To celebrate, I’m sharing a few of my favorite resources on suffrage/ first wave feminism that I used for research. 

Mead (2018) a basic overview of the US woman’s suffrage movement 

Online Biographical Dictionary of Woman Suffrage Movement in the US - biographies including lesser-known woman suffragists, with sections for Black and militant suffragettes (crowdsourced mostly by college students, yes this is a blatant self-promotion)  

Iron Jawed Angels: movie about American suffragettes Alice Paul and Lucy Burns (does have a liberal bent, Maddux 2004 talks about this more)

Case study on some anti-suffrage postcards, showing that anti feminist rhetoric has been around since the first wave (”what is suffrage without a suffering household”? kills me every time)

Article on British lesbian suffragettes (I don’t support Autostraddle overall but this chart was helpful)

*note that not all suffragists (supporters of the women’s vote) were suffragettes (radical militants who reclaimed the term which was used as an insult), and the green/white/purple was mainly used by UK suffragettes

it makes me so angry that gendered slurs are given nowhere near the same degree of respect as slurs against specific races or gay men. It’s almost as if slurs are only “bad” if men’s feelings are hurt.  Cunt?  Bitch?  Whore?  Slut?  Pussy?  “I call my male friends that too, so it’s not sexist.”

I think this happens because white people are scared of black people, but men aren’t scared of women.  No white guy is going to shout the N-word at an all-black college because, even though I doubt the students there would get violent, they are rightfully afraid someone would slap them and uninstall their face.  Men aren’t scared of women, so they talk to us however they please and disparage one another by comparing them to us. This is another example of how sexism is biological, since the relative frailty of women makes this abuse possible.
