so… do you remember that Edda poem in which a giant steals Mjölnir and demands the hand of Freyja in payment for its return? Thor and Loki travel to the Jötunheimr disguised as Freyja and her bridesmaid for the wedding ceremony in order to retrieve the hammer. Hilarity ensues.
Now: Luo Binghe steals Cheng Luan and ask for Liu Mingyan in exchange. The two siblings are so alike in physique and demeanor that Liu Qinghe could probably pass for her even without the veil his sister always wears, since nobody knows what her face actually looks like and their eyes and upper face are very similar. Shen Qingqiu accompanies him as a back-up but also because his shidi can’t act for shit, he can’t act to save his life, and you have to recognize that Cucumber Bro has some experience in the area (not that anybody knows…, but then, he is the only peak lord that has any resemblance of control over Liu Qingge). Luo Binghe, of course, at the sight of Mingyan’s beautiful and kinda buggingly familiar bridesmaid, is about to turn this satire into a shakespearean comedy.

Edit: this has gotten a huge amount of traction (fibrearts tumblr is a, uh, tight-knit community it seems!) so I am adding this note to state that I checked Lola Cody's website and can confirm: There is no dye in her work. She uses exclusively hand-spun Churro wool sheared from her home-raised sheep flock. It's all natural colours!
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH EVERYBODY!!! I recently finished this pride flag quilt top, which I'll be displaying at my local pride event next week!
I wanted each block to be different and eye catching in its own way, so that you don't get bored looking at bland stripes. This project is a labor of love. I did the math on piecing nearly every block, save for the house block on the bottom right corner. That came from a book. I went through quite a struggle doing all the math to make the blocks that are split diagonally by color. Those were the ones that took me the longest to get through. The regular solid color rainbow blocks? I flew through those in two days, lol!

a weaving based on Dora Wheeler's "Penelope Unraveling Her Work at Night", which is one of my favorite works that looks woven but is actually embroidered. I wanted to try out deborah silver's split-shed weaving technique, so I chose polychrome taqueté with linen and cashmere. I maybe should have chosen an easier technique with fewer colors to start, but here we are! on the right side, I left the uppermost warp threads bare to show the unraveling.
The blurb said the shot was taken in Granada, Spain, by Agneta Fondén. No other info, so I have no idea how old, etc. There's a game (from 1988) that uses a similar pattern on one of its pieces, but this could predate it by at least a thousand years — or not. But the pattern intrigued me, so I made a texture map and used Blender's geometry nodes (no generative AI) to set up a hexagon grid with random rotations for the tiles:

Finally got to see it tonight (I am SO glad I live near a city with a big Chinese population so the film was still showing; I heard it only got to show in LA for like 2 weeks and it was during a road trip I was on so I was scared I’d miss it). 🥹
It’s an expansion of episode 1 from the short collection Yao—Chinese Folktales, which can be watched here:
The film is focused on the life of the small-time yao that get no names and are basically henchmen in Journey to the West where they’re basically cannon fodder for Sun Wukong ADKFJSKFJSKSH.
In the movie, the plot is that the main characters (a boar and a toad) decide to impersonate Sun Wukong and his gang to try and be respected but also gain immortality, gathering two other yao to help them on their journey. 🔥
It’s a very funny movie but also pretty low-key—less flashy in terms of action than The Legend of Hei 2 and Nezha 2 and also sillier than the former but less immature than the latter!
It also has a very hopeful message and themes since it’s focused on the underdog and kind of more clearly reflects our reality (since the yao suffer from the hierarchy system and struggle to keep/find jobs).
I even forced my younger brother to watch it and it’s actually his favourite donghua film this year out of the other 2 I similarly forced him to watch in theatres. 😆

Plus it has legacy too since it’s animated by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, which was practically responsible for all animation in China after the 1920s-1930s in the 20th century before China opened up in the 1980s, and they evidently have tons of important historical animation under their belt like Uproar in Heaven (1961-1964) and Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979).
Nobody even references SAFS’ work with the Journey to the West characters, along with the iconic 1986 adaptation. ^^
Evidently Nobody itself is not doing too hot in western theatres and has already left some theatres, but I’d encourage you guys to watch it in theatres if you can! It is quite a pretty film and it’s cute and funny and honest and subdued and heartfelt and adds a really fun new dimension to Journey to the West.
It actually makes it so that this story doesn’t mess up the JttW canon at all despite using a villain directly from the story, so it can totally be taken as canon. 🔥
My favourite character is surprisingly enough the weasel ALFJSKDJSKS. HE’S ANIMATED PRETTY CUTELY AND HE HAS A FUN LITTLE PERSONALITY AND ARC TOO!

Tbh germ theory DOES sound crazy. Like if you told a regency-era nobleman that tiny creatures lived on the surface of everything and THAT’S what causes consumption, they’d be like “ah, I see you are a lunatic. Would you reside in my hermitage? Rantings and ravings do so amuse my guests”
Yeah, actually, it would probably be pretty easy to explain germ theory to a Medieval person as tiny evil spirits that live on everything, but they can be purified by soap and water, or by alcohol, because that is why God has granted us those things. And because they can float in the air, if you cough or sneeze after they have infested you, that can cause them to infest others. And when you are sick, the angels God has deputized to defend the bodies of His beloved children are at war with the evil spirits, and, sadly, sometimes they lose, but the best way to help your angels win their battle is to rest, drink plenty (this would probably be small beer in this time period, not water, because the water was also infested), stay clean, and for the sake of God do not allow anyone to let your blood, for the angels need that blood in their war against the evil spirits. Bloodletting is good for some types of illnesses but not the kinds caused by the tiny evil spirits.
boiling as a sterilization measure is also easy to explain. water returns to the air when heated and it rises as steam back up to the floodgates of heaven; we know God created the world in seven days, He's not up there making more water every time it rains. it circulates. the returning of water to heaven also purifies the water of unclean and malign influences. you know wormy water from a muddy puddle will kill your kid. you know you wouldn't wade into a bog and have a slurp. water that remains in the low places of earth absorbs all that is unclean from our waste and it may also sponge up new diseases from hell, we're not totally sure about that one, but it seems likely. God set up the heavenly water cycle so that the earth's waters wouldn't totally fill up with gunk.
what does this have to do with boiling your surgical tools? well look, the boiling water releases bubbles of steam which carries the malign influences up to heaven. you boil a knife, you send all the miasmic particles off with the steam to heaven. if you rinse the knife off in a bucket the water isn't hot enough, the particles go into the water and then right back on to the knife. you gotta boil it to get the particles all the way away.
how can a tool or rag or a bed have miasmic particles on it when you can't smell them? humans have a lousy sense of smell. look at your dog on the hunt. are there no rabbits in the woods just because you can't smell them? we know that miasma is carried on the air, and is what makes stench so dangerous, and we know that humans can't smell worth a damn compared to dogs cats horses etc. a dog can smell if a rat died in a corner of the room last week. you can't. do you think licking the spot where the rat died is going to go well for you? luckily, what humans lack in snout we make up for in brains. we have extra brains where our sniffers should have been. God set that up for a reason.
and why does a rinse with wine spirits work? man, look how fast alcohol evaporates. my guess is that because wine contains a lot more vice than water, it evaporates a whole lot faster, in sort of an equal and opposite way that a rock falls faster than a feather. if you want the miasmic particles to get off there FAST, you dunk it in something that's going back to heaven at a gallop.
what's up with honey? it just preserves things against corruption. doesn't clean them off. honey doesn't evaporate at all. probably because bees don't sin. it's not good for ridding a tool of particles-- it's sticky-- but fine for preserving anything you don't want to go to heaven OR hell. this is why you wash the wound with wine spirits or purified water FIRST, to sluice the miasma out, then slap the honey on AFTER. and boil the damn bandage, too. you wouldn't put a rotten door in a sound doorframe and expect it to keep out bandits, would you? cmon.

okay i have a long and complicated heterosexual steve/bucky au but what matters is that the super serum functions essentially like testosterone & steroids. and thus a cis female steve still passes for a man and ends up doing a whole mulan thing with captain america. which she has complicated feelings about but lets not get into that bc the point of this post is her accidentally stolen-valoring like half the identities within the lgbtqia+ community
sam thinks shes a trans woman who's transitioning in the modern era. super reasonable assumption based on what he knows ("captain america" is a man in all the history textbooks, but stevie actively makes an effort to get gendered right off the clock). he fumbles on pronouns like twice while figuring it out and then becomes Steve's Biggest Ally TM and never finds out he is aiding a cis woman with her gender dysphoria and not a trans woman. cool bro move regardless thanks man she needed that
natasha thinks steve is nonbinary and the gender role switching comes from that, because natasha has an insane relationship with her own body+gender and its connection to work. like her role as the femme fatale means she views being a woman as part of her job obligation/title; she views steve's gender situation as similar. she thinks steve is for real actually a man on the job and for real actually a woman off it and this makes so much sense to her.
tony thinks steve & bucky are gay men and refuses to delve into this because he is very worried steve fucked howard and he does not want the details. he makes a lot of mildly homophobic quips that he views as a status of him being progressively accepting (think the "no son of mine wears a skirt........that doesn't match his top!" jokes people made in the 2010s) which steve either totally misses or just views as sexist jokes that she ignores.
thor thinks steve & bucky are lesbians and is very happy for them. he's way more used to the muscular body-builder look on woman so he can easily tell that steve's a gal, but during his early days on earth when he had long hair a lot of people informed him that 'long hair is a girl thing' (it was 2009 after all). so thor assumes any human he sees with long hair is a woman, ergo bucky must be a woman. what a beautiful lesbian partnership. he hopes he gets an invite to the wedding
5) bruce thinks steve is a trans man because all of his deep delving into the serum means he understands that it essentially functioned as ultra-transitioning but he doesn't really get how fucking crazy steve was about Having to Fight in the War and thus he assumes this was gender affirming care for steve as much as it was anything else. hes misgendering steve so hard but he thinks hes being really supportive in doing so, and steve is both very used to scientists specifically disregarding her perspective and also coworkers in general getting it wrong, so she just. ignores it. in 10 years when bruce figures it out hes going to feel like the worst person alive. Bruce also assumes steve is bi because he buys into the peggy carter cover backstory for Captain America & is aware that steve is currently married to bucky.
6) clint has no idea what gender steve is and is too afraid to ask at this point. but hes pretty sure they (?) are asexual because they (?) haven't seemed to be attracted to anyone in all the time they've worked together, even when natasha does her classic "lets make out for a cover identity' thing and- oh they(?) have a husband(?). a partner of indeterminate gender also? clint gives up. thats captain america. he's just going to use the captain title in every sentence instead of pronouns.
