Tim Minear really out buddied us. "Eddie jumped off that bridge so Buck wouldn't" is such an insane thing to just say. Obviously, now, looking at Buck's reaction to the jump, Eddie's unapologetic behavior about disregarding the chain of command, sure, Eddie is stopping Buck from doing that. But that is such a WILD way to lay the groundwork on how far Eddie would go for Buck's safety this season. Like, we know. Going up something that was basically a wet lightning without securing a line for himself after being thrown off the truck highlighted that. But like. To frame Eddie's reckless streak as something conscious to keep Buck safe is madness. And then you add Buck thinking Eddie has a death wish when he's just stopping Buck from doing the same?????? Eddie had to deal with Buck being dead. Eddie had to deal with trying to learn how to cope without Buck while in Texas. And his reaction was "no, I'm not doing that again" and he is coming up with crazy plans to get Buck out of a collapsed building, he's jumping off a bridge, he's cocking a gun and using a woman as a human shield. Eddie is making sure he's not going to be forced to live without Buck by any means necessary and that's CRAZY. Like, what do you mean?????????????

tim minear left us with the knowledge that maddie did not drive the ten hours to new mexico therefore the unspecified time of buck's recovery before he was allowed to travel was him and eddie alone in a town where almost everyone thought they were together with the weight of their ordeal hanging over each other and so i present you with an image of guard dog eddie claiming his spot in a chair at buck's bedside and refusing to move jolting awake every time a nurse comes to check on buck like a guard dog ready to gnash its teeth before realising they're just here to help but still tracking their every movement oh so carefully to make sure he's being treated by the gentlest of hands. and part of it is the knowledge that buck was taken from him and locked in a room and then tied up in a basement, electrocuted and pistol whipped and threatened at gunpoint. but another part of it is "we don't get a lot of your kind around here" and "you tell me princess" and "your... friend". and another part of it is waking up to an empty bed and finding out he was alone in the car and watching buck collapse. so when buck falls asleep and he looks so still that suddenly eddie is back in a hospital room he couldn't get himself into until his son forced his hand, eddie presses his pointer and middle fingers to the pulse point on buck's wrist and falls asleep to the steady tangible reminder that buck is real and alive and right there next to him. and buck wakes up to eddie's hand on his wrist and something holy shudders in his chest and it's so big. too big that his pulse jumps and eddie is halfway to waking, so buck takes a deep breath and calms himself down because he needs this as much as eddie does. an anchor to reality. he can't text bobby this time around but eddie can hold him here in the real world...
