dogs are omnivore and IF YOUR VET APPROVES your pooch MAY be able to go on an APPROVED(!!!!!) commercial vegan dog food like the brand “v-dog” which has all the essential vitamins, protein, etc. (the oldest record winning dogs have been vegan)

cats are CARNIVORE and cannot fucking live on a vegan diet. a vet would laugh in your face and probably find some way to have your pet taken away from you because you’re obviously not fit to have an animal if you think you can feed a cat a diet based on your own ethics

i’m vegan but this is so fucking harmful.

This posts, and many of the notes on it, are bothering me. Ladies, gentlemen, esteemed colleagues from outside the confines of the gender binary; gather ‘round. Let’s throw some science in this joint.

1. Humans. Humans are not cats. Humans are not dogs. One would think this obvious, but people have a tendency to attempt such interspecies comparisons when discussing diet. Humans are order omnivora; we have essentially evolved in a manner that attempts to give us as much dietary flexibility as possible. We do, however, require a substance called B12 (or cobalamin), which is extremely important for brain and nervous system functions, as well as the synthesis of DNA and the construction of red blood cells. We cannot produce this vitamin ourselves–no animal, plant, or fungus can. The enzymes used in cobalamin production are essentially unique to bacteria and archaea–some species of which hang out in the digestive tracks of other animals. We get cobalamin in a roundabout way from fish, shellfish, meat, eggs, milk, and dairy products. While there is no naturally-occurring, vegan source of the vitamin that has been demonstrated effective in a human study of statistically significant sample size, effective synthetic forms do exist and can be used as a substitute. Cyanocobalamin is one of the most common and is frequently found in fortified foods and vitamins. In short: Humans are omnivores. Humans have evolved for dietary flexibility, including viable vegetarianism. Humans did not evolve for veganism (be extremely suspicious of people who tell you that we did, as they are lying), but due to modern technologies, veganism is also a viable diet that humans can thrive on, should they so choose.

2. Cats. Cats are order carnivora. Cats require (amongst other things) an amino acid called taurine. We’re not quite sure how, exactly, but we know that it’s extremely important to feline heart wall tissue, retinal tissue, and brain tissue amongst other things. Cats cannot manufacture their own taurine, and must get it from other sources–primarily shellfish, fish and meat. Taurine breaks down when heated, so feeding your cat a home-cooked diet rich in this foods is also not necessarily a good idea (talk to a vet). Secondary (read: SUPPLEMENTARY. NOT A SOLE SOURCE OF TAURINE.) sources of taurine for cats include dairy, eggs, and seaweed- or yeast-based taurine supplements. In nature, cats don’t really need to worry about getting enough taurine, because (as you may have noticed), taurine sources are indeed the things that cats tend to catch and eat. However, a cat that lives in a human household is dependent on humans for food, and sometimes humans are utter fucktrucks. In short: Cats are obligate carnivores. Their primary source of nutrition is meat. They must eat meat, preferably as close to raw as possible. They have digestive tracks designed for digesting meat. There are vegan/vegetarian cat kibbles on the market. Do not buy them. Your cat is neither vegan nor vegetarian, and if you adjust their diet as if they were, you are a terrible person who is harming and possibly killing your pet. You suck. End of discussion.

3. Dogs. Dogs are slightly more nuanced here. They are facultative carnivores–meaning that they optimally should eat meat, but can survive on other things if resources are scare. Dogs also need the amino acid taurine, but can technically manufacture it themselves if the proper building blocks are in their diets. They also need vitamin D–D3 is preferable, but D2 can be used to some degree. Dogs are somewhere between us (the true omnivore) and the cat (the true carnivore). A vegan or vegetarian diet will keep a dog alive, certainly, but is unlikely to allow your pet to thrive as it lacks the recommended nutrients. You should probably be feeding your dog meat. The exception here–some dogs are allergic to conventional dog foods, or find symptoms of certain diseases alleviated by vegetarianism. In this case, a veterinarian (not you, layperson, I mean an actual trained veterinarian) may determine that the benefits of putting your dog on a vegetarian/vegan diet outweigh those of feeding your dog meat. This is relatively rare, but does occasionally happen. And no, actually, the oldest dog is not vegan–Bramble is the only dog on this list that I found had some indication of veganism. The oldest dog on record is an Australian Kelpie named Maggie, who was not vegan. It is more likely that Bramble lived that long despite the veganism, not because of it. In short: If a vet thinks that your dog may be allergic to dog food/require a special diet and recommends you try feeding it a vegetarian/vegan diet, listen to your vet. Otherwise? Dogs are carnivora. They do need vegetables and other sources of nutrients, but their optimal fuel, as it were, is meat. Your dog needs meat to be happy. Fucking feed your dog.

Now, I did manage to find two veterinarians who disagree with every other study I dug up and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Their articles are here and here. They don’t really have sources, and are essentially wholly dependent on anecdotal evidence (“my dog is a vegetarian and hasn’t died!”), but for those of you data cherry-pickers reading this, there you go.

As a rule, dogs and cats need meat. If that makes you uncomfortable, that is your problem, not theirs. If you try to implement a vegan or vegetarian diet for your pets because you implemented one for yourself, you shouldn’t have those pets. That is animal abuse. (By the way, those of you not feeding your cats and non-allergic dogs the food they need to survive and thrive? What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you not love your pets?)

TL;DR If you do not want a pet that must be fed meat, you should under no circumstances acquire a cat or a dog. Thank you for your time.

I am from Hong Kong. As you may not know, this is a special administration region of China. We (still) have our own legal system, and freedom of speech, that’s why I can access to everywhere in the internet without censorship (I get ask a lot). Recently, over a million of people are protesting against the Extradition Law. It was an extremely-almost-impossible fight and many students are injured horribly by the police force. I WAS THERE.

If the extradition law is passed, which means that China can “took” anyone from Hong Kong back to China as “prisoners”. Oh you don’t wanna know what China will do to those innocent people …

The government is forcing the law on us. We couldn’t do this on our own. We need more attention from other countries. Please spread this message out.

Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Law Protest

It breaks my heart to see this happen to my city, but it’s a story that we must tell, before it’s too late

What is happening and why does it matter?

Some of you have not have even heard of this dot-on-the-map city, but it’s home to 7 million people, including myself, and we’re faced with yet again, another violation of democracy from our very own government.

Hong Kong is known as a special administrative region, ruled by Britain from 1841 to 1997, until it was ‘returned’ to China. At the time, Hong Kong had already established its own systems, including our own laws, economy and way of life. The Chinese government had promised us 50 years of autonomy to maintain our own judicial, executive and legislative systems, under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ regime. But now, just over 20 years after this so-called promise, the government is backing up on their words by amending the Extradition Law.

By amending this Law, it permits the Chinese government to request the extradition of any Hong Kong citizens to China to face charges. This is the just the beginning of the violation of our rights to protest and our rights to democracy because anything seen as ‘a threat to national security’ can be deemed a crime, and we’ve already seen democratic political figures face charges from the Chinese government, only never to be seen again. If you’ve read 1984 by George Orwell, this is the live action movie.

This past Sunday, over ONE MILLION people wearing white marched the streets of Hong Kong to peacefully protest against the Extradition Law, holding out red signs and yellow umbrellas, a nod to the Umbrella Revolution in 2014, another example of how our government had failed us and taken away our rights to choose our own Chief Executive (the highest ranking official of Hong Kong)

This protest is one of the largest Hong Kong has ever seen, but despite the negative reactions from its citizens, the government refused to back down, showing yet again, just how much they disregard our opinions. They were adamant to follow through on their words to amend the law on June 12, 2019, and had even influenced our biggest television network, TVB, to only display the protestors in a negative light.

This leads us to today. It’s now or never. After the extradition law, any acts of protest or anger towards the government can be seen as a crime against the country. If this law passes, Hong Kong is as good as dead.

The protest began early this morning with crowds of people boycotting work and school to surround the Hong Kong government buildings to prevent government officials from entering to discuss and pass this law.

It was a stand-off between police and unarmed citizens, and by the afternoon, it had escalated to a whole new level. Policemen have started using batons, pepper spray, tear gas bombs and water canons against protesters and even fired shots. Reports are saying that a citizen had been shot in the head in broad daylight.

The fight for democracy is still ongoing, we still have thousands of people out on the streets right now, risking their lives to fight for their home.

As I’m writing this, I can’t stop my tears. How did we get to this? What will it take for us to have our democracy back? How far do we have to go for our voices to be heard? How many more people have to get hurt or killed before the government realises we will not become pawns of the Chinese government. We are Hong Kongers and we will not relent.

This act is not against the people of China, I assure you. it is against the government that has SUPPRESSED us for years and will continue to do so until change is made.

My final message here is to all of you on Tumblr. I’ve seen you work miracles and I’m hoping you can do the same now. Share this with your followers, get this out there, we need international support now more than ever. If other countries can pressure the Chinese government and ours to stop the extradition law, we may have hope yet.

We’re counting on you. Please don’t let my brothers and sisters who are out there unarmed, facing police brutality, go to waste. We just want our home back.

We alone in Hong Kong do not have enough power to pressure the government to listen to people’s real voice. They are ignoring us, and worse, they are shooting the protestors with rubber bullets and bean bag bullets! (Those are not “real bullets”, but are potentially fatal too.)

We are aware that comparing with protests occur in other parts of the world, we don’t have as much violence and injuries. We are also aware that, we do not want to hurt each other and even sacrifice lives to protect our freedom and rights!!

That is why we ask for help. We hope that you can support Hong Kong people with protests, and call for attention from your society and country to pressure Hong Kong government. At the very least, please share this message and other news and information about our protest!

She went to school and didn’t come back home afterwards and her family is extremely worried. She was reported as missing right away and the police are trying to find her, but so far not much is known.

Hey all!

Elle is actually one of my ride or dies. We became friends about 8 or 9 years ago on this here blue website, and I love her so fucking much.

Their story is sweet, but unfortunately, they’re going through some hard times. Elle’s endometriosis is super bad, and she’s neck deep in medical bills, on top of being unable to work due to the disease. This is making it really hard for them to keep up with other bills, as she can’t supplement their household income.

She’s had a GoFundMe up for a long time now, but it still has a long way to go. They really do need the help so they can live their cute ass lives!!
