BBC Merlin is insane as a show. Its an adaptation of Arthurian mythos. It's inspired by CW's Smallville (this is 100% real look it up). it stars 4 unknown 20 somethings and British acting legends. It's aimed at kids and families. its a tragedy. Its campy as hell. It will make you cry. It asks you, like Merlin, to believe in the Golden age of Camelot. It never shows you that Golden age. Everyone in the show is the most beautiful person you'll ever see. people will clown on the CGI. Its one of the most homerotic shows of the 2000's. Its an on purpose allegory for queerphobia, but those allegorious queer characters are largely villains. If you watched it when you were 12 you will never quite be able to let it go. This is a curse. This is an experience you wouldn't give up for the world.

This is why paid parental leave for all parents regardless of gender is so crucial. All parents need and deserve time to bond with their children. When only one parent is given parental leave, that parent is naturally going to have more time to develop a bond to that child than the parent who immediately goes back to work. This will, inevitably, create a lifelong imbalance in who does most, or all, of the childcare. Equal paid parental leave regardless of gender benefits all parents and all children.

wtf are you talking about, they didn't "deplete" the nature of their country, they cultivated their wilderness over centuries into some of the most idyllic pastoral landscapes in the entire world. And they did such a good job of it that the phrase "English countryside" is now synonymous with beauty and serenity and peacefulness. They didn't destroy their country's nature, they became its caretaker, they're right to be proud of it. All you're doing is pretending that the only kind of nature that should count is whatever is completely untouched by human hands.

The UK is literally ranked in the bottom 10% of most nature-depleted countries in the world. The 2023 State of Nature report shows just how dire the situation is. A third of UK bird species have declined since the 1990s, 97% of the UK's wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s, raw sewage is constantly being pumped into our rivers and seas with agricultural slurry also causing massive damage to rivers, three quarters of Britain's hedgehogs have been lost in the past 20 years and UK butterfly numbers are at their lowest ever, a sign of impending ecosystem collapse. Plus people in Britain are the most disconnected from nature in Europe.

Not to mention over populated deer destroying what little is left due to a lack of predators, 60 million non-native birds released for sport shooting every year, plus huge amounts of wildlife crime, including large numbers of birds of prey being shot/poisoned.

There is nothing beautiful about a sterile, ecologically damaged landscape that contains nothing but sheep and deer. Don't comment on something you clearly know nothing about. I live in England. I can see first hand just how dire the situation is.

Yup - the depletion of the UK's biodiversity is a real problem! And not just for plants and animals. Those forests and swamps and moorlands that the Sam Bidwell tweets are so dismissive of? Turns out, they aren't just important habitats for wildlife - wild ecosystems like that are crucial for everything from cleaning the air/water/soil, to anchoring soil to stop it eroding away, to absorbing floodwater and acting as storm breaks, to soaking up carbon from the atmosphere.

I also bristle at the tone of the tweets - that sort of, "Ooooh, yes, 'taming' our wilderness was something everyone in England came together to accomplish," when the story of biodiversity loss in the UK contains, um. Kind of a lot. Of exploitation of most people by small, powerful groups of people. Whether it's aristocrats fencing off their own private hunting reserves and stuffing them with whatever prey they wanted (including non-native species as mentioned above), or corporations spewing out pollution with too few controls.

On the bright side, there is awesome work being done on rewilding in Britain. So. Y'know. Quite a few experts also see the problem! And there have been some cool successes! Red kites were reintroduced in the 90s and are flourishing today - the UK now has 7% of the red kites in the world. Hazel dormice are being reintroduced to British woodlands to try and make sure they don't go extinct. Beavers DID go extinct in the UK, and almost across Europe - now they've been brought back and are being protected. Wild oyster reefs are being built, which is not only good for wild oysters, but for the ocean overall: they help strip pollutants out of the water and oyster beds provide a safe place for fish to spawn. Is it still an urgent situation? Definitely, but there's also a lot to hope for.
