It's not a secret datv writing (in general) is.. problematic and will always be a kind of cringe one but somehow and against all odds datv kept the solavellan romance dynamic intact.

Ten years ago we had "var lath vir suledin" (our love will endure). Inquisitor said it like a mortal would; she is sincere, passionate, and lost in emotions. It wasn't based on thousands of years experience, no real confirmation - heart speaking. Will it endure? Who knows, she just believed it would.

Solas said, "I will never forget you" - it's mind speaking. That was a thoughtful response of an immortal being who already lived hundreds of mortal lives. He didn't use "we"/"our", spoke only for himself because he knows he won't forget her. He had that confidence.

Ten years after we have "what I feel for you will never change". No questions, no reminding of her promise that sounded like an actual vow; nothing. Just a confirmation: I remember, I will never forget (as promised), My feelings will never change.

No pressure, no manipulation, no waiting for a certain response. The same careful tenderness as it was ten years ago. And it is beautiful.

I guess I'm just glad they didn't rewrite it. Decision to keep solavellan romance unchanged was surprisingly respectful.

There's something really interesting you see when you pair cole's personal quest with solas' atonement ending - that the difference between spirits and mortals is processing grief

In inquisition solas says how spirits are a single emotion. they must let go of any feelings that aren't what they already are, because to take on additional feelings is a fundamental contradiction and means they are changed. the true spirit path for cole is to forgive and let his rage go. but as varric points out, cole is in a human brain, and those have every emotion built in. the mortal path is to let all those emotions have their space to process, and to come out the other side learned and grown. there is no right answer here, its just a choice of one path or the other.

solas has been a spirit in mortal form longer than anyone in thedas save elgar'nan, but he's never accepted that fact, not really. in a way he acts like every other emotion is an indulgence, a treat, but he always retreats back to his logic and wisdom because that's who he wants to be. but unfortunately for him, he exists in a mortal brain he built around himself, so those emotions are always there whether he wants them to be or not.

which is where all his problems come from - he never lets himself grieve.

grieving lets every emotion have its proper space to process and settle, so you can continue forward. but that would take him further away from being a pure spirit, so he can't do that, which means he can't accept all that has happened, or any of his own mistakes. you can pretend every lost war is just another battle if you never lay down your arms. so he continues to ignore any opinion but his own in the hopes that one of these will work properly and he will have finally saved the world with nothing but his intellect, and refuses to admit his own decisions were ever biased or emotional. because spirits don't do that.
