I just kept thinking about the first flashback Ryland have of his crewmates-especially Yao's, because Yao is the first person he remembered. (I know his students can count as firsts but like as a person or individual, I think it was Yao)
It was his first flashback of other people he remembered. And upon seeing photos of Yao and Ilyukhina, he remembered being associated with them and how they looked like.
But what's interesting was when he remembered Yao first, there is also STRATT in that memory and him smiling as he stands beside her. This was even before he remembered who she was.
He had pictures of Yao and Ilyukhina so he remembered how they looked like yet he had NO pictures of Stratt. Yet in that first flash, he remembered what Stratt looked like vividly. (He remembered Carl's name but not his face until he had a flashback of their first meeting). He remembered her even without the memory of their first meeting. She was just there with him randomly in his first memory of someone else.
And what made that more interesting was that in the next sequence, after that flashback, he was seen dancing with a mop with RED HAIR, the same color as Stratt's hair. I mean that could've been the only mop available there, sure, yet how odd right?
Ryan said the directors were the one who made it for him so he won't be lonely filming those alone scenes of Grace in space (She's named, yes it's a SHE, Moppy Ringwald haha). It was a conscious decision of the directors to chose that mop when they could've settle with a plain normal common mop with white hair.
I love how this TikTok commentor pointed this out about the mop thing.
And Ryland could have been just chilling with the mop and all yet he DANCED with it and held it close to him, hugged it, a mop that has Eva Stratt's hair. If that doesn't convey how his subconscious remembers how he feels about Stratt, I don't know what that's suppose to mean.
re-reading the explosion and the aftermath for personal reasons and oh my god i'm going insane. eva stratt i'm in your head i'm in your walls.
there's an explosion nine days before the launch and he's the first thing she's worried about.
you know she immediately is freaking out over how she let this happen. it's her fault. they shouldn't have been there and she didn't spot it.
and who can she rely on to find the answer she needs?
but immediately once she knows the stakes she cuts him off.
doesn't speak to him for four whole days. the person she has involved for everything. and then when she does!!!!
she says the first of very many mean things to him. and I know she doesn't mean it because it's one of the first things she says about him to the others!! all the way back in chapter 5 before they even knew he had the coma gene!!
The redeeming quality in season 5 (for me personally) is full blown gay af daddy Gabrielle. Not only is it incredibly hot but it was such an interesting direction to go in story development to have Xena and Gabrielle having their roles reversed. Xena as the valnurable one in Ides of March, Chakram and than being pregnant and Gabrielle as her protector.
The fact that anti-abortion laws and anti-transgender laws are both being implemented en masse, at the *same* time, by the *same* people (who, it hardly needs to be remarked, are overwhelmingly neither women nor transgender) should be enough to convince any reasonable person that the narrative of conflict between and women's and transgender is, first and foremost, a divide-and-conquer strategy by the far right.

Also, hey, let's walk with this totally bad faith argument for a second. What IS different about a teen girl choosing to get an abortion, and a teen girl choosing to get a tubal ligation and a mastectomy? Are you saying that teenage girls who know that they will never want children should be forced to preserve their fertility anyway? Are you saying that teenage girls with severe back pain or the BRCA gene need to preserve their feminine breasts and be aesthetically pleasing to others, even at the expense of their own health? I mean, they're just too young to be making medical decisions which might make them less fertile or sexual desirable, right? What if they regret it???
And hey, you know, the same worry that teen girls might regret these things is true for adult women, too. Maybe we should make them wait until they're married, in case their future husband disapproves. Maybe we should make them wait until they've had kids - what if she regrets it and wants children? what if she regrets it and wants to breast feed? what if her stupid little woman brain hasn't thought this through and correctly pinned her entire self-worth and value as a person on her ability to act as a sex object and baby incubator? what then???
Trans men aren't women, and infantilizing them as poor helpless girls is obviously transphobic. But in addition to that, even if we were to buy into the central transphobic premise here, the conclusions would still be sexist as hell. Let's say that there are no trans men. Let's pretend for the sake of argument that trans men simply don't exist. Infantilizing teen girls out of being able to make their own medical decisions isn't feminist either.
If you're categorically against teen girls being able to choose to get a tubal ligation and a mastectomy, I have an awful lot of trouble believing that you're actually pro-choice. Pro-choice doesn't mean "women should have bodily autonomy just as long as they do the things I want". Pro-choice means pro-fucking-choice. You can't sing female empowerment and bodily autonomy out of one side of your mouth, while sticking your tongue out to lick the boot of the patriarchy on the other.
Let’s also note here that by “teen girl” they mean “eighteen or nineteen years old”. Or in other words: legally adult, and therefore (supposedly) allowed to make their own choices about their own bodies.
Trans people are people and deserve human rights. But also this is the same fight! I am a cis woman who never intends to use my uterus. They want to define everyone by their body parts. I am not a breeding mare and I want other people to have the same choice about their bodies (and who they are) that I should have!
The thing about Kara is there is no other (main) character that lost what she did. She lost her parents, sure, but it was so much more than just her parents. She lost the planet she was born on, sure, but it wasn't just the planet she was born on. She lost a home, but it wasn't just her home. She lost everything, every single part of her past.
The boots you're wearing are getting worn down and you think about the pair you used to have that you liked better but they got left in the back of your closet because they needed to be repaired and you never got around to it. Theyre gone and so are the people who made them and all the knowledge of how to. Your grandmother made a hat for you when you were a child and you kept it after it got too small but that's gone too and so is the technique for making it and so is that specific smell that always brings back memories of your grandmother. You look in the mirror and you think maybe you can see your parents faces from when you were a child but you have no pictures of them and youre slowly starting to forget what they looked like, you're even forgetting what you used to look like. Your childhood diary is gone, no matter how much you wish you could look at it again because the details of your old life are blurring together and fading away. You had a falling out with a friend and then lost touch with them when you changed schools and you'd always wanted to reconnect with them but now they're dead and so is their family and the entirety of the school you shared. That neighbor who made those candies you'd loved and never answered you when you asked how she made them because the recipe was a family secret. The teacher from middle school that you despised but who your father insisted was probably a good person just going through a hard time is gone and you'll never know if your father was right. Those distant cousins you saw at big family gatherings but never got to know. The song that annoyed you because it was popular and it was played too much will never be played again. Your favourite book. The ingredients for the recipe your father used to make a lot because it was simple and easy. The wedding outfit your mother kept to give to you if you ever got married. The slang you used with others from your age group that was never recorded in any dictionary. The really obscure old legend that your best friend's dad loved to tell pieces of to you and your friend. The method your aunt used for that hairstyle she liked. The casual rivalries between people in different regions of your hometown. The sports you grew up playing.
Every single piece of the world you knew is gone, it all exists only inside your own mind now.
Just the way she touches him, man. The way she's always looking to him for guidance. How she moves closer to him when she feels unsure. How she keeps trying to meet him where he is.
People who crave touch as a form of communication don't do that unless they feel safe. And to that end, even rough touch is communication. You can talk about abuse all you want, but people who are hard wired for non-verbal, tactile input receive it differently.
But seeking it? That's a sign of comfort. Because soft touch can lie, but roughness-- Never. I don't know how to explain that to people who have never been physically abused. Because there IS a difference. And we know it implicitly.
I can't help but feel like people who don't trust Lucy's judgement with Cooper are doing so from a place of superiority. She's sheltered, yes, but not stupid. She's a grown woman who has shown more than once that she's more than capable of fighting back. And when she draws her boundaries with Cooper, he respects them. He pushes the hell out of them, but he does respect them once they're drawn.
But, he also doesn't let her exert her ideology over others and I think that's where a lot of people get hung up. It's hard when you agree with someone to want to see the flaws in their logic. The Golden Rule? Great words to live by.
Except...
People don't always want to be treated the way you want to be treated. They want to be treated the way they want to be treated. And that's not a one-size-fits-all thing. We train people how to treat us with our reactions. And if they don't respect that, we always have the choice to leave.
Duality is a hell of a concept. He betrayed her, but he didn't lie to her. He is her friend. He's her friend and he betrayed her. And then he came back for her. We're witnessing the growth in real time and still people are saying, "I don't know, man... I think maybe he's just a bad person." And they're right-- Cooper is very bad at being a person. He's had so little practice since becoming a ghoul that he sucks at it. But that's not the same as intent and Lucy herself is the one who holds him accountable for it.
Idk, man. That seems like a healthy relationship to me. Someone who will give you the space and grace to express your shadow and then say, "Okay, great. Now if you're done being a cunt, would you like to join the rest of us again?" Because if you're only showing up as the 'good' you in your relationships, then you're only showing up as half of you. But that's an advanced conversation.
