The dreams haunt him every single night.
He wakes gasping, fingers clutching his red hair, heart pounding like it wants to tear free from his chest. Always the same scene: dim Taisho lantern light, the heavy scent of incense and rain-soaked wood, smoke curling through the air. He feels a sharp, fading pain, and hears his own voice breaking, sobbing into the dark — “Find me again. In the next life, please… don’t let me be alone.”
Strong arms wrap around him, holding him tight like he is something precious and irreplaceable. A voice, warm and steady, whispers promises he cannot quite catch — I will find you. I will wait.
No matter how long it takes. But every time he tries to lift his head, to see the face belonging to that voice, it dissolves into mist. He wakes empty, with only a hollow ache and a name he can never quite form on his tongue.
And then there is you — the man who has been by his side since they were seven years old.
You were there to bandage his scraped knees, to cheer loudest at every match, to sit with him in silence when he feared his injury would end everything. You tease him easily, saying things like, “If no one else sees how amazing you are, I guess I’ll just have to keep you forever,” and he laughs it off. It sounds like nothing more than friendly banter, just how you have always been.
You are constant, familiar, so deeply woven into his daily life that he rarely stops to wonder why your presence feels like coming home.
When Reo invites them both to his party, it is you who pushes him to go. “Clear your head,” you say gently. “Kunigami will be there too.”
Hyouma’s pulse jumps. For months, he has convinced himself Kunigami Rensuke is the answer. That this quiet, yearning emptiness in his chest is his soul recognizing the person it is meant to belong to.
The striker is kind, strong, and easy to admire — and when he smiles at Hyouma, it feels like hope. Maybe this is the face he has been searching for across lifetimes. Maybe this is who he begged to find him.
But as the night unfolds, the feeling never settles. It stays distant, soft, but empty — like holding a shadow. Nice, but not his. Not the warmth that feels as old as time itself.
When the crowd thins, he slips out to the terrace. Rain falls in fine silver sheets, and he leans against the railing, trying to untangle the mess in his head.
The lantern hanging above the door swings slightly, and golden light spills full across your face.
For one heartbeat — sharp, blinding, vivid — everything aligns.
The light matches the glow of the lanterns in his dreams. The shape of your jaw, the depth in your eyes, the way you stand like you have carried something heavy for centuries — it all clicks into place.
He hears the voice from the past ring clear and true: “I will find you. I will love you again, no matter how many lives it takes.” He feels the weight of your arms holding him as he died, the warmth of your forehead pressed to his, the sound of your voice promising to follow him anywhere.
That face — the one he could never see — it was yours.
His breath catches in his throat. His fingers twitch, aching to reach out and touch you, to ask how long have you been waiting? Why did he forget?
But before the words can form, before the memory can root itself in his mind, it slips away.
Like sand through his fingers. Like smoke dissolving in the wind. The clarity vanishes, leaving only a faint, hollow ache and the frustrating certainty that he almost knew everything — and now it is gone again.
He blinks, and you look just as you always do: his oldest friend, calm and steady, with that familiar soft smile. No trace of the centuries he almost saw.
“Couldn’t shake the restlessness?” you ask, your voice so gentle it feels like a caress.
Hyouma swallows hard, his throat tight. “Just… another flash. For a second, I swear I recognized something. But it’s gone. I still can’t see who it is I’m looking for.”
You step closer, and brush a strand of damp red hair back from his face — the exact same motion, the exact same touch he felt in his final moments long ago. It feels so safe, so right, yet he cannot explain why.
“Dreams are tricky things,” you murmur. “They show you what you want to remember, not always what is true. Maybe you are searching for something that belongs to a time you aren’t meant to recall.”
He sighs, leaning into your hand without thinking. “I really thought Kunigami might be the one. But being near him… it still feels like something is missing. Like I’m chasing a ghost.”
Your smile never wavers, but your eyes grow so deep and sad it makes his chest ache — though he tells himself he must be imagining it.
“Maybe,” you say, so quiet the rain almost swallows the words, “the one you are waiting for isn’t someone you need to search for. Maybe you have walked beside him every single day, and your heart just hasn’t learned to recognize him yet.”
Hyouma frowns, confused but comforted as always. “You always speak in riddles. But… thank you. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without you.”
You turn your gaze away, out into the dark garden, and he thinks he hears you whisper something else — something like “And I will keep loving you, even if you never know it.” But when he asks what you said, you just shake your head and say it was nothing.
Together, you walk back inside.
Hyouma spends the rest of the night lost in thought, wondering if he will ever find the person he begged to find him. He looks at Kunigami, then at Reo, then at every familiar face around him — never guessing that the answer stands right beside him.
He will dream the same dreams again tomorrow. He will wake confused and empty again. He will go on searching, maybe fall for someone else in time, and die without ever solving the mystery.
And all the while, the man who has loved him through every lifetime, who held him as he died, who promised to find him again — stays right there. Watching, waiting, and carrying the secret that will break both their hearts forever:
Hyouma never remembers. And he never will.
