feeling man, is a large part of why he falls for her in the first place. She helps to restore his faith in himself.
